Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteErsatzTV is the better choice when your main goal is to turn a personal media library into scheduled, custom linear channels. It supplies the channel-building and playout logic: you organize media, define collections, create channels, and schedule programs. Jellyfin is best used as the playback and Live TV layer, where viewers can browse the guide, watch channels, and record them.
You can run ErsatzTV by itself with a compatible client, or connect it to Jellyfin by adding ErsatzTV’s M3U playlist as a tuner and its XMLTV feed as guide data. That combined arrangement gives you ErsatzTV’s scheduling depth inside Jellyfin’s familiar library and Live TV interface.

The short answer: use ErsatzTV for channel creation and Jellyfin for playback
The two applications solve different problems. ErsatzTV Legacy describes itself as software for configuring and streaming custom live channels from your media library. Its documented workflow is to install the software, add media, create collections, create channels, create schedules, and configure clients.
Jellyfin’s documented Live TV feature is centered on consuming live sources. It can connect to HDHomeRun tuners and M3U IPTV playlists, ingest guide data in XMLTV or Schedules Direct formats, display what is currently playing and what is scheduled next, and record broadcasts. It does not provide ErsatzTV’s purpose-built workflow for turning an on-demand library into a programmed channel lineup.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the practical decision straightforward:
- Choose ErsatzTV alone when channel scheduling and automated playout are the core requirement and you are comfortable using one of its supported clients.
- Choose Jellyfin alone when you already have an HDHomeRun or IPTV source and mainly need a media-server interface for viewing, guide browsing, and recording.
- Combine ErsatzTV and Jellyfin when you want custom channels generated from your own library but prefer Jellyfin as the viewer-facing Live TV application.
What each application contributes
ErsatzTV: the channel engine
ErsatzTV models a library as scheduled television. You can bring in media, group it into collections, assign those collections to channels, and arrange schedules that determine what airs and when. The result is a continuously programmed stream rather than a list of files that viewers select on demand.
Its media documentation identifies four library kinds: Local, Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby. Local libraries can include additional media kinds, while synchronization from Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby is documented for Movies and Shows. If your server library contains other kinds of media, verify that they are available through a local library or another supported arrangement before designing the channel lineup around them.
Jellyfin: the Live TV and playback layer
Jellyfin accepts live sources through tuner configuration. Its supported tuner types include HDHomeRun and M3U. For guide information, it supports XMLTV and Schedules Direct data. Guide data is required for browsing what is playing now, seeing what will air later, and scheduling television recordings.

| Scheduling and playout | Create channels, collections, and schedules | Consumes scheduled streams and exposes guide data | ErsatzTV controls what airs |
| Live source input | Reads local media and synchronized server libraries | HDHomeRun and M3U tuner support | Jellyfin receives ErsatzTV as an M3U tuner |
| Guide data | Generates an XMLTV feed for its channels | Accepts XMLTV and Schedules Direct data | Jellyfin reads ErsatzTV’s XMLTV feed |
| Recording | Acts as the channel source | Can view and record M3U-based channels | Jellyfin handles recordings of ErsatzTV channels |
| Playback clients | Documents integrations through M3U/XMLTV feeds | Provides its own server and client ecosystem | Use Jellyfin or another compatible client |
| Transcoding modes | HLS Segmenter or HLS Direct | Plays the delivered stream and may apply its normal playback behavior | Choose the ErsatzTV mode based on hardware and client needs |
How the combined architecture works
Think of the setup as a two-stage broadcast chain:
- Media source: Your local folders or synchronized Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby Movies and Shows are made available to ErsatzTV.
- Channel definition: ErsatzTV collections and schedules decide which item plays on each channel and at what time.
- Stream output: ErsatzTV serves each channel through an M3U playlist and provides matching program metadata through XMLTV.
- Jellyfin ingestion: Jellyfin adds the M3U playlist as a tuner and the XMLTV feed as guide data.
- Viewer experience: Jellyfin displays the channels and guide, plays the streams, and can record them.
The M3U feed identifies the channels and their stream locations. The XMLTV feed supplies names, times, and program information so Jellyfin can build a usable guide. Both feeds need to be configured; adding only the playlist gives you channels without the complete guide experience.
Setting up ErsatzTV channels from your media
ErsatzTV’s quick-start sequence is intentionally linear. Complete each stage before moving to the next so that a missing library item or collection does not become a confusing scheduling problem later.
1. Install ErsatzTV
Install and start ErsatzTV on a system that can access the media you intend to broadcast. The host must be able to read local folders or reach the server libraries you plan to synchronize. Keep in mind that synchronized server libraries cover Movies and Shows according to the documented media support; other local media kinds may require a Local library.

2. Add media items
Create the appropriate library connection and allow ErsatzTV to index the available items. For local media, point it at the relevant folders. For Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby, configure synchronization and confirm that the expected Movies and Shows appear.
3. Create collections
Collections are the programming pools used by schedules. Build them around the way you want a viewer to experience a channel: a genre, era, franchise, mood, or recurring program type. Keeping collections focused makes later schedule rules easier to understand and change.
4. Create channels
Define a channel for each linear service you want to expose. Give channels distinct names and identities so that the guide remains readable when several channels are imported into Jellyfin or another client.
5. Create schedules
Assign collections and scheduling rules to each channel. A schedule determines the sequence of programs and the times at which they begin. Review the resulting timeline before connecting clients; an empty collection or incompatible item can leave a channel with gaps.

6. Configure clients
Once channels are producing streams, use the M3U and XMLTV feeds supplied by ErsatzTV to configure a viewer. ErsatzTV documents integrations for Jellyfin, Plex, TiviMate, Channels DVR Server, and Kodi through these feeds.
Connecting ErsatzTV to Jellyfin
Jellyfin requires two separate additions for a complete integration: a tuner device and television guide data. The labels below follow the documented workflow.
- Open the Jellyfin administration dashboard and go to the Live TV configuration area.
- Choose Add Tuner Device.
- Set the tuner type to M3U Tuner.
- Enter the M3U URL provided by your ErsatzTV installation, then save the tuner.
- Choose Add TV Guide Data.
- Select XMLTV as the guide-data type.
- Enter the XMLTV URL provided by ErsatzTV, save it, and allow Jellyfin to refresh the guide.
- Open Jellyfin’s Live TV view and confirm that channels, current programs, and upcoming programs are present.
The exact feed addresses are generated or displayed by your ErsatzTV instance, so copy them from its channel or client-configuration screen rather than constructing a URL manually. If channels appear without program titles or times, the M3U tuner is working but the XMLTV guide feed has not been added, refreshed, or matched correctly.

Choosing between HLS Segmenter and HLS Direct
ErsatzTV offers two relevant stream modes. The choice affects CPU use, watermark support, and how reliably some clients handle transitions between programs.
HLS Segmenter
HLS Segmenter transcodes content. ErsatzTV documents it as supporting watermarks and offering the best behavior at program boundaries. Choose it when consistent transitions, overlays, or watermarking matter more than minimizing transcoding work.
- Transcodes the source content.
- Supports watermarks.
- Provides the best documented performance at program boundaries.
HLS Direct
HLS Direct does not transcode content and can perform better on low-power systems. Its trade-offs are equally important: it does not support watermarks, and some clients can have problems when one scheduled program ends and the next begins.
- Does not transcode the content.
- Can reduce processing requirements on low-power hardware.
- Does not support watermarks.
- Some clients may show boundary problems during transitions.
There is no universal winner. Use HLS Segmenter when dependable handoffs and watermarks are priorities. Test HLS Direct with the exact clients and media formats you intend to use when lower processing demand is the priority. The documentation provides capability trade-offs, not a universal performance benchmark.
Media-library compatibility and design limits
Local libraries
Local libraries are the flexible option when your files are stored directly on the ErsatzTV host or on mounted storage it can read. The documentation says local libraries support additional media kinds beyond Movies and Shows, making them important for channel concepts that rely on media outside the synchronized server-library scope.
Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby synchronization
ErsatzTV can synchronize Movies and Shows from Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby. This is convenient when metadata and organization already live in one of those servers, but it is not equivalent to importing every media type those servers might contain. Confirm that the items you want to schedule are exposed as supported Movies or Shows before committing to a synchronized-library design.
Jellyfin as both source and destination
Jellyfin can be the source of synchronized Movies and Shows for ErsatzTV and also the destination that displays ErsatzTV’s channels. Those are separate functions. A Jellyfin library connection supplies on-demand media to the channel engine; the M3U and XMLTV configuration makes the resulting linear channels available in Jellyfin Live TV.

Guide data, recording, and what Jellyfin adds
Linear channels are much easier to use when a guide identifies the current and upcoming programs. ErsatzTV’s XMLTV feed carries the schedule it generated. Jellyfin imports that feed so viewers can browse the lineup instead of opening a channel with no context.
Jellyfin’s Live TV documentation states that M3U playlists can be viewed and recorded. That means the combined system can turn a scheduled ErsatzTV channel into a recordable Jellyfin source. The recording workflow remains subject to Jellyfin’s own configuration and storage requirements; ErsatzTV is responsible for supplying the broadcast stream and schedule.

If you already have guide data from another source, Jellyfin also supports XMLTV and Schedules Direct. For ErsatzTV-created channels, however, the matching XMLTV output is the natural choice because it describes the programs ErsatzTV has actually scheduled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Client choices beyond Jellyfin
ErsatzTV’s feeds are not tied to one viewer. Its documented client integrations include Jellyfin, Plex, TiviMate, Channels DVR Server, and Kodi. The practical implication is that you can keep ErsatzTV as the scheduling authority while selecting a client based on the devices, recording features, or interface your household prefers.
When evaluating a client, check three things:
- Whether it accepts an M3U playlist as a live-TV source.
- Whether it accepts XMLTV guide data and matches the channel identifiers correctly.
- Whether it handles the chosen HLS mode and transitions between scheduled programs reliably.
Jellyfin is the most natural choice when you already use it for your library and want one interface for on-demand media, guide browsing, and recordings. A different client may be preferable if its device support or live-TV workflow better fits your viewing setup, but the channel-generation work still remains in ErsatzTV.
Which setup fits your goal?
You want themed channels from movies and shows
Use ErsatzTV. Its collections, channels, and schedules directly represent this requirement. Add Jellyfin as the front end if you want its guide and recording features.
You have an antenna tuner or an existing IPTV provider
Jellyfin alone may be sufficient. Add the HDHomeRun or M3U tuner, configure XMLTV or Schedules Direct guide data, and use Jellyfin to watch and record the incoming channels. ErsatzTV is optional because the source is already live rather than a personal library that needs programming.

You want one Jellyfin interface for custom and real channels
Run both applications. Jellyfin can present ErsatzTV-generated channels alongside other Live TV sources, provided each tuner and guide feed is configured correctly.
You have a low-power server
Consider HLS Direct because it avoids transcoding, but validate the result with your intended clients and media. If transitions fail or you need watermarks, move to HLS Segmenter and plan for the additional processing load that transcoding requires.
You need media types beyond Movies and Shows
Plan around a Local library in ErsatzTV, because synchronized Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby libraries are documented for Movies and Shows. Check the resulting library contents before building schedules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshooting the common failure points
Jellyfin shows no channels
Verify that the M3U tuner was added as an M3U Tuner, that the feed address was copied from ErsatzTV, and that ErsatzTV is running and able to serve the playlist. Refresh the tuner configuration after correcting the address.
Channels appear but the guide is empty
Add ErsatzTV’s XMLTV feed under Add TV Guide Data, choose XMLTV, save it, and run a guide refresh. A playlist alone identifies channels but does not provide the program schedule Jellyfin needs for guide browsing and recording.
The guide has channels but incorrect or missing programs
Check that Jellyfin is using the XMLTV feed generated by the same ErsatzTV channel configuration as the M3U playlist. Mismatched feeds can produce channel entries without the expected program timeline.
Programs fail at the handoff
If you are using HLS Direct, test HLS Segmenter. ErsatzTV specifically documents HLS Segmenter as providing the best behavior at program boundaries, while warning that some clients can have issues with HLS Direct transitions.
The server struggles during playback
HLS Segmenter transcodes content, so its processing demand is higher than HLS Direct. Try HLS Direct if you do not need watermarks and your clients handle boundaries correctly. If direct playback is incompatible with a client or media format, return to HLS Segmenter and address the host’s transcoding capacity.
Expected media is missing from ErsatzTV
Confirm the library type. Synchronized Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby libraries cover Movies and Shows in the documented support. For additional local media kinds, create or use a Local library that points to the files ErsatzTV can access.
Final decision
For scheduled, custom linear television built from a personal media library, ErsatzTV is the stronger product because channel creation and playout are its central job. Jellyfin is the stronger standalone choice for consuming existing HDHomeRun or IPTV sources, browsing guide data, and recording live channels. The most capable arrangement for many home setups is not an either-or choice: let ErsatzTV generate the channels and schedules, then let Jellyfin consume the M3U and XMLTV feeds as its Live TV interface.
