How to Prevent a PHP Telegram Bot from Skipping Updates

A reliable local PHP bot polls Telegram with getUpdates, processes each update before confirming it through the next offset, and tolerates retries.

Run a PHP process that repeatedly calls Telegram’s getUpdates method, handles each update, and only then advances its offset. Long polling works without a public webhook endpoint, but Telegram will not deliver updates through getUpdates while an outgoing webhook is active. The key reliability rule is to confirm an update only after your application has safely handled it.

How the local polling loop works

Your PHP process initiates requests to Telegram and waits for updates. Telegram returns unconfirmed updates in batches; your process handles them, then requests again with an offset that confirms completed work. Unlike a webhook, polling does not require Telegram to reach a public endpoint on your machine.

  1. Check that the bot has no active webhook. If one is configured, remove it before using getUpdates.
  2. Request updates with the current offset and a nonzero long-poll timeout.
  3. Check both the HTTP response and Telegram’s API-level success status, then decode the JSON response.
  4. Process each returned update. Advance the offset to that update’s update_id plus one only after handling it safely.
  5. Repeat the request so the process drains any remaining updates and continues waiting for new ones.

Telegram’s Bots FAQ says, “The getUpdates method returns the earliest 100 unconfirmed updates.” A backlog may therefore require multiple requests; do not assume one response contains everything waiting.

Why offset timing determines whether work can be skipped

Telegram treats updates at or below the offset in a later getUpdates request as confirmed. The next offset should be the last processed update_id plus one, as described in the Bots FAQ. If your process advances the offset before completing the work, a crash can leave Telegram considering an unhandled update confirmed.

For a sequential loop, keep the next offset in memory while processing and persist it only after the associated work is safely complete. If the process stops before that point, it can request the update again. This means handlers should tolerate duplicate delivery: for example, use an application-level record or idempotency check before repeating a payment, notification, or other consequential side effect. The right persistence design depends on what the bot does.

Telegram says update IDs can help ignore repeated updates or recover their order. It also states in the Bot API documentation: “Incoming updates are stored on the server until the bot receives them either way, but they will not be kept longer than 24 hours.” Treat this as a finite recovery window, not durable storage for your application’s own business data.

PHP request and error-handling choices

The API request URL has the form https://api.telegram.org/bot<TOKEN>/<METHOD>; the actual token belongs in the URL, so never put it in source control or logs. Load it from a local environment or configuration mechanism excluded from version control. Telegram’s FAQ shows the token-bearing request form.

Use an HTTP client timeout that is longer than the long-poll wait plus reasonable network overhead. A connection timeout and a total request timeout serve different purposes: the first limits establishing the connection, while the second must allow the long poll to complete. Telegram’s Hello Bot PHP sample uses cURL and sets CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT to 5; that sample value is a connection-timeout example, not a universal long-poll or total-request setting.

  • Handle transport failures separately from HTTP status failures and Telegram responses where ok is false.
  • Report JSON decoding failures and malformed or unexpected response data without logging the bot token.
  • After a failed request, pause for a bounded interval before retrying instead of entering a rapid retry loop. Choose the delay and any backoff policy for your environment.
  • Keep the process running under an appropriate local process manager if it must restart after a crash. Telegram’s API documentation does not prescribe one universal supervisor, retry policy, or timeout configuration.

Telegram’s FAQ points to PHP examples, including a Simple Poll bot that supports long polling and webhooks. These examples are useful references for API syntax and structure; they are not a complete deployment or process-supervision policy.

Check for an active webhook before debugging an idle poller

Telegram’s Bots FAQ and webhook guide describe polling and webhooks as mutually exclusive delivery modes: an outgoing webhook prevents long polling with getUpdates until the webhook is removed. If a local process appears to be waiting indefinitely or receives no updates, check webhook state before changing the PHP loop.

When polling fits better than a webhook

Consideration Long polling with getUpdates Webhook
Connection direction Your bot process pulls updates from Telegram. Telegram pushes updates to your endpoint.
Process or endpoint Requires a process that keeps polling. Requires an endpoint reachable by Telegram.
Infrastructure described by Telegram No public webhook endpoint is needed for the local process. Standard webhook deployment needs public reachability, TLS, and a supported port, as described in Telegram’s webhook guide.
Typical operational fit Convenient for local development when you do not have a public HTTPS endpoint. Worth considering for a continuously hosted deployment that can operate a reachable endpoint.

Telegram describes webhooks as avoiding the polling mechanism and potentially reducing requests; possible CPU or response-time improvements depend on usage. Neither delivery mode is universally faster or cheaper. Choose according to the infrastructure you have and the request frequency and response latency your bot actually needs.

When the Local Bot API Server matters

Telegram offers an optional Local Bot API Server, but says most bots are fine with its default servers. It is not required to build a PHP getUpdates loop; consider it only if you need capabilities specific to that server, as described in the Bot API documentation.
