Keep your custom checkbox fallback if your supported browsers include Firefox or Safari. The CSS Working Group’s current draft places checkboxes within ::checkmark’s intended scope, but a compatibility table available on October 7, 2026, still showed support gaps. A draft describes the intended feature; it does not guarantee that the browsers your users run implement it.
What `::checkmark` is meant to style
The CSS Working Group’s CSS Form Control Styling draft describes ::checkmark as the checked-state indicator for checkboxes, radio buttons, and option elements. It is intended to let authors style that indicator without constructing the mark entirely from other CSS-drawn elements.

Under the draft, the pseudo-element is generated only when the originating element supports :checked and either the element or an ancestor has basic appearance. The draft describes it as fully styleable and says it inherits from the originating element. For checkboxes and radio buttons, it generates a box as though it were a child between boxes generated by ::before and ::after. For options, it appears before boxes generated by ::before.

The W3C CSS Form Control Styling Level 1 document contains the same central definition. These documents explain the standards direction, not which browser versions have shipped a working implementation.

Why the draft is not a reason to remove your fallback
A compatibility table on a third-party mirror of MDN, checked for this article on October 7, 2026, listed full support from Chrome 133, Edge 133, and Opera 118, and no support from Firefox or Safari. It also marked the feature experimental and not Baseline. Those version thresholds are provisional: the page is a mirror, its compatibility data may lag, and the browser versions it lists should be checked against current canonical data before being used to set a support policy. There is also a documentation mismatch. The CSSWG draft names checkboxes, radios, and options, while MDN’s pseudo-elements reference describes ::checkmark in connection with the selected option in a customizable select. The select-focused reference does not establish checkbox support; the draft describes the broader proposed scope. Treat the draft as the intended model and verify actual behavior in the browsers you support.

Do not confuse ::checkmark with :checked. The latter is an established pseudo-class for selecting checked form controls; its broad availability does not establish support for the separate pseudo-element. MDN documents :checked independently.

The practical choice is not whether to preserve native checkbox behavior: keep the real checkbox input either way. The choice is how to render its checked indicator in each supported browser.

The sources do not provide a measured maintenance-cost comparison between these approaches. Decide based on tested coverage and whether the native indicator can meet the design, rather than assuming the new pseudo-element will remove all custom styling work.
Preserve checkbox semantics while styling it
Use an actual <input type="checkbox"> and associate it with a <label>. That preserves native checked state and label interaction while you change the appearance. MDN’s checkbox reference describes this native control and its label behavior.

If you alter appearance or draw a custom visual box, test the states and environments that can make a control hard to perceive:
- Unchecked, checked, and indeterminate states.
- Keyboard focus, including whether the focus indicator remains clear.
- Forced-colors and high-contrast modes.
- The actual browsers and versions in your support policy.
These are implementation checks, not a claim that one custom-checkbox recipe is guaranteed to work everywhere.

When to remove the hand-built mark
Revisit the fallback only after current compatibility information and your own target-browser tests show that ::checkmark works for the users you support. Test the resulting checked, unchecked, focus, and indeterminate appearances, as well as forced-colors behavior. Then confirm the native checkbox and label interaction remain intact. If any target browser fails those checks, retain a fallback for it.
The point to watch is reliable coverage in your own support matrix, not a particular milestone in the draft or a version threshold copied from a potentially stale compatibility table. The draft permits styling the checkmark and specifying its content, but does not promise that every desired rendering detail will be interchangeable with your existing implementation.
