It offers three practical approaches: a hosted image embed, a configurable card, or an SVG generated into your own repository. The right choice depends on how much setup and control you want, and whether you want the README to depend on a hosted image service.
How Stack Fingerprint builds a card
According to creator MattQ’s October 1, 2026 article, the scanner makes a recursive request to GitHub’s Git Trees API to retrieve a repository’s file tree. It checks file paths for recognizable files and maps dependencies found in manifests such as package.json, pyproject.toml, Gemfile, and composer.json to technologies.

MattQ says the catalog contains “200+ signals” across areas including languages, frameworks, UI libraries, databases, testing, build tools, and infrastructure. The article also says the scanner tracks dependency sources, allowing dependencies found only in devDependencies to be marked as development-only. These are the author’s descriptions; no independent benchmark or error-rate measurement is established.
Choose how the card is delivered
| Option | What it does | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted embed | Adds the service’s generated image endpoint to a README. MattQ says basic use needs no token, signup, or configuration file. | Quickest to set up, but the README relies on the hosted service to serve the image. |
| Configured card | Uses the web builder to choose the card’s appearance and output Markdown or HTML. MattQ’s article describes 10+ themes, 10 layouts, four sizes, and icon styles. | Provides visual choices, but its available options may change over time. |
| Repository SVG | A GitHub Action generates an SVG on a GitHub runner and commits it to the repository. | Avoids relying on the hosted image endpoint when the README renders, while adding a workflow and commit to maintain. |
MattQ also describes a curl workflow and one-click Vercel deployment. The article does not establish that every component of these workflows has undergone an independent security review.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Control which technologies appear
Automatic detection is a starting point, not a guarantee that every detected signal belongs in a project’s public-facing summary. MattQ reports feedback about unused technologies, false positives, mixed signals in monorepos, and badge lists that grew long enough to misrepresent a project. The available controls address different versions of that problem:
allincludes all signals, with development-only signals dimmed.prodonlylimits the card to production dependencies.topshows languages and frameworks, with a maximum of five signals for a more compact view.- A
pathsetting scopes scanning to a subdirectory, which is useful when a monorepo contains distinct applications or packages. .stackfingerprint.jsoncan specify technologies to ignore or pin, and custom labels for technologies.
These controls are useful for editorial judgment as well as technical filtering: a detected dependency or configuration file does not by itself prove that a technology is central to the repository.

Decide whether to use hosted or local output
Use the hosted embed for a low-maintenance README
If simplicity matters most, the hosted image is the direct route described by the author: add the image endpoint to the README and let the service provide the card. Its principal dependency is availability of that image service when readers view the README.

Use a committed SVG when you want the artifact in the repository
The GitHub Action route generates the image on GitHub runners and commits the SVG. According to MattQ, this means the README no longer depends on the hosted image endpoint at render time. It shifts responsibility toward the repository workflow: maintainers should decide whether they are comfortable with the action and its permissions, inspect what it runs, and review the resulting changes. The article’s description is not an independent security assessment.

Use filtering and path scoping to improve relevance
For a repository with several subprojects, scope the scan to the relevant directory rather than letting a single card mix their signals. For a concise overview, choose top; when development dependencies would distract from the production stack, choose prodonly. Use ignore, pin, and relabel controls when the automatic result needs a deliberate correction.
What to keep in mind
- The card reflects repository signals, not a complete audit of what is installed, deployed, actively used, or important to the project.
- The author’s reported feedback explains why filtering, monorepo scoping, and compact output exist; it does not quantify how often false positives occur.
- MattQ says caching headers, including
stale-while-revalidate, help with GitHub rate limits, and that self-contained SVGs are straightforward to cache. These are implementation claims in the author’s article, not independently verified performance or rate-limit guarantees. - Details such as supported signals, builder choices, hosted availability, and action versions can change. Check the current project materials before relying on a particular option.
Project details for maintainers
MattQ describes the project as using Next.js App Router, a hand-written SVG builder, simple-icons, Tailwind CSS, Supabase for a showcase, and Vercel hosting. The article says technology signals are added in src/data/signals.js, with dependency-map entries added as needed; themes are in src/data/themes.js. These paths and stack details are the author’s account of the project and may change.
