Short answer: Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if clear calls and the strongest available noise isolation are your priorities. Choose the JBL Tour One M3 if you value much longer battery life or JBL Spatial 360 head-tracked audio. JBL’s Live 770NC is a lower-tier value option, not a direct flagship rival.
The Sony is lighter and has the stronger documented microphone and call-processing specification. The JBL lasts substantially longer between charges and supports an unusually broad set of codecs and spatial-audio features. Your best choice depends on whether your hardest problem is background noise, battery anxiety or the way you want music to sound.

Which has the better microphone for calls?
Sony has the stronger documented case for voice calls, especially when the environment is noisy. The WH-1000XM6 product materials specify 12 microphones, AI beamforming and the QN3 processor. Sony markets the result as “Crystal-clear calls,” which is a manufacturer claim rather than independent proof. Sony’s official product information is available on its WH-1000XM6 product page.
Sony WH-1000XM6 in quiet rooms
In a quiet office, either headset should be capable of understandable speech. Sony’s advantage is not simply the number of microphones: the microphones, beamforming and voice-focused processing are designed to separate your speech from surrounding sound before it reaches a call app. What Hi-Fi’s call roundup reported strong voice isolation in testing, providing independent support for Sony’s call position beyond the specification sheet.
Sony WH-1000XM6 in wind and street noise
For a pavement, station platform or open-plan office, beamforming and noise suppression matter more than a headline microphone count. Sony is the safer choice when callers regularly complain about traffic, nearby conversations or general room noise. Wind can still overwhelm any small headset microphone, and performance depends on how the earcups and microphones sit on your head.

JBL Tour One M3 calls
The Tour One M3 is a credible work headset rather than a token alternative. JBL specifies four adaptive beamforming microphones, echo reduction, ambient-noise reduction, VoiceAware sidetone control and Zoom certification. JBL describes its goal as making “every call or conference sound like a face-to-face conversation”; that sentence is JBL’s marketing claim, not a universal test result. The official details are on the JBL Tour One M3 product page and in the JBL specification sheet.
JBL’s VoiceAware control is useful if you want to hear more of your own voice during a call. Echo and ambient-noise reduction should help in ordinary rooms, but the available evidence does not establish that it matches Sony’s voice isolation in every noisy situation.

Teams, Zoom and phone-call reality
Zoom certification does not guarantee identical results in Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or a mobile dialler. The phone, computer Bluetooth stack, conferencing app, microphone permissions and network processing all affect the result. Before an important meeting:
- Choose the headset as both input and output in the conferencing app instead of leaving input on the laptop microphone.
- Run the app’s test call and listen for clipped words, pumping noise or excessive sidetone.
- Keep the microphone side unobstructed by hair, scarf or a high coat collar.
- In wind, turn away from the airflow and reduce movement; software cannot remove every gust.
If call intelligibility is the deciding factor and you cannot test both models, buy the Sony. If you mostly call from a quiet desk and want JBL’s other features, the Tour One M3 remains a sensible choice.
Which blocks airplane and commuting noise better?
Sony is the better default for maximum isolation. The WH-1000XM6 combines a 12-microphone system with Sony’s QN3 processing. The Tour One M3 uses eight microphones for adaptive ANC. Microphone count alone does not determine ANC quality, but Sony has the stronger independent and product-level evidence for difficult low-frequency environments such as aircraft cabins.
Airplanes
On a long flight, engine rumble is where effective ANC pays off most. The Sony is the safer recommendation when reducing cabin noise, preserving quiet passages in music and lowering the volume are more important than endurance. Its lower weight also matters after several hours.
Trains, buses and streets
Both models are designed for adaptive ANC and should reduce steady background sound. Sudden voices, braking squeals and irregular clatter are harder for any ANC headset. Use the companion app’s ambient or transparency controls when you need announcements or traffic awareness rather than leaving maximum cancellation enabled continuously.

Isolation is not the same as safety
ANC does not make you aware of approaching vehicles, alarms or public-address announcements. Switch to an aware or ambient mode before crossing roads, cycling, working around machinery or waiting for a gate call. Do not rely on either headset as hearing protection.

JBL wins decisively on rated battery life. The Tour One M3 is rated for up to 40 hours of music with ANC enabled and up to 70 hours with ANC disabled. Sony rates the WH-1000XM6 for up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours off. The figures come from the manufacturers and represent playback conditions, not a guaranteed number of hours for calls or maximum-volume listening.
| Travel question | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several long flights between charging opportunities | JBL Tour One M3 | Its rated ANC-on endurance is 10 hours higher than Sony’s, with a much larger advantage when ANC is disabled. |
| Lowest weight for all-day wear | Sony WH-1000XM6 | At about 254 g, it is roughly 24 g lighter than the 278 g JBL. |
| Independent ANC-on battery context | Sony WH-1000XM6 | RTINGS measured 31.75 hours with ANC enabled, although test methods are not directly interchangeable with JBL’s manufacturer rating. |
| Quick access to a wired source | Sony WH-1000XM6 | Sony’s official specifications list a 3.5 mm input. |
The RTINGS result is a laboratory-style independent measurement, while the 30-hour Sony figure and JBL figures are official ratings. Do not treat those numbers as an apples-to-apples contest: volume, codec, firmware and test procedures differ.
Weight, folding and carrying on a trip
The Sony’s approximately 254 g chassis is 24 g lighter than the 278 g Tour One M3. That difference is modest in a backpack but noticeable when the headphones remain on your head for an overnight flight or a full workday. Weight distribution and clamp force can matter as much as the scale number, so a return policy is valuable if you are sensitive to pressure.
Sony’s specifications list both a 3.5 mm input and an included carrying case, useful for seat-back entertainment systems and protection in a bag. The cited JBL materials do not establish an equivalent case or folding specification, so check the exact regional package contents before travelling; accessories can vary by market and bundle.

Music: Sony’s controlled processing or JBL’s spatial presentation?
There is no objective “best sound” winner here. The two brands emphasize different listening experiences, and your preference for a direct stereo presentation or an enveloping stage should drive the decision.
Sony WH-1000XM6 for detailed, controlled listening
Sony documents LDAC support, DSEE Extreme processing, multipoint and extensive controls through its headphone software. LDAC can carry higher-bitrate Bluetooth audio when the source device and connection conditions support it. DSEE Extreme is Sony’s processing approach for restoring or enhancing detail in compressed material; it is not a replacement for a lossless source.
The Sony is the safer musical choice if you want strong isolation, a focused presentation and the ability to tune the experience in the app. “Detailed” and “controlled” are listening descriptions, not laboratory measurements, and different ears may prefer another tonal balance.
JBL Tour One M3 for Spatial 360 and codec flexibility
JBL adds Spatial 360 with head tracking. As you turn your head, the virtual presentation is intended to remain anchored, creating a more enveloping or cinematic effect for compatible content and personal listening. Some people love that sense of space; others prefer conventional stereo because spatial processing can make music feel less direct.

LC3 is relevant to newer Bluetooth LE Audio ecosystems, but the benefit depends on the source device and software support. LDAC support gives Android listeners a high-bitrate option when conditions allow it. JBL’s long battery rating makes it attractive to listeners who use spatial features frequently and do not want to recharge every day.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

How to choose by music habit
- Acoustic, classical and detail-focused listening: start with Sony’s conventional presentation and app tuning.
- Films, games and immersive playlists: audition JBL Spatial 360 and head tracking; keep a normal stereo mode available for tracks that sound better without processing.
- Mixed phones and laptops: both offer multipoint, but codec selection can change when two devices are connected.
- High-resolution Bluetooth: LDAC appears on both documented feature sets; the source phone, connection stability and app output still determine whether it is used.
Multipoint, codecs and daily switching
Both headphones support Bluetooth 5.3 and multipoint, allowing two paired devices to remain connected. That is useful when moving between a laptop and a phone, but multipoint is not the same as seamless switching in every app. A music stream may need to pause before an incoming call takes over, and some high-bitrate modes can be restricted when multipoint is active.
Sony’s published specifications identify LDAC support. JBL’s published list is broader: SBC, AAC, LC3 and LDAC. Codec support does not automatically improve sound; the operating system, source service and connection quality decide which codec is negotiated. If a phone falls back to SBC for stability, that is normal behaviour rather than a hardware fault.
App controls and sound customisation
Sony’s documented app ecosystem provides extensive controls alongside DSEE Extreme, multipoint and noise-control settings. This suits listeners who want to adjust equalisation, ambient sound and processing rather than accept one fixed tuning.

JBL’s Tour One M3 feature set centres on Spatial 360, head tracking, VoiceAware and adaptive noise control. Use Spatial 360 selectively: head-tracked audio can be engaging for a film or live recording but may make a familiar stereo mix sound artificial. VoiceAware is helpful when you need to monitor your own speech without removing the headset.
Where JBL Live 770NC fits
The JBL Live 770NC is a value reference, not an equal competitor to either flagship. JBL rates it for up to 65 hours of total playback or up to 50 hours with Bluetooth and ANC enabled. It also has multipoint and a built-in microphone. See the JBL Live 770NC product page for the listed features.
Choose Live 770NC when long battery life and a lower expected price matter more than the Tour One M3’s Spatial 360, broader documented codec list and premium call/ANC hardware. The available specifications do not establish that Live 770NC matches Sony’s call isolation or the Tour One M3’s adaptive microphone system, so do not buy it expecting flagship-level microphone performance.
Decision guide: which one should you buy?
Buy Sony WH-1000XM6 if you:
- Take calls in streets, stations, cafés or open offices.
- Want the strongest documented case for voice isolation and noise cancelling.
- Fly often and prefer a lighter headset for long wear.
- Value Sony’s DSEE Extreme, LDAC and extensive app controls.
- Need a documented 3.5 mm input and included carrying case.
Buy JBL Tour One M3 if you:
- Need the longest practical interval between charges.
- Want JBL Spatial 360 with head tracking for an enveloping presentation.
- Want SBC, AAC, LC3 and LDAC listed in the specification.
- Mostly call from reasonably quiet spaces but still want beamforming, VoiceAware and Zoom certification.
- Prefer JBL’s feature approach and are willing to accept the additional weight.
Choose JBL Live 770NC if you:
- Want a lower-tier JBL over-ear model with long rated battery life.
- Need multipoint and a built-in microphone without paying for Tour One M3 features.
- Do not require the strongest documented ANC or call isolation in this comparison.
Before you buy: check these practical details
- Confirm the regional listing. Battery ratings and included accessories can be presented differently by market. Sony’s official specification page is here; verify the exact JBL regional page and package contents.
- Check your phone’s codec support. LDAC and LC3 require compatible source hardware and software. An iPhone, Android phone and laptop may negotiate different codecs.
- Plan for multipoint limits. If you use LDAC or spatial processing, test switching between your laptop and phone before relying on it during work.
- Test comfort with your actual glasses or hairstyle. The 24 g weight difference favours Sony, but pad shape and clamp determine individual comfort.
- Check current price and stock on the day you order. Regional pricing, promotions, firmware and availability change; no current price is established by the specifications above.
Final recommendation
For the question “Which is better for calls, music and travel?” the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the best all-round recommendation because calls and difficult noise are the areas where its documented hardware and independent call evidence are strongest, while its lower weight helps on long journeys. The JBL Tour One M3 is the better specialist choice when 40-hour ANC-on endurance, 70-hour ANC-off endurance and Spatial 360 matter more than absolute call performance or weight. The JBL Live 770NC makes sense only when its value positioning and long battery are the main objectives.
