There is no universal winner. For most investors seeking liquid, portfolio-based gold exposure, a gold ETF is usually the cleanest implementation. Physical gold is better suited to people who value possession, gifting, cultural use or portability. Jewellery stocks are not a substitute for owning gold: they are higher-risk equity investments whose results depend on company growth, margins, execution, valuation, governance and competition.
The three choices represent three different investments
Comparing jewellery stocks, physical gold and gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as though they were interchangeable leads to poor decisions. Each gives you a different type of exposure, carries different costs and solves a different problem.

Jewellery stocks are operating-company equity
When you buy shares of a jewellery retailer or manufacturer, you own a small claim on a business. Your return can come from share-price appreciation and, if the company declares one, dividends. The business must attract customers, sell inventory profitably, manage working capital, open productive stores, control costs and allocate capital sensibly.

Physical gold is direct metal ownership
Coins and bars give you possession of a physical asset. Jewellery also contains gold, but it has a design and personal-use component, so it should not be treated as bullion-equivalent. Premiums, making charges, purity, resale terms and the price a buyer is willing to pay all affect the result.
Physical ownership removes dependence on a securities account, but it creates practical responsibilities: proving purity, storing the metal, preventing theft or damage and finding a willing buyer when you sell.
Gold ETFs are exchange-traded gold exposure
A gold ETF is a financial product traded on a stock exchange. The official consumer-affairs investor guide describes gold ETFs as instruments that can be bought and sold through an exchange like regular stocks. You normally need a brokerage and demat infrastructure rather than a safe or private vault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYour result follows the ETF’s gold exposure after expenses, tracking differences, trading spreads and other product frictions. The ETF is convenient, but it is not identical to holding a coin in your hand and not every ETF has the same structure, liquidity or cost.

| Custody | Brokerage and demat account | Personal storage, vault or other safekeeping | Brokerage, demat and the product’s custodian structure |
| Typical cost areas | Brokerage, bid-ask spread and company-specific valuation risk | Premium, making charge where applicable, storage, insurance and resale deduction | Brokerage, bid-ask spread, expense ratio and tracking difference |
| Regular income | A company may pay dividends, but payment is not guaranteed | None from the metal itself | None from the gold exposure itself |
| Distinctive risks | Execution, earnings, balance-sheet, governance, competition and valuation risk | Theft, loss, damage, purity disputes and resale friction | Gold-price, market-structure, tracking, liquidity, regulatory and counterparty considerations |

How returns are actually generated
Jewellery-stock returns depend on the business, not just bullion
Analyze a jewellery stock as you would any other equity security. The central questions are:
- Is revenue growth translating into profit growth, or is the company buying sales through discounts and higher costs?
- Are gross and operating margins stable across changes in gold prices and customer demand?
- Are new stores productive after rent, staff, inventory and marketing costs?
- How much working capital is tied up in inventory, and how is that inventory financed?
- Does management explain risks, controls, related-party transactions and capital-allocation decisions clearly?
- Is the current share price already assuming years of strong growth?
Brand strength, market-share gains and operating leverage can produce returns that exceed the change in gold prices. The reverse is also true: a weak business can underperform bullion during a strong gold market. A gold-price chart is therefore not a substitute for reading financial statements and assessing valuation.
Illustration: what company numbers add to the analysis
Kalyan Jewellers India Limited is an illustrative listed-company example, not a recommendation. Its FY2024-25 annual report reports consolidated total income of ₹251,896.67 million and consolidated profit after tax of ₹7,141.73 million, compared with ₹186,219.93 million and ₹5,962.85 million respectively in FY2023-24. The same 2025 annual report says the company maintains a risk-management mechanism and addresses identified risks through continuing mitigation actions.

Those figures show why an equity investor must examine both growth and the quality of the systems producing it. They do not establish that the shares will outperform gold, nor do they remove the risks associated with valuation, competition or future execution.
Gold returns come mainly from price appreciation
Gold itself does not generate rent, interest or operating profit. The World Gold Council’s Gold as a strategic asset: 2026 edition states: “A widely perceived drawback of gold is that it does not provide a regular income, unlike other asset classes such as bonds, property or even some company stocks.” An investor generally depends on a higher future selling price.
The same 2026 research reports that gold generated positive long-term returns across multiple historical horizons and that above-ground stocks grew by approximately 1.7% per year over the prior 25 years. These are historical observations, not a promise or forecast. The report also describes more than US$15 trillion of investable gold in its 2026 market primer, a measure of market scale rather than a return expectation.
A jewellery stock can pay a dividend or reinvest earnings, but that income does not make it safer than gold. Shareholders still face the company’s balance sheet, governance, valuation and business-cycle risks.

Jewellery stocks
Listed shares are generally easy to buy or sell during exchange hours, but the price can move sharply and the quoted price is not a guarantee that a large order will execute at that level. Brokerage and the bid-ask spread reduce returns. The larger cost, however, may be paying an excessive valuation for expected growth and then suffering a fall in the valuation multiple.
There is no need to store the shares physically, but you depend on a broker, demat account, exchange and the rules governing listed securities. Corporate actions, disclosures and trading halts are part of the ownership experience.
Physical gold
A coin or bar may be bought above the value of its fine-gold content. Jewellery can add design and making charges that may not be recovered on resale. Storage, insurance, transport and authentication can create additional costs. When you sell, the buyer may test purity, deduct a spread or refuse a piece whose documentation or condition is unclear.

The official consumer-affairs investor guide treats physical gold as a distinct route and highlights storage charges and theft risk. SEBI disclosures likewise identify risks in handling, storing and safekeeping physical gold, including the possibility that some or all of the metal could be lost, damaged or stolen.

Gold ETFs
ETFs avoid personal vaulting, but they are not cost-free. Check the expense ratio, the difference between the ETF’s market price and its underlying value, the bid-ask spread, trading volume, custodian arrangements and the fund’s regulatory documents. A product with a low headline fee can still be inconvenient if it trades with a wide spread or insufficient liquidity.
SEBI disclosures identify gold-price risks arising from demand and supply, economic and political developments, interest rates, inflation and exchange rates, along with possible restrictions affecting gold or its trade. These risks apply to the underlying exposure; the ETF adds product and market-structure considerations.
What recent Indian ETF demand does—and does not—show
The World Gold Council reported net Indian gold-ETF demand of 20 tonnes in the first quarter of 2026, using data through March 31, 2026. That is evidence of meaningful participation in financialised gold exposure. It is not evidence that ETFs will outperform physical gold or jewellery stocks, and it does not remove the need to check an individual fund’s liquidity, structure and costs.
The available company and ETF evidence in this comparison is India-focused. Indian demand patterns, listed-company reporting, market rules and any tax treatment should not be assumed to apply unchanged in another country. Before investing outside India, use the relevant local regulator, exchange and product documents.
Which option fits your objective?
Choose a gold ETF for liquid portfolio exposure
A gold ETF is usually the most straightforward choice when your objective is to add gold exposure to an investment portfolio, rebalance without handling metal and trade through a familiar exchange account. It is particularly suitable when you do not need to gift, wear or personally control the underlying metal.
Accept that the result will differ from a theoretical spot-gold return because of expenses, tracking difference and trading conditions. Read the fund documents rather than assuming every ETF has identical protections or costs.

Choose physical gold when possession has real utility
Physical gold makes sense when direct possession is part of the objective: gifting, cultural or personal use, emergency portability or independence from a financial account. It is a utility-and-ownership decision as much as an investment decision.
If investment efficiency is the only goal, physical ownership is harder to justify because premiums, storage, theft protection, purity verification and resale deductions create friction. Jewellery is especially unsuitable as a pure bullion proxy when making charges and design preferences dominate the purchase price.
Consider jewellery stocks only for a deliberate equity thesis
Buy a jewellery stock only if you want exposure to a particular company’s growth and are prepared to evaluate its accounts, management, competitive position and valuation. Do not buy it merely because gold prices are rising or because the company sells a product associated with gold.
Your thesis should explain how the company can grow sales, preserve margins, earn acceptable returns on new stores, fund inventory and withstand competition. It should also state what would invalidate that thesis.
How to evaluate a jewellery stock step by step
- Define the business. Identify whether the company is primarily a retailer, manufacturer, wholesaler or a mixture, and note its geographic and brand concentration.
- Read several years of financial statements. Compare revenue, operating profit, net profit, cash flow, debt and share count rather than relying on a single quarter.
- Test growth quality. Separate growth from new stores, same-store sales, acquisitions, higher gold prices and changes in product mix.
- Examine inventory and working capital. Check inventory days, receivables, supplier financing and the cash conversion cycle. A fast-growing retailer can still create financial pressure if inventory absorbs cash.
- Assess store economics. Ask how long new locations take to reach acceptable productivity and whether expansion returns exceed the cost of capital.
- Review governance and controls. Read risk disclosures, related-party information, auditor comments and management explanations of identified risks.
- Value the shares independently. Compare the price with realistic earnings and cash-flow scenarios. A strong business can be a poor investment if expectations are already excessive.
- Set monitoring rules. Decide which changes in margins, debt, store productivity, governance or competitive conditions would make you reduce or exit the position.
How to buy physical gold more safely
When a physical coin or bar is the chosen route, the product and the transaction matter as much as the gold price.
- Choose the form deliberately. A coin or bar is easier to compare with bullion value than jewellery, while jewellery may justify itself through use or gifting rather than investment efficiency.
- Verify purity and weight. Obtain independent, readable documentation and ensure the stated fineness and weight match the item and invoice.
- Compare the total purchase price. Separate the metal value from premiums, minting, design or making charges, taxes where applicable and delivery fees.
- Check the seller’s reputation and return terms. A low advertised premium is not useful if authenticity, buyback terms or customer support are unclear.
- Plan custody before purchase. Decide where the item will be stored, who can access it and how you will protect it against theft, loss and damage.
- Keep records. Retain invoices, purity certificates, photographs and any appraisal needed for insurance or later resale.
- Understand the exit route. Ask potential buyers how they test the item, what deductions they make and whether they buy back the same product.
Owning a physical gold coin does not automatically make it a better investment than an ETF. It simply gives you direct possession, with the associated responsibilities and frictions.
How to use a gold ETF responsibly
- Confirm the product type. Read the scheme documents to establish what the ETF holds, how it values the exposure and who provides custody.
- Check trading conditions. Look at average volume, typical bid-ask spreads and the relationship between the exchange price and the fund’s indicative or reported value.
- Review recurring costs. Note the expense ratio and any other charges that reduce the value of your holding over time.
- Understand tracking difference. Compare the ETF’s historical performance with its stated benchmark, remembering that past tracking does not guarantee future tracking.
- Use an appropriate order. A limit order can help control the execution price when spreads are wide or the market is moving quickly; the order may not fill.
- Rebalance by policy, not headlines. Decide in advance how much gold exposure fits your portfolio and when you will adjust it.
- Keep jurisdiction in mind. Verify current local rules, reporting requirements and tax treatment with the applicable regulator or a qualified adviser; those details are not universal and can change.
Risks investors commonly underestimate
Assuming a gold-price rise guarantees a jewellery-stock gain
The stock market prices expected future earnings, not the metal in a retailer’s showcases. Higher gold prices can reduce affordability, alter product mix or weaken volumes. A company may offset those effects through pricing and productivity, but the outcome depends on execution.

Treating jewellery as an investment-grade bullion substitute
A piece can have emotional, cultural and wearable value while still being an inefficient way to obtain gold exposure. Making charges, design premiums and resale deductions mean the purchase price and recoverable metal value can be very different.
Ignoring implementation costs in an ETF
Exchange trading does not mean frictionless trading. Expenses, spread, tracking difference, custody arrangements and liquidity all affect the investor’s realised result.
Confusing historical evidence with a forecast
Historical positive returns, the approximately 1.7% annual growth in above-ground gold stock reported for the prior 25 years and Q1 2026 ETF demand are observations, not promises of future performance.
Using one allocation for every objective
Someone seeking emergency portability, a wedding gift or a liquid portfolio hedge is solving a different problem from someone seeking long-term equity compounding. The correct instrument follows the objective.
A practical decision framework
| If your priority is… | Most natural starting point | What you must accept |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid gold exposure and easy portfolio rebalancing | Gold ETF | Fund expenses, tracking difference, trading spreads and financial-account dependence |
| Physical possession, gifting or cultural use | Physical coin, bar or jewellery chosen for that use | Premiums, storage, theft protection, purity checks and resale friction |
| Participation in a specific jewellery company’s growth | Jewellery stock | Company, valuation, governance, competition and execution risk |
| Regular income | None of the gold exposures provides guaranteed income; a stock may pay a discretionary dividend | Gold has no regular cash flow, and dividends depend on company policy and results |
Final verdict
For a reader whose sole aim is efficient, liquid gold exposure in a portfolio, a gold ETF is generally the cleanest route. Physical gold is the better answer when possession, gifting, cultural use, portability or personal custody matters enough to justify its costs and risks. Jewellery stocks belong in the equity bucket: they can benefit from brand strength and business growth, but they can also underperform gold because of weak execution, expensive valuations, financing pressure or governance problems.
Before choosing, state the objective in one sentence, identify the risks you are willing to carry and calculate the costs of buying, holding and selling. That process is more reliable than assuming that any asset associated with gold will behave like gold.
