Jio has proposed a low Earth orbit (LEO) network of about 1,600 satellites, supported by 23 planned ground stations, to extend connectivity to remote parts of India and maritime areas. The proposal was presented at India Mobile Congress 2026; it is not a deployed constellation, and Jio did not announce a launch date at the event. Mint and Moneycontrol reported the presentation.
What Jio has proposed—and what it has not launched
The plan describes roughly 1,600 LEO satellites and 23 ground stations in India. Both are proposed infrastructure, not assets confirmed as deployed. Jio’s stated ambition is to complement its existing mobile and fibre networks with satellite connectivity, rather than replace terrestrial infrastructure. The event reports describe a proposal, not a commercial service announcement or an operational schedule.

Jio’s presentation was reported as targeting more than 600,000 villages, along with remote islands, border outposts, land areas and maritime regions. These figures and locations express the coverage vision; they are not independently measured service coverage or guarantees that every location will be served.

What the 23 ground stations are for
Ground stations provide the planned connection between satellites and infrastructure on the ground. They can link the space segment to terrestrial networks, which in turn connect users and services. Jio has also said its Indian ground stations are intended to support partner satellite constellations as well as future Jio satellites. That makes the ground network relevant to both near-term use of partner capacity and a longer-term constellation of its own. Reliance Industries’ 2026 shareholder remarks describe this broader approach.

Who the coverage vision is meant to reach
Satellite links may help where building or extending fibre and terrestrial radio networks is difficult, including remote, coastal, island, border and mountainous locations. In a 29 January 2026 written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the Ministry of Communications noted that satellite communications can provide connectivity in rural, underserved and unserved areas that are difficult to cover using terrestrial media such as optical fibre and microwave. That is a general explanation of satellite’s potential, not confirmation of Jio’s future coverage. Ministry of Communications reply.
Jio’s reported goals include villages, remote islands, border outposts and maritime coverage. Whether the proposed network will serve a particular place, and with what performance or eligibility rules, has not been established. Satellite access would complement existing networks; it does not by itself establish that a location will receive a Jio service or that terrestrial connectivity will be unnecessary.

How the LEO proposal differs from JioSpaceFiber
Jio’s proposed LEO constellation is distinct from JioSpaceFiber’s earlier demonstration. In a release dated 27 October 2023, Jio said the demonstration used SES O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites, which operate in medium Earth orbit (MEO), and named sites in Gir, Korba, Nabrangpur and ONGC-Jorhat. That company-reported demonstration is evidence of a separate partnership and technology track; it does not show that the proposed Jio LEO service is available. Jio’s JioSpaceFiber announcement.

Jio has described a parallel strategy: use capacity from global satellite providers while evaluating its own constellation and developing ground infrastructure. In a 2022 joint-venture announcement, SES and Jio said the venture could access up to 100 Gbps of capacity from SES. That was a historical statement about the partnership’s stated capacity availability—not a current customer speed, a measurement of Jio LEO performance or a specification for the proposed 1,600-satellite system. What Jio’s satellite licence means
On 29 January 2026, the Ministry of Communications said the Department of Telecommunications had issued Jio Satellite Communications Limited a Unified License authorization for Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) service. This is relevant regulatory context, but a licence is not the same as a launch, a spectrum assignment for a particular system, operational readiness or a consumer launch announcement. The ministry’s written reply does not establish a commercial start date or consumer offer.

The 2026 event reports and cited company and government statements do not establish a deployment schedule, consumer plans or prices, user equipment, service eligibility, measured latency or throughput, or an operational coverage map. Those details are necessary to assess the service as a customer option. Until Jio makes them public, the 1,600 satellites and 23 stations should be understood as planned infrastructure and the coverage claims as ambitions, not an orderable service.
