There is no single “best VPN” for a 3D printer, because a typical consumer VPN subscription does not do the job printer owners want. The goal is to reach your printer’s interface, such as OctoPrint, from outside your home without exposing it to the internet. That needs a route into your home network. A subscription that only routes your traffic out through a provider’s servers doesn’t provide one.
This guide explains which kinds of setup can do the job and how to tell them apart. It also covers what to check before you spend money. We haven’t tested individual products, and we don’t name a winning router or provider, because that would go beyond the evidence available.

Why OctoPrint’s own guidance points to a VPN
OctoPrint’s access-control documentation is blunt. It says: “If you plan to have your OctoPrint instance accessible over the internet, please use additional security measures and ideally don’t make it accessible to everyone over the internet but instead use a VPN or at the very least HTTP basic authentication on a layer above OctoPrint.” It also says: “A physical device that includes heaters and stepper motors really should not be publicly reachable by everyone with an internet connection, even with access control enabled.” Both quotes come from the project documentation, not a named individual. (OctoPrint access-control documentation)
The practical reading: a login page is not enough on its own. A printer that can heat a nozzle to hundreds of degrees and move motors should be reachable only by people you have chosen.

The webcam is a separate exposure
OctoPrint states that it does not control the webcam it embeds. Someone who guesses the camera stream’s URL may be able to watch it, regardless of your OctoPrint login settings. A VPN-style approach helps here because the camera sits behind the same private route as the printer interface. If you instead publish OctoPrint through a port forward, treat the camera stream as exposed too. (source)
The same page notes that anonymous users have no permissions by default. It also describes user groups and warns about the autologin feature, so check that autologin isn’t giving an unauthenticated visitor access.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
“VPN” means three different things
A consumer VPN subscription
Commercial VPN apps are built to encrypt your outbound traffic and change your apparent location. They don’t usually offer a way to connect from your phone back to a device on your home LAN. Don’t buy one expecting it to make a LAN-only printer reachable.
A router with a VPN client
Installing a VPN on a router extends a provider’s VPN to every device on the network, as TechRadar’s category description explains (TechRadar VPN-router guide). That is still the outbound direction. A router described only as supporting a VPN client does not prove you can connect from outside back to the printer.

A VPN server, mesh or overlay network
This is what you actually need: a VPN server running on your router or a home device, or a mesh or overlay network that links your phone or laptop to the network where the printer lives. Check that the product lists inbound remote access or a server role explicitly, and that it has client apps for the devices you will use away from home.
Hosted remote access as an alternative
If running your own VPN sounds like too much, OctoPrint’s plugin repository maintains a Remote Access topic. It lists cloud services, including Obico, that are described as giving access without port forwarding or direct public exposure. The listings mention remote access, streaming, notifications and mobile-app support. These are service claims on a plugin listing, not an independent security audit or an endorsement, and performance on your printer isn’t verified. (OctoPrint Remote Access topic)

Self-managed VPN vs hosted access
| Question | Self-managed VPN (server, mesh or overlay) | Hosted remote-access service |
|---|---|---|
| Route into the home network | Yes, you control it | Provided by the service’s plugin or relay |
| Avoids port forwarding | Depends on the product; check before buying | Listed as a goal of the plugins in the repository |
| Who sees your traffic | You, plus any coordination service the product uses | The provider, as part of its design |
| Setup effort | Higher: server, keys, client apps | Typically lower: install a plugin and link an account |
| Recurring cost | Not stated; varies by product | Not stated; check each service’s current plans |
Checklist before you choose
- Can it create a secure route from your remote device into the home LAN?
- Does it avoid forwarding OctoPrint’s port or exposing it publicly?
- Does it support the operating system, printer software and interface you use?
- Does it cover both controls and the webcam, or does the camera need its own privacy configuration?
- What are the account, maintenance and recurring-cost requirements?
- Can you limit access to trusted devices and people?
If you shop for a router
“VPN router with remote access server” is a better search phrase than “VPN router”. Confirm in the manufacturer’s documentation that the model can act as a server for incoming connections, and that your phone or laptop has a compatible client. We haven’t verified any specific model’s inbound capability, so none is recommended here.

- Don’t leave OctoPrint on a forwarded port with only its login as protection.
- If a VPN truly isn’t possible, OctoPrint’s documented minimum is HTTP basic authentication on a layer above OctoPrint. It is a fallback, not a replacement.
- Don’t assume a camera stream is protected because the OctoPrint interface is.
The Bottom Line
Skip shopping by brand. Look for a setup that gives you inbound access to your home network, whether a VPN server, a mesh or overlay network, or a reputable hosted plugin, and keep both the printer interface and the webcam behind it.
