JavaScript Grid Cell Editing with Node and DynamoDB: From Edit to Save

A cell edit is only a proposed change. Learn how the grid, Node.js application, and DynamoDB divide responsibility for saving it.

To edit a grid cell and save it to DynamoDB, enable editing for the column, send the edited item’s key and change from the browser to your Node.js application, and have the server update the matching DynamoDB item. The grid’s editor closing is not proof that the database write succeeded: the application must decide when to display the new value and how to report a failed save.

The specific grid package, Node route, request format, validation rules, and AWS SDK version used by the original tutorial are not established here. AG Grid provides a documented example of the grid-side choices, while AWS’s examples show the database update pattern.

How does in-place editing work?

Editing a cell spans three separate responsibilities: the grid collects a value, the application decides whether to accept and persist it, and DynamoDB applies a change to a keyed item. Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a visual edit from being mistaken for a saved record.

  • Grid: permits editing in the relevant column and reports the user’s proposed value.
  • Application: identifies the record, validates the change, and sends an update request to the server.
  • Server and DynamoDB: use the item key to apply the requested attribute change, then return an outcome the application can use to update the display.

Enable editing for the relevant column

In AG Grid, a column can be made editable with its editable property. That property can be a boolean or a callback, so editing may be allowed only for rows or conditions that meet the application’s rules. See AG Grid’s cell-editing documentation.

Enabling the editor only permits a user to propose a value. It does not, by itself, define whether the browser or the server owns the updated record.

Choose who owns the changed row data

Grid-owned updates

In the ordinary editing model, the grid can write the new value into its row data. This can be a straightforward choice when the browser is the state owner. If the change also needs a server-side write, application code still has to persist it and handle a failed request; a changed row in browser memory is not evidence that DynamoDB changed.

Application-owned updates with Read Only Edit

AG Grid’s Read Only Edit mode leaves the data update to application code and emits a cellEditRequest event after an edit is completed. As AG Grid puts it, “Read Only Edit stops the grid from updating data, and relies on the application to make the update after the edit is complete.” This pattern is useful when the application must validate and persist a change outside the grid. See AG Grid’s saving-values documentation.

The trade-off is control versus convenience: grid-owned mutation is simpler for browser-owned state, while application-owned updates make the persistence decision explicit. The exact tutorial implementation’s choice is not established.

Handle the edit request in the application

For an application-owned save, the browser-side handler should send enough information for the server to identify both the item and the requested change. In practical terms, that usually means an item key and the attribute value being edited. The server should validate the request before attempting the write.

The exact endpoint, request and response shapes, and validation policy are not established for this tutorial, so they should not be inferred. In particular, do not treat a closed cell editor as a successful save: the browser needs to know whether the server accepted the request.

Update the item in DynamoDB by key

A DynamoDB update targets an item by its key and uses an update expression to describe which attribute or attributes to change. AWS’s introductory example also shows how to return updated attributes. See AWS’s DynamoDB update example.

The key matters because it identifies the record independently of its visible row position. A server should not rely on a grid row index as the database identity: sorting, filtering, or inserting rows can change positions without changing item keys.

AWS’s Node.js DocumentClient example is specifically an AWS SDK for JavaScript v2 guide. Its syntax should not be presented as SDK v3 code. If adapting an example, confirm which SDK generation the project uses and follow that generation’s API. See AWS SDK for JavaScript v2’s DocumentClient example.

Keep the displayed value consistent with the save result

The application must choose how the visible row behaves while the server processes an update. An optimistic display applies the proposed value immediately and must restore or otherwise correct the row if the write fails. A confirmed display waits for a successful response before showing the value as saved. The reviewed references do not establish which approach the original tutorial uses.

Whichever approach is used, communicate failure and keep the grid’s data consistent with the server outcome. A grid event reports editing activity, not a guaranteed database commit.

Distinguish grid edit events

AG Grid’s cellEditRequest and cellValueChanged serve different roles. cellEditRequest fires in Read Only Edit mode, where application code takes responsibility for changing the data. cellValueChanged is associated with ordinary editing and other grid actions; AG Grid documents cases where it does not fire, including when the value is unchanged or an edit is cancelled. See AG Grid’s saving-values documentation.

Choose the event that matches the grid’s data-ownership model. Do not assume that the two events are interchangeable or that either one confirms a server write.
