There are two different ways to put iPhone contacts in Google Contacts, the address book associated with a Google Account (often called “Gmail”): turn on ongoing Google sync, or export contacts already stored in iCloud and import a copy. Adding a Google account to your iPhone does not move iCloud-only contacts into Google. Choose sync to keep Google-account contacts current across signed-in devices; use a vCard export and import to copy existing iCloud contacts.
Choose between syncing and copying

These workflows have different effects: sync connects records in Google to the iPhone, while export and import creates a copy in Google. Google’s sync instructions do not say that enabling sync transfers iCloud-only contacts.

Keep Google contacts syncing with your iPhone
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Contacts. Depending on the iOS version or account setup, account controls may instead appear under Accounts or Contacts Accounts.
- Tap Add Account > Google. If the intended account is already connected, open its account entry instead.
- Sign in to the Google Account whose contacts you want to use.
- Turn on Contacts in the account’s sync options and tap Save.
- Open the iPhone’s Contacts app to start the sync flow. Check Google Contacts on the web while signed in to the same account to confirm which records are there.
Google Account Help explains that “When you update a contact, it syncs with your iPhone and anywhere you’re signed in to your Google Account.” Google’s iPhone sync instructions cover the current setup route.
Copy iCloud contacts into Google Contacts
Use this process when the contacts you want to copy are in iCloud. It creates a Google copy; it is not the same as turning on Google sync.

- On a tablet or computer, go to icloud.com/contacts and sign in to the Apple Account that holds the contacts.
- Select one contact, several contacts, or all contacts. Apple documents selecting all from the Actions menu; several selected contacts can be exported together as one vCard.
- Choose Share > Export vCard and save the resulting file. Apple notes that exporting all contacts as one vCard can serve as a backup.
- Open Google Contacts in a browser and sign in to the Google Account that should receive the contacts.
- Choose Import > Select file, select the saved
.vcffile, then choose Import. Google Contacts accepts vCard and CSV files. - Confirm that the imported records appear in the intended Google Account. On the iPhone, make sure Contacts sync is enabled for that same Google Account if you want those records available in the Contacts app.
The export/import instructions describe copying contacts, not removing them from iCloud. Keep iCloud enabled until you have checked the Google copy. If you want a refreshed Google copy after the iCloud contacts change, repeat the export and import; Google sync maintains Google-account records, not the original iCloud-only records. Export from another source or directly from iPhone
Export a list from the iPhone Contacts app
Apple’s iPhone guide supports exporting some or all contacts directly from a list. Touch and hold the list, tap Export, choose the fields, then save or share the exported contact cards. The handoff depends on where iOS saves or shares the file. If you end up with a .vcf file, import it in Google Contacts on the web using the steps above. See Apple’s iPhone export guide.

Distinguish importing to iPhone from importing to Google
Tapping a .vcf attachment in an email or message imports contacts to the iPhone; it does not, by itself, import them into Google Contacts. For Google as the destination, use Google Contacts’ web import. Apple describes the iPhone process in its vCard import guide.

On iPhone, the iCloud Contacts control is Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Contacts. Apple says iCloud contacts stay current across devices signed in to that Apple Account. This is separate from Google Contacts sync; see Apple’s guide to syncing contacts across devices.

Check the import and troubleshoot problems
Google contacts do not appear on the iPhone
- In Settings > Apps > Contacts, open the account controls (Accounts or Contacts Accounts may be shown) and check that the intended Google Account has Contacts enabled.
- Open the iPhone Contacts app to start the sync flow, then check Google Contacts on the web under the same account.
Sync still does not work
Google’s iPhone troubleshooting instructions say to check the account’s Advanced settings, turn on Use SSL, and save. If needed, Google also advises trying to add the account again. Follow Google’s iPhone and iPad sync troubleshooting steps.
Imported details seem to be missing
Open the contact and check its Notes section. Google says some details from an import may appear there.

The import is too large
Google recommends splitting an import of more than 3,000 contacts into multiple CSV files. Google Contacts lists an account limit of 25,000 contacts. These are Google product limits described in Google’s contact import help.

Only some contacts arrived
- Check whether you exported one contact, selected contacts, or all contacts from the intended iCloud list.
- Confirm that the file was imported while signed in to the Google Account where you want the records.
