The companion app for the JBL Link Portable is the Google Home app. JBL’s product page says the speaker is set up and managed with it, and the Quick Start Guide tells you to download it. There is no separate JBL-branded app in JBL’s own materials for this model. This guide covers what the app is for, what you need before setup, what to do if the speaker doesn’t appear, and which features belong to the speaker rather than the app.
Which app does the JBL Link Portable use?
JBL’s product page says: “Easily set up and manage the JBL Link with the free Google Home App for iOS and Android.” The Quick Start Guide repeats the instruction: “Download the Google Home app and set up your Link Portable.” JBL’s published material documents the app’s role as setup and management. It does not list every current screen or control, so this article doesn’t either. Menus change as Google updates the app.

What belongs to the app and what belongs to the speaker
Much of what makes the Link Portable useful is hardware or built-in behavior, not something the app unlocks. Keeping the two apart helps you decide where to look when something goes wrong.

What you need before setup
JBL’s support checklist asks for the following:
- A supported iOS or Android phone or tablet. JBL says setup from a PC is not supported.
- The latest Google Home app.
- A Google Account.
- Internet service and a Wi-Fi network secured with WPA2. JBL says Enterprise mode is not supported.
The same support page names iOS 10 and Android 5.0 as minimum operating systems. Those figures are legacy wording and may not match Google Home’s current requirements, so check the Google Home listing in the App Store or Google Play for what your device needs today.
Setting up the speaker
- Charge the speaker using the cradle or USB-C cable, then power it on.
- Install Google Home on your phone or tablet and sign in with your Google Account.
- Keep the speaker close to your router. Look for blinking white LEDs, which JBL says indicate the speaker is ready to be found.
- Follow the in-app prompts to add the speaker and join your WPA2 Wi-Fi network. Exact prompts vary by app version.
If the speaker doesn’t appear in Google Home
JBL’s discovery troubleshooting suggests working through these in order:
Rank #2
- Wireless Bluetooth streaming
- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Premium JBL sound quality
- Power and distance: confirm the speaker is on and near the router, with white LEDs blinking.
- iPhone or iPad: turn Bluetooth on.
- Android: turn on Location services, and allow the Google Home app’s Location permission.
- Restart: reboot the speaker, then force-close and reopen the app.
- Ignored Devices: check whether the speaker was placed under “Ignored Devices.” That is JBL’s wording, so if your app’s menus differ, look in the current Google Home settings.
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for everyday listening?
Google Home is the setup and management step. Day-to-day playback can then use Wi-Fi streaming or a Bluetooth connection, both of which JBL lists for the speaker. JBL’s materials don’t compare the two modes in detail. Treat Wi-Fi as the route configured through Google Home, and Bluetooth as the direct phone-to-speaker option that doesn’t depend on your router.
