For a production-accurate token count in JavaScript, use the provider’s own counting operation with the exact model and request shape you will send. OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude) and Gemini expose model-aware counting APIs; Cohere provides a tokenize operation; Mistral requires the tokenizer that matches the selected model. Local tokenizers are useful for fast offline estimates, but they can disagree with billed or context-window usage when messages, tools, schemas, files or media add formatting tokens.
Why a token count is not just a character calculation
A token is a unit produced by a particular model tokenizer. It may represent a whole word, part of a word, punctuation, whitespace or a control marker. The same text can therefore produce different counts for different model families. Even two requests containing identical visible text can have different totals if one includes a system instruction, chat-history turns, tool definitions, a JSON schema, an image or another wrapper.

That is why a JavaScript function that divides character length by a constant is unsuitable for enforcing a context limit or predicting provider usage. Google gives a rough explanatory heuristic of about four characters per Gemini token, and describes 60–80 English words as roughly 100 tokens. Those figures are orientation only, not a provider-independent conversion. Code that must fit a context window should count the complete request using the deployed model.

Tokenizer behavior can change between model families.
- Request coupling: count the same roles, history, content parts, tools and settings that the production call contains.
- Representation coupling: a provider may count serialization and formatting tokens that are invisible in a plain string.
- Timing and privacy: a native count call usually needs a network round trip and sends the input to that provider; a local tokenizer is faster and can work offline, but may be an estimate.
Use native counting for a final preflight check, then reserve a small application margin for changes made between counting and sending. Never silently replace a provider result with a local estimate when a request contains tools, schemas, files, images or audio.

OpenAI: count Responses input tokens
OpenAI’s input-token counting endpoint accepts the same input format as the Responses API. That makes it suitable for checking a request before creating the response, including the structure that OpenAI will process rather than only the visible text.
JavaScript example
import OpenAI from "openai";
const client = new OpenAI({ apiKey: process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY });
const response = await client.responses.inputTokens.count({
model: "MODEL_ID",
input: "Tell me a joke."
});
console.log(response.input_tokens);
Replace MODEL_ID with the model used by the real Responses request. The returned input_tokens value is the number to use for that preflight check. If production sends an array of role/content items, instructions, images, tools or other Responses fields, pass that same structure to input rather than reducing it to a text excerpt.
Counting a structured request
const request = {
model: "MODEL_ID",
input: [
{
role: "user",
content: [
{ type: "input_text", text: "Summarize this report." }
]
}
],
tools: [
{
type: "function",
name: "lookup_order",
description: "Find an order by its identifier.",
parameters: {
type: "object",
properties: { order_id: { type: "string" } },
required: ["order_id"]
}
}
]
};
const counted = await client.responses.inputTokens.count({
model: request.model,
input: request.input,
tools: request.tools
});
console.log(counted.input_tokens);
The important principle is not the particular example, but parity: construct one request object and use its relevant fields for both counting and generation. Formatting tokens created by the request structure are part of the endpoint’s purpose, so a local tokenizer over only "Summarize this report." can be lower than the provider’s result.
Anthropic: use the model-specific Messages counter
Claude requests are counted through Anthropic’s Messages API counter. Anthropic states that the count is model-specific. OpenAI’s tiktoken tokenizer is therefore not an exact Claude counter, even when the text is identical.
JavaScript example
import Anthropic from "@anthropic-ai/sdk";
const anthropic = new Anthropic({
apiKey: process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY
});
const result = await anthropic.messages.countTokens({
model: "MODEL_ID",
messages: [
{ role: "user", content: "Hello" }
]
});
console.log(result.input_tokens);
Use the exact Claude model ID and the same messages array that will be sent to messages.create. If your application keeps a conversation, include every retained turn. If content is represented as blocks rather than a plain string, count those blocks in the same shape.

Why a cross-provider tokenizer fails here
A tokenizer library designed for another provider may produce a plausible-looking integer while using different vocabulary and special-token rules. That number can be useful for rough trend measurements, but it is not a safe limit check for Claude. The native counter is the authoritative preflight value for the selected model and message representation.
Gemini: count complete Content, including multimodal parts
Google’s Node.js SDK exposes ai.models.countTokens. It runs the selected model’s tokenizer on input Content and returns totalTokens. Google documents counting for text, chat history, images, video, PDFs, cached content, system instructions and tools, so a plain prompt count is incomplete whenever the actual request contains any of those elements.

const response = await ai.models.countTokens({
model: "gemini-MODEL_ID",
contents: "Tell me a joke."
});
console.log(response.totalTokens);
The model name must match the model used for generation. For a multi-turn request, pass the complete contents array, not only the newest message:
const contents = [
{ role: "user", parts: [{ text: "What is a token?" }] },
{ role: "model", parts: [{ text: "It is a model-specific text unit." }] },
{ role: "user", parts: [{ text: "Why does the count change?" }] }
];
const result = await ai.models.countTokens({
model: "gemini-MODEL_ID",
contents
});
console.log(result.totalTokens);
Multimodal and tool requests
When production includes an image, video, PDF, cached context, system instruction or tool declaration, include that same content in the counting call. A local JavaScript tokenizer cannot infer the provider’s accounting for binary media or tool metadata. Count after assembling all content parts and before submitting the generation request.
Mistral: load the tokenizer that belongs to the model
Mistral’s official guidance points developers to mistral-common for manual tokenization and explicitly notes that Mistral models use a different tokenizer than Llama. A Llama tokenizer, a generic BPE package or an OpenAI tokenizer is therefore not an exact substitute.

Manual tokenization
The JavaScript application can invoke the language or service that provides the matching mistral-common tokenizer, or place tokenization behind a small internal service. The implementation must select the tokenizer associated with the exact deployed Mistral model and preserve the same chat template used in the API request. Document that result as a local estimate unless the final provider response supplies usage for the completed request.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Mistral’s API requires the prompt tokens plus max_tokens to fit the model’s context window. A preflight check should therefore compare both quantities:
const promptTokens = await countWithMatchingMistralTokenizer(request);
const requestedOutput = request.max_tokens;
if (promptTokens + requestedOutput > contextWindow) {
throw new Error("Prompt plus max_tokens exceeds the model context window");
}
The tokenizer input must include the serialized conversation and any tool descriptions. Tool definitions consume tokens even though the user never sees them as ordinary prose. If the SDK or server applies a chat template, count the templated form rather than an unformatted concatenation.
Cohere: call the tokenize operation with text and model
Cohere provides a REST tokenize operation that takes both the text and the model. The model parameter matters because tokenization is tied to the model version. The current SDK method name and response field should be checked against the SDK and model version you deploy; do not hard-code an example from an older client without verifying it.
Integration shape
// Illustrative adapter shape; use the current Cohere SDK or REST schema
// for your deployed version and read its documented response field.
async function countCohere({ model, text }) {
const result = await cohereTokenize({ model, text });
return result.tokenCount;
}
Keep the adapter’s public return value numeric, but map the provider’s actual field at the boundary. If the API returns token IDs as well as a count, calculate the length from the documented field only when the current reference specifies that representation. Treat an unverified field name as an integration error, not as a zero-token result.

A provider adapter that keeps application code consistent
Applications often need one function for limits, logging and user-facing estimates even though each provider has a different request format. Define a common interface and isolate provider-specific calls in adapters.
/**
* Return the provider's input-token count for the exact request.
* Native counters are authoritative preflight checks; local Mistral
* tokenization is marked as an estimate by the caller.
*/
export async function countInput({ provider, model, request }) {
switch (provider) {
case "openai": {
const result = await openai.responses.inputTokens.count({
model,
input: request.input,
tools: request.tools
});
return { tokens: result.input_tokens, exact: true };
}
case "anthropic": {
const result = await anthropic.messages.countTokens({
model,
messages: request.messages
});
return { tokens: result.input_tokens, exact: true };
}
case "gemini": {
const result = await gemini.models.countTokens({
model,
contents: request.contents
});
return { tokens: result.totalTokens, exact: true };
}
case "cohere": {
const result = await countCohere({ model, text: request.text });
return { tokens: result, exact: true };
}
case "mistral": {
const tokens = await countWithMatchingMistralTokenizer({
model,
request
});
return { tokens, exact: false };
}
default:
throw new Error(`Unsupported provider: ${provider}`);
}
}
The field names in this example are normalized at the adapter boundary. Your OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini request objects should contain the complete structures described above. The Cohere and Mistral helper functions deliberately remain provider-specific because their current client and tokenizer interfaces must be selected for the versions you install.
Exactness, latency and maintenance trade-offs
| Approach | Exactness | Wrappers, tools and media | Network and privacy | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Responses input counter | Provider-native for the selected model and input format | Counts the Responses input structure; include tools and other fields used in production | Requires an OpenAI request; input leaves the local process | Low in application code; model IDs and SDK versions still need monitoring |
| Anthropic Messages counter | Provider-native and model-specific | Count the complete Messages array and content blocks | Requires an Anthropic request | Low after SDK setup; do not substitute an OpenAI tokenizer |
Gemini countTokens |
Provider-native for the chosen Gemini model | Supports documented Content forms such as history, media, cache, system instructions and tools when supplied | Requires a Google request | Low; keep model and Content schemas current |
Cohere tokenize |
Provider-native when text and model are passed to the current operation | Count the text representation accepted by the operation; verify how your deployed API represents richer requests | Requires a Cohere request | Verify the current SDK method and response field on upgrades |
| Matching local tokenizer | Useful estimate; exact only when it reproduces the provider’s deployed serialization and vocabulary | Usually misses provider-added wrappers, tools, schemas and media unless you implement them | Offline and low latency; data stays local | Highest: tokenizer files, chat templates and model versions must be maintained |
A reliable preflight workflow
- Choose the deployment model first. Store the exact provider and model ID in configuration, alongside the context-window limit and output-token allowance.
- Build the final request object. Add system instructions, retained history, user content, tool declarations, schemas, cached material and media before counting.
- Call the provider-native counter. Use OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini’s native operation, or Cohere’s current tokenize operation. For Mistral, use the exact matching tokenizer and mark the result as an estimate unless the provider gives authoritative usage.
- Validate input plus requested output. For Mistral this is explicitly prompt tokens plus
max_tokens; apply the same combined check to other providers when enforcing a context limit. - Apply a margin for mutable requests. If middleware can add instructions or tools after counting, count again after that middleware runs. A margin is not a replacement for recounting a changed request.
- Send the identical structure. Do not serialize one object for counting and a different object for generation. Log the model, provider, count source and request version for debugging, while avoiding sensitive prompt logging.
- Compare final usage when available. Provider-reported usage from the completed request is the operational record for billing and future calibration. Investigate systematic differences instead of averaging them away.
Common disagreement scenarios and fixes
Only the latest user message was counted
Chat APIs receive the retained conversation, not just the newest sentence. Pass the entire history in the provider’s message or content format. If you intentionally trim history, perform the trim before counting and send that same trimmed array.
Tools or JSON schemas were omitted
Tool names, descriptions, parameter schemas and other declarations consume input tokens. Include them in OpenAI and Gemini counting requests, and in the serialized Mistral prompt. A text-only estimate will undercount a tool-heavy request.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA local tokenizer was for the wrong model family
OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Mistral and Cohere do not share one universal vocabulary. Replace the tokenizer with the model-matched implementation, or use the native counter. In particular, Mistral’s documentation distinguishes its tokenizer from Llama’s, and Anthropic warns that OpenAI’s tiktoken is not an exact Claude counter.

Multimodal content was reduced to a caption
An image, video or PDF can have provider-specific accounting that is not represented by its filename or a generated caption. Gemini’s counter accepts documented multimodal Content; send those same parts. For other providers, follow the deployed API’s native counting support rather than inventing a text conversion.
The model changed between count and generation
Token counts are model-specific. Keep the model ID in the same immutable request configuration used by both operations. A fallback model selected after counting requires a new count.
The SDK response field is undefined
Check the installed SDK version and the provider’s current reference. OpenAI returns input_tokens, Anthropic returns input_tokens, and Gemini returns totalTokens in the documented examples above. Cohere’s current tokenize response must be mapped according to the version you deploy; fail loudly if the expected field is absent.
Recommended Free Tools
The count call times out
A native counter adds latency and can fail independently of generation. Set a bounded timeout, retry only according to the provider’s guidance, and choose a documented fallback policy. For hard context enforcement, reject or trim rather than trusting a character heuristic. For a non-critical preview, display a clearly labeled local estimate and recount before sending.
Designing for cost and context limits
Token counting serves two related but different jobs. A context preflight asks whether the request can fit. Usage accounting asks what the provider actually processed for billing and telemetry. Use the native count for the former and the completed response’s usage data for the latter whenever it is available.
Keep counts associated with a request ID, provider, model ID, counting method and timestamp. Do not assume that a count from one model can be reused after a model upgrade. Cache counts only when the full request payload, model and tokenizer version are unchanged; caching a count for a prompt while silently changing tools or system instructions creates a false result.
For offline or high-throughput interfaces, a matching local tokenizer can provide an immediate estimate while the server performs the authoritative preflight. Label the two values separately, and never let the estimate override a provider response. This split gives users responsive feedback without weakening the final context check.

Minimal decision guide
- OpenAI Responses: call
client.responses.inputTokens.countwith the production model and input. - Claude: call
anthropic.messages.countTokenswith the model and complete Messages array. - Gemini: call
ai.models.countTokenswith the model and complete Content, including multimodal parts and tools when present. - Mistral: use the tokenizer matching the exact model, account for tool descriptions and
max_tokens, and treat local results as estimates unless final usage is returned. - Cohere: call the current
tokenizeoperation with both text and model, then map the response field documented for your deployed SDK or API version.
The portable JavaScript abstraction is a provider adapter, not a universal tokenizer. Keep provider-native counting at the boundary, pass the complete request, and make model changes trigger a fresh count.
