Apple’s leadership profile lists him as CEO and a board director. His appointment matters because a leader with a long record in Apple’s product engineering now has responsibility for the company as a whole—but his background alone does not establish what strategy he will pursue.
Who is John Ternus?
Ternus is an Apple executive and mechanical engineer. Before joining Apple, he worked at Virtual Research Systems. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Apple’s leadership profile identifies him as the company’s CEO and a board director.

What products and engineering work is he associated with?
Apple says Ternus oversaw engineering across iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch, and was instrumental in introducing iPad and AirPods. It also credits him with work involving product reliability and durability, materials innovation, and advances in reparability. These are Apple’s descriptions of his leadership and portfolio—not evidence that he personally designed every product in those categories.
#1 Best Overall
Apple’s June 2024 report Longevity, by Design named Ternus as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering and outlined the company’s approach to repair. Apple says it weighs repairability alongside durability, safety, security, privacy, and environmental impact. The report uses iPhone 15 repairability and battery design as company examples; it does not independently measure Ternus’s individual contribution.
In that report, Ternus wrote: “Repairability is an essential component of longevity, yet optimizing for repairability alone may not yield the best outcome for our customers or the environment.” The statement describes a balancing principle, rather than a promise that every device will be equally easy to repair.
Why does his appointment matter?
Ternus’s appointment puts a hardware engineering leader in charge of Apple’s broader business. His previous responsibilities connected him to major device families, but the CEO role extends beyond engineering. That makes his career relevant context for understanding the change in leadership, not proof of what decisions he will make next. No published statistic in the cited sources measures his personal influence or performance.

Apple’s succession announcement also clarified the leadership transition: Tim Cook became executive chairman, while Johny Srouji took over Hardware Engineering leadership as chief hardware officer. Their roles are distinct from Ternus’s CEO position. Apple said of Srouji, “Johny has been an incredible partner on the executive team, and is going to be an extraordinary chief hardware officer. I look forward to continuing to work closely with him in our new roles.”

What has Ternus said about technology?
In a Tom’s Guide interview updated April 23, 2026, Ternus described Apple’s product-oriented approach this way: “We never think about shipping technology. We always think about ‘how can we leverage technology to ship amazing products’”. The comment speaks to product development; it is not a detailed statement of his priorities as CEO.
