Games compete by changing how they evolve after launch, which platforms players can use, how much risk studios take on, and how players access and pay for them. These are ways to respond to competition—not formulas that guarantee a game will succeed.
Why games keep changing after launch
A release is not always the end of development. Some studios continue supporting a game with updates and new content, aiming to keep it active for players over time. That approach also requires ongoing work: a continuing service depends on a studio’s ability to maintain and evolve it after launch.

Unity’s 2025 report found that 42% of surveyed developers expected more games to adopt continuous updates as a competitive strategy. This is a survey finding, not a forecast that applies to the whole industry. McKinsey describes live operations as a major revenue driver across PC and mobile, while noting that higher production quality and crowded release schedules raise expectations for how live-service games evolve. Neither source establishes that frequent updates make a particular game profitable.

Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together, reducing the extent to which a player’s device determines whom they can join. Unity’s 2026 report says 72% of studios prioritize cross-play. That figure describes what studios reported in Unity’s survey; it does not prove that cross-play increases sales or that every game can support it.

Why some studios choose smaller projects
Not every competitive response involves building a larger game. Unity’s 2026 report says 52% of developers prioritize smaller-scale projects as their primary means of reducing risk. A smaller project can limit the scope of a studio’s commitment, but that survey finding does not mean smaller games are inherently safer or that every studio should scale down.
How business models change access and payment
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), in its 2022 report on mobile ecosystems, describes several models in cloud and mobile gaming. They differ in how players access games and how services collect revenue:

| Model | How it works | Revenue approach described by the CMA |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription-only | Access is offered through a subscription service. | Subscription payments. |
| À la carte | Players access games individually rather than through an all-subscription model. | Payment for games individually. |
| Free-to-play | Players can access the game without an upfront purchase. | In-app purchases, advertising, or both. |
These options change when and how money is collected; the model alone does not establish whether a game is good value for players or a sound business for its publisher.
What cloud gaming changes
Cloud gaming runs a game on remote infrastructure and streams the play to a device. That can change where a game runs and how a player reaches it, rather than requiring the game to run as a native app on that device. The CMA’s 2022 report is UK-focused and does not establish current global adoption or market share.

In a submission quoted in the CMA report, Google argued that cloud streaming can facilitate cross-platform play, provide a consistent experience, and spare players from downloading and updating native apps. Those are a provider’s stated benefits, not findings that every player will experience them. Streaming’s practical value therefore depends on whether it works well for a given player and game; the cited report does not establish that cloud delivery is universally preferable.

Together, these strategies address different pressures: continuing updates focus on a game’s life after launch; cross-play broadens who can play together; smaller projects address development risk; and business models and cloud delivery change access and payment. A studio might use more than one, but the available evidence does not rank them or show that any one approach guarantees competitive success.
