Jujutsu Kaisen has no single canon power-level number. A fighter’s practical strength comes from several interacting factors: cursed-energy reserves, peak output, control and efficiency, the rules of an innate cursed technique, domain or anti-domain skill, physical ability, recovery options, matchup conditions, information, environment, and the cost of any binding vow or Heavenly Restriction.
That is why a character with less raw cursed energy can defeat a seemingly stronger opponent. A precise technique, a favorable interaction, superior barrier skill, or a restriction that converts risk into output can matter more than a simple “higher tier.”

What do Jujutsu Kaisen power levels actually measure?
The series presents strength as a multidimensional combat problem rather than a numbered ladder. Cursed energy is the resource that powers reinforcement, techniques and barriers, but the size of a reserve does not tell you how quickly it can be released, how accurately it can be controlled, or how much is wasted. A technique’s conditions and blind spots can matter just as much as its destructive force.

Use the following axes when comparing two characters. A conclusion is meaningful only when it states the situation being compared: a duel with no preparation, an ambush, a domain clash, a long battle, or a fight in a particular environment can produce different winners.
#1 Best Overall
| Axis | What it measures | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Cursed-energy reserves | How much energy a fighter can draw on before exhaustion | A large reserve supports prolonged reinforcement, repeated techniques and barriers, but does not guarantee efficient use |
| Peak output and reinforcement | How much force can be delivered at once and how strongly the body can be enhanced | High output can decide a brief exchange; reinforcement affects speed, durability and striking power |
| Efficiency and control | How precisely energy is shaped and how little is lost | An efficient fighter may outlast a larger reserve and maintain a technique under pressure |
| Innate technique | Rules, range, reliability, versatility and activation cost | A lower-output technique can win through precision, information advantage or a favorable interaction |
| Domain or anti-domain capability | Barrier mastery, refinement, sure-hit behavior and counters | A domain is decisive only if it can be completed, maintained and answered by the opponent |
| Physical ability | Speed, durability, senses and close-combat skill | Some fighters remain dangerous when techniques are unavailable or disrupted |
| Recovery | Reverse-cursed-technique access and other confirmed healing options | Recovery changes the number of mistakes a fighter can survive and the length of a battle |
| Conditions | Matchup, information, terrain, preparation and restrictions | The same fighter can be favored in one scenario and disadvantaged in another |
This framework explains why fan-made tier lists disagree without either side necessarily misunderstanding the story. They may be measuring different axes or assuming different battle conditions.
How cursed energy supplies strength
Cursed energy is produced from negative emotion and serves as the basic fuel of jujutsu. Sorcerers and curses use it to reinforce the body, activate cursed techniques and construct or maintain barriers. General assessments of a sorcerer’s or curse’s strength often begin with cursed-energy level, but “level” should be read as a broad assessment, not a universal numerical score.
Reserves are not the same as output
Reserves describe the total amount available. Output describes how much can be released in a moment. A fighter with a deep reserve may be able to continue after an opponent with greater burst power has spent their energy, while a high-output specialist can end an exchange before endurance matters. Comparing only total reserves misses this difference.
Reinforcement turns energy into physical performance
Body reinforcement converts cursed energy into practical speed, striking force and durability. Two characters with similar reserves can therefore perform very differently if one has better timing, control or physical conditioning. Reinforcement also matters when a technique is unsuitable for a particular target or when a barrier prevents immediate use of an innate ability.
Efficiency decides what remains after the first exchange
Control determines how much energy is lost while reinforcing the body, shaping a technique or sustaining a barrier. Efficient use can preserve resources for a second phase of a fight, including recovery or a domain attempt. In a long battle, efficiency may be more important than the largest visible attack.
Rank #2
How cursed techniques determine who wins
A cursed technique is an individual ability expressed through cursed energy. Its written rules are part of its power: activation conditions, targeting, range, timing, precision, possible applications and the consequences of failure all shape the matchup.
Rules can outweigh raw destructive force
A technique does not need the highest apparent output to be dangerous. Reliable precision can exploit a weakness that a broader attack cannot reach. A technique with a narrow range may dominate at close quarters, while one with greater range may control an open area but struggle if an opponent closes the distance. Information about the technique can be as valuable as the technique itself because it lets a defender choose the correct counter before taking a decisive hit.

Reliability and activation cost matter
When comparing techniques, ask how often the ability can be used, what it requires, whether the user must expose themselves, and what happens if the activation is interrupted. A spectacular effect that needs unusual conditions may be less useful than a modest effect that works repeatedly. The most accurate comparison states those conditions instead of treating every activation as automatic.
Matchups are part of the technique’s power
Jujutsu Kaisen repeatedly treats compatibility as consequential. A technique can be unusually effective against one opponent and awkward against another because of range, defenses, timing or the way effects interact. A ranking that ignores the opponent’s ability is therefore incomplete. “Stronger technique” is not a universal category; it is often shorthand for “better in this encounter.”
What Domain Expansion adds
Domain Expansion is an advanced barrier technique. The user manifests an innate domain, imbues the barrier with their cursed technique and normally creates a guaranteed-hit effect inside it. This combines technique mastery, barrier construction and a major expenditure of cursed energy, making a domain a high-impact option rather than a free upgrade.
Refinement is more than having a domain
When two domain users meet, the comparison involves refinement and barrier skill, not merely ownership of a domain. The structure must be completed and maintained, the technique must function as intended inside it, and the user must still have enough energy to fight afterward. A less refined domain can fail to impose its intended conditions even when its underlying technique is dangerous.
Evaluate the sure-hit effect and its counterplay
Ask what the guaranteed hit actually does, what defenses can mitigate it, and whether the opponent can disrupt the barrier, escape its range or deploy an anti-domain measure. The phrase “guaranteed hit” describes the domain’s normal operating principle; it does not mean every domain wins every clash regardless of technique interaction or barrier skill.
The cost after activation is part of the calculation
A domain may decide a short confrontation but leave its user depleted or unable to repeat the option immediately. Compare stamina before activation, the likelihood of a follow-up exchange and the user’s recovery access. In a prolonged battle, surviving the domain can be as important as resisting its effect.
How binding vows convert limits into power
A self-imposed binding vow trades a limitation, risk or loss of freedom for increased cursed-energy or technique effectiveness. The benefit is conditional. It should be treated as a change to the user’s operating rules, not as a permanent rank that applies in every situation.
| Example | What is exchanged | How to read the boost |
|---|---|---|
| Nanami’s overtime restriction | He limits his working period and accepts a later, defined phase of combat | Additional effectiveness is tied to the restriction’s conditions rather than being constant |
| Mei Mei’s Bird Strike trade | A crow is sacrificed in a deliberately extreme exchange | The attack’s force comes from the specific risk and sacrifice, not from an ordinary baseline attack |
| Sukuna’s escape-route condition for Malevolent Shrine | A condition involving an available route or limitation in how the domain operates | The domain’s effectiveness must be judged together with the condition that enables it |
When a vow appears in a fight, record three things: the exact restriction, the benefit it produces and the circumstances under which the benefit ends. Calling a character “stronger because of a vow” without recording those terms hides the trade-off.

What Heavenly Restriction changes
Heavenly Restriction is imposed at birth rather than chosen during a fight. It exchanges one aspect of a person’s innate condition for an exceptional advantage elsewhere. Because the exchange is foundational, it can produce a radically different combat profile from an ordinary cursed-energy user.
| Character example | Restriction trade | Combat implication |
|---|---|---|
| Toji Fushiguro | Cursed energy is traded for exceptional physical ability | Speed, senses and physical combat can become the primary source of dominance, with cursed-energy detection working differently from a conventional sorcerer |
| Maki Zenin | A similar exchange produces extraordinary physical capability | Her evaluation cannot rely on cursed-energy reserves; physical performance and weapon use are central axes |
| Kokichi Muta | Bodily health is traded for unusually large cursed-energy capacity and remote reach | Large reserves and broad operational range come with severe physical costs |
Heavenly Restriction demonstrates why cursed-energy quantity cannot be the sole definition of strength. A character with little or no conventional cursed energy may still dominate through physical performance, senses, weapons and preparation. Conversely, an enormous reserve may be inseparable from debilitating bodily limitations.
A practical method for comparing two characters
Use this procedure when reading a fight, building a tier list or checking whether a claimed ranking is actually answering a narrower question.
- Define the scenario. State whether the fighters have preparation, what they know about each other, where the fight occurs and whether outside assistance is allowed.
- Record the resource profile. Note confirmed cursed-energy reserves, peak output, reinforcement quality, control and efficiency. Do not convert unknown values into invented numbers.
- Map the innate techniques. Write down range, activation requirements, reliability, defensive applications, known limits and the information each user has.
- Check domain capability. Identify whether either fighter has Domain Expansion, how refined the barrier is, what the sure-hit effect does and which anti-domain options are confirmed.
- Add physical and recovery factors. Include speed, durability, close-combat skill, cursed tools and any canon-confirmed reverse-cursed-technique or other recovery access.
- Apply restrictions. List every binding-vow condition or Heavenly Restriction trade and specify when its benefit is available.
- Test the interaction. Ask which ability reaches the other first, whether one technique bypasses or disrupts the other, and how the environment changes range or movement.
- Separate outcomes. Give distinct conclusions for a sudden encounter, an informed rematch and a prolonged battle when the evidence supports different results.
This method produces a scenario-based judgment such as “favored in a short, informed domain clash” rather than an unsupported claim that one character has a universal score above another.

Information changes defensive choices
Knowing an activation condition can prevent an otherwise fatal mistake. A fighter who understands the opponent’s range, timing or sacrifice may refuse the exact exchange the technique is designed to win. Surprise therefore belongs in the comparison alongside output and reserves.
Terrain changes the value of range and mobility
Open ground favors abilities that need distance or broad lines of attack. Confined spaces can reward close-combat specialists, limit movement or make a barrier harder to avoid. Buildings, crowds and available objects can also change whether a technique has suitable targets or whether collateral risk becomes a restriction.
Preparation changes the available toolkit
Preparation can provide cursed tools, planned vows, decoys or a route that avoids a direct exchange. A “strongest character” claim that allows preparation for one fighter but not the other is comparing different rulesets. State the preparation assumption before drawing a conclusion.
What official reference material establishes
Shueisha’s official listing for the 2021 fanbook describes a 232-page reference fully supervised by Gege Akutami. It contains profiles for more than 70 characters, over 350 author questions and a dedicated chapter for terms and settings; its release date was March 4, 2021. Those features make it useful for terminology and profile context, but they do not create a single numerical score for every fighter.

No authoritative canon reference establishes one universal number that ranks every character. Any chart presenting such a number is an interpretation unless it clearly identifies its own criteria and scenario.
How the video game differs from canon power measurement
Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash uses a game-oriented progression system. Bandai Namco’s product description says: “Characters will increase in Cursed Energy Level throughout battles and can unleash stronger attacks over time.” That wording describes an in-game mechanic designed for match flow. It should not be treated as evidence that the manga or official reference books assign every character a permanent numerical power level.
Common mistakes in JJK power debates
- Reducing strength to cursed-energy quantity: reserves do not show output, efficiency, technique interaction or physical ability.
- Treating a domain as an automatic victory: refinement, sure-hit behavior, counters, stamina and barrier disruption still matter.
- Ignoring the price of a vow: a conditional boost is not a permanent tier increase.
- Comparing feats without conditions: information, terrain, preparation and the opponent’s technique can change the result.
- Inventing precise scores: the canon does not provide a complete universal numerical scale, so fabricated rankings create false certainty.
- Ignoring non-technique fighters: Heavenly Restriction can move the center of a character’s power from cursed energy to physical ability and weapons.
The most accurate way to state a ranking
Use qualified language that identifies what is being measured: highest peak output, deepest reserve, strongest domain, best efficiency, most dangerous close-range fighter or most favorable matchup. Then state the assumptions. “Character A is favored in a short fight because their technique reaches first” is more informative than “Character A is level 10.”
Jujutsu Kaisen’s power system is compelling precisely because these variables interact. Cursed energy supplies the fuel, cursed techniques define the available actions, domains impose advanced conditions, and vows or Heavenly Restrictions change the price of using power. A sound comparison keeps all of those elements visible instead of collapsing them into one invented number.
