For a rechargeable wireless keyboard, the habit is to keep its charge roughly between 20% and 80%, rather than routinely letting it run flat or holding it at full charge. BGR recommended this approach in an August 26, 2026 article, but the available evidence does not establish that it extends the life of every keyboard or suits every battery design.
What the 20%-to-80% habit means
Check the keyboard’s battery indicator, if it has one, and recharge when the level approaches 20%. If you can monitor the level while charging, disconnect it around 80%. Treat those figures as approximate guideposts, not precise thresholds: the advice is a general recommendation from BGR, not a keyboard-specific test result.

BGR’s rationale is that avoiding very low and very high charge levels may reduce stress on lithium batteries. The article describes a cycle as discharging to 0% and then recharging to 100%. It does not identify an original technical study behind its explanation, and the evidence available here does not independently verify the charging range for keyboards or other battery chemistries.

How to apply it without over-managing charging
- If the keyboard displays a charge percentage, use it as a rough reference and top up near the lower end of the range.
- If it shows only a low-battery warning, recharge when that warning appears rather than trying to calculate a percentage the keyboard does not provide.
- If the keyboard’s manual gives different charging or storage instructions, follow those instructions; the general recommendation does not establish what is right for every model.
- Do not treat an occasional full charge or a battery running low as proof that the keyboard has been damaged. The recommendation concerns a routine, not a guarantee or a strict rule.
Will this make the keyboard last longer?
That outcome is not established for a particular keyboard. BGR presents the range as a way to reduce battery stress, but its article does not report a controlled keyboard test or demonstrate a longer service life from following the habit. Its stated estimate that consumer-electronics batteries may last 300 to 500 cycles is not tied to a named study, publisher, or year, so it should not be treated as a verified lifespan for a keyboard.

Choose a keyboard setup that fits your charging preferences
