To keep a Google Drive file ID intact, keep working with the same Drive file—do not delete it and upload a replacement. Google says an ID is unique and opaque, and stays stable for that file’s lifetime, including when its name changes. That guarantee applies to the Drive item, not necessarily to the local path or filename an AI-memory app uses. Without API access, manage the file through Drive for desktop or Drive on the web, and check the app’s documentation to learn what it tracks.
First, separate the Drive ID from the local file path
A Drive file ID identifies a cloud item. A local path tells software where to find a file on your computer, while a filename is its display name. These are distinct things: keeping a file at the same local path does not prove that it is still the same Drive object, and changing a path does not by itself establish that the cloud ID changed. Google’s developer documentation says IDs remain stable during the life of a file, even if its name changes: Files and folders overview.

With no API, do not assume an AI-memory connector can read or preserve Drive IDs. Its behavior depends on whether it tracks a path, a filename, or an identifier; the app’s own documentation is the authority on that point.
Six pitfalls that can break continuity
1. Assuming the local path is the Drive ID
A desktop app may find its memory file by its local path, but that path is not the opaque ID Google assigns to the Drive item. Check how the AI-memory app locates files, and verify the item in Drive rather than inferring identity from where a file appears on your computer.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Deleting the original and uploading a replacement
Renaming an existing item keeps its ID stable. Deleting it and uploading another copy creates a different lifecycle operation; Google’s ID documentation does not promise that the replacement inherits the original ID. When continuity matters, edit or rename the existing item through Drive instead of replacing it, then confirm that the intended item remains in Drive.
3. Changing streaming or mirroring before sync completes
Drive for desktop can stream files, keeping them primarily in the cloud, or mirror them, keeping local copies as well. Streaming requires Drive for desktop to access files from the computer; mirroring uses local disk space and supports offline access. Google says My Drive can use either mode, while shared drives can only be streamed. Some apps that write extensively may work faster with mirrored files.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
When switching to mirroring, differing local and cloud content can result in both copies being kept. Before changing modes—or moving or deleting folders—check sync status. Google’s guidance is explicit: “To avoid data loss, make sure your files are fully synced before you delete or move folders.” See Stream & mirror files with Drive for desktop.

| Mirroring | Local copies are available offline. | Uses space for local copies. | Can suit apps that write extensively, which Google notes may work faster with mirrored files. |
4. Syncing the same folder with multiple clients
Pointing a second sync or backup service at the live AI-memory folder can introduce competing changes. Google Workspace warns that syncing a folder with Drive for desktop and another sync service might prevent files from syncing to Drive or cause them to be removed. Keep independent backups separate from the active sync directory unless the services’ behavior is known and supported. See Drive Sync FAQ for admins.

5. Treating a Google Docs pointer as a normal local document
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides appear on a computer as small shortcut files that open in a browser; they are not ordinary local copies of the document’s contents. Google’s admin guidance says these pointer files cannot be backed up, uploaded, or copied using third-party sync clients. If the AI memory is a native Google document, edit it in Drive or through a supported browser workflow rather than expecting a file copier to carry its content. The same Drive Sync FAQ for admins explains this limitation.
6. Ignoring conflicts, access errors, or a changed path
Permission problems, an inaccessible or deleted original, and incompatible local and cloud edits can prevent Drive from updating the original item. In some cases, a copy of edited content may remain instead. Google’s troubleshooting guidance covers these sync problems: Fix problems syncing to your computer.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

Also check whether a folder was replaced with a shortcut. That can change its absolute local path, so an external app that relies on the old path may no longer find the file. Before resolving a conflict by deleting anything, inspect Drive activity and sync notifications.

A cautious no-API workflow
- Identify what the app follows. Check its documentation to determine whether it uses a local path, filename, or another reference. Do not treat a path as proof of Drive identity.
- Choose a Drive for desktop mode deliberately. Weigh offline availability, local disk use, and compatibility with the app. Remember that streaming and mirroring do not make a local path and a Drive ID interchangeable.
- Wait for sync to finish. Confirm Drive for desktop reports the file as synced before moving, deleting, or changing folders or sync modes.
- Make changes to the existing item. Edit or rename it in Drive rather than deleting and uploading a substitute when preserving its ID matters.
- Avoid overlapping sync clients. Keep other backup workflows away from the active folder unless their interaction with Drive for desktop is supported.
- Verify after a change. Check the file in Drive and review activity or sync notifications if there is a conflict, access error, or unexpected local path.
