KB5062553 Not Installing? Fix 0x800F0991, 0x800F0983 and Other Errors

KB5062553 fails with several error codes on Windows 11 24H2. Start with the built-in repair reinstall, then check update services or install the correctly matched MSU packages manually.

If KB5062553 will not install on Windows 11 24H2, start with Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Microsoft Q&A reports describe this repair reinstall as keeping your files, apps and settings. If that control is unavailable, check the update services, capture the exact error code, and then use the correct Microsoft Update Catalog packages in the documented prerequisite order.

What KB5062553 is and why installation can fail

KB5062553 is the cumulative update Microsoft released on July 8, 2025, for Windows 11 version 24H2. It brings systems to OS Build 26100.4652. A cumulative update contains multiple servicing changes, so Windows must validate the servicing stack, package prerequisites, system components and the restart phase before it can finish.

Installation reports associated with this update include 0x800705b9, 0x800F0991, 0x800F0983, 0x800706BE and 0x80073712. Those reports do not establish one universal cause. The same visible message can result from a damaged component store, an unavailable prerequisite, a service that is not running, package architecture mismatch or a failure during reboot. Treat the code and the point of failure as clues, not as proof of a single diagnosis.

Record the exact error before changing anything

  1. Open Settings, then go to Windows Update.
  2. Open Update history and expand the failed entry for KB5062553.
  3. Write down the complete hexadecimal code and whether the failure occurred while downloading, installing, or restarting.
  4. Restart the PC once, return to Windows Update, and try the update again. A retry after a normal reboot distinguishes a transient restart problem from a repeatable servicing failure.

Keep the code with your notes. For example, a machine that reaches “installing” and then rolls back needs a different investigation from one that cannot download the package at all.

0x800F0991 Reported by several users during servicing of this update; it does not identify a unique root cause. Use the Windows Update repair reinstall, then retry.
0x800F0983 Also reported during installation; the code alone cannot tell you which package or component is missing. Repair reinstall first; use the manual prerequisite route if needed.
0x800705B9 Reported in Windows Update attempts, with no single cause established. Check services and third-party interference, then retry.
0x800706BE Appears in community reports about the update but is not specific to one repair. Capture the phase of failure and follow the same decision tree.
0x80073712 Indicates a servicing failure was reported, but the report does not prove which component is affected. Use the repair reinstall or the documented manual package route.

Fix 1: use Windows’ repair reinstall

This is the clearest first fix reported for KB5062553 failures because it repairs Windows through Windows Update rather than asking you to identify individual damaged files. The accepted Microsoft Q&A answer describes it as a repair installation that keeps files, apps and settings.

  1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now, confirm the prompts, and let Windows complete the repair. Keep the PC connected to power and do not force a shutdown while it is working.
  5. After Windows returns to the desktop, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and retry KB5062553.

The control may be inactive or missing on some installations. A Microsoft Q&A thread includes a report that the same repair path worked for several people with 0x800F0991 and related errors, while another person could not select the option. Therefore, an unavailable control is a branch in the troubleshooting process, not evidence that your files must be erased.

Fix 2: check Windows Update services and interference

Community troubleshooting replies recommend checking third-party interference, running the Windows Update troubleshooter and restarting the services that move, verify and install packages. These checks are low-risk and should be completed before manual package installation.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Locate Windows Update and select Run.
  3. Apply any repair it reports, restart Windows, and try KB5062553 again.

Start or restart the required services

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. For each service below, check that it is not disabled. If it is stopped, choose Start; if it is already running, choose Restart:
    • Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
    • Cryptographic Services
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Installer
  3. Close the Services window, restart the PC, and retry the update.

One user specifically reported success after starting or restarting BITS. Other reports are mixed, so service resets are diagnostic steps rather than guaranteed cures.

Temporarily remove interference from the test

Third-party security, tuning or network-filtering software can interfere with downloading or servicing. Close nonessential utilities and, if your security product provides a documented temporary pause, use that only for the test and turn protection back on immediately afterward. Do not uninstall security software solely because an update failed; the error reports do not prove that any particular product is responsible.

Fix 3: install the Microsoft Update Catalog packages manually

Use this route when the repair reinstall is unavailable or does not resolve the failure. It requires careful package matching. Confirm the Windows edition and architecture first: open Settings > System > About and read System type. An x64 package is not interchangeable with an Arm64 package.

Download every required MSU file

  1. Open the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for KB5062553.
  2. Choose the entry matching Windows 11 version 24H2 and your architecture. Do not select a package for a different release or processor type.
  3. Download all KB5062553 MSU files listed for that installation and place them in one folder, such as C:KB5062553.
  4. Use the KB5062553 page’s DISM procedure to discover and install prerequisite MSU files before applying the cumulative update. The prerequisite relationship matters; installing only the newest file can reproduce the same servicing error.

Install the individually documented x64 packages in order

For the x64 sequence documented by Microsoft, install KB5043080 first and KB5062553 second. The filenames are:

Open Command Prompt (Admin) and use the DISM package-install syntax shown on Microsoft’s KB page, substituting the path to each file in your folder. A typical path-based form is:

DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"C:KB5062553windows11.0-kb5043080-x64_953449672073f8fb99badb4cc6d5d7849b9c83e8.msu"

When the first package completes, run the corresponding command for the KB5062553 MSU:

DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"C:KB5062553windows11.0-kb5062553-x64_6fe34113fd31b773e8ecb31682dd95b1934be4c1.msu"

Use the exact command and package names published for your architecture on the KB page. If DISM reports that a package is not applicable, stop rather than forcing it; that usually means the edition, architecture, release or prerequisite does not match. Restart when DISM requests it, then check Windows Update again.

When the PC is not running normally

Microsoft also documents a media-based route using Windows installation media, Dynamic Update and commands against a mounted image. This is an optional fallback for administrators or for a system that cannot complete the online repair. It is not required for every KB5062553 failure. Use a bootable USB only when you have confirmed the media matches the installed Windows release and you understand whether you are servicing the running system or a mounted image.

Choose the repair path that fits your situation

Situation Recommended action Important check
Windows boots normally and Reinstall now is available Run the repair reinstall first. It is described as preserving files, apps and settings; still keep a current backup.
Windows boots, but the recovery control is missing or inactive Run the troubleshooter, restart services, then use the manual MSU route. Record the exact error and failure phase.
Architecture is x64 Use the documented x64 files and order. Install KB5043080 before KB5062553 when using the individual sequence.
Architecture is Arm64 Download the Arm64 entries instead of the x64 filenames. Do not apply the x64 packages to an Arm64 installation.
The failure occurs during reboot or servicing Repair Windows first, then retry; use DISM only with matching packages. Allow requested restarts to finish.
Windows will not boot reliably Consider matching installation media and the mounted-image procedure. Media is an optional fallback, not a prerequisite for the online fixes.

Common mistakes that make KB5062553 fail again

  • Installing the wrong architecture: x64 and Arm64 packages are different. Verify System type before downloading.
  • Skipping KB5043080: Microsoft lists it before KB5062553 in the individual x64 sequence.
  • Using a package for another Windows release: KB5062553 targets Windows 11 24H2, OS Build 26100.4652.
  • Stopping a restart: servicing may be incomplete until Windows finishes its reboot phase.
  • Assuming one error code has one fix: 0x800F0991, 0x800F0983, 0x800705B9, 0x800706BE and 0x80073712 appear in reports with different circumstances.
  • Repeating a failed download without checking services: BITS, Cryptographic Services, Windows Update and Windows Installer all participate in the update workflow.

What to do if every branch fails

Record the Windows 11 edition, architecture, current OS build, exact KB5062553 error, the stage at which it fails and whether Reinstall now was available. Then repeat the manual package check, confirming that every downloaded MSU matches the device and that the prerequisite package was installed first. If Windows remains unstable or cannot boot, move to the installation-media and mounted-image procedure documented by Microsoft rather than repeatedly forcing the same online attempt.

There is no published success rate showing that one method resolves every KB5062553 installation. The repair reinstall, service checks and manual MSU sequence are evidence-backed options, but the result depends on the individual Windows installation and the precise servicing failure.
