A Raspberry Pi smart display is easier to customize if you want to choose the software and build a new interface. You control its operating system, browser, and screen content, but must configure the Pi and assemble compatible hardware. For simple clock changes, the Echo Spot’s supported settings are easier. The more ambitious Echo modification path documented by the community applies to the 2017 first-generation model—not the 2024 Echo Spot—and is more technical than setting up a Pi kiosk.
What “customize” means for each device
These options offer different levels of control, and “jailbroken Echo Spot” should not be treated as a standard feature or a label for every generation.

- Supported Echo Spot personalization: Amazon documents clock-face and color-theme choices, 12- or 24-hour clock format, and night mode for the 2024 Echo Spot. These are the simplest changes, but they remain within the device’s supported features. Amazon’s Echo Spot (2024 release) help page.
- Community modification of the 2017 Echo Spot: community documentation describes unlocking the first-generation model, identified as
rook, and installing recovery or custom software. It specifies Fire OS prerequisites. This is a model- and firmware-dependent project, not an ordinary setting or an official Amazon process. The community setup guide. - Raspberry Pi kiosk: Raspberry Pi’s tutorial explains how to start a browser or application in full-screen kiosk mode. You choose the page or software and provide the compatible Pi, display, and supporting parts. Raspberry Pi’s kiosk guide.
So the practical comparison is between bounded, easy personalization on an Echo Spot, a technical modification for one older Echo model, and a configurable Pi build that requires setup and hardware.
Which option fits your goal?
| Goal | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Change the bedside clock’s appearance | Echo Spot settings | Clock faces, color themes, clock format, and night mode are documented settings for the 2024 release. Amazon support. |
| Show a custom webpage or dashboard | Raspberry Pi kiosk | The kiosk tutorial demonstrates launching a browser or application full-screen, with the builder choosing the display content. Raspberry Pi guide. |
| Repurpose a 2017 Echo Spot you already own | Community modification, if the exact model and firmware qualify | The documented unlock and custom-software workflow is specific to the first-generation Spot. Check its prerequisites before attempting it. Community setup documentation; project page. |
| Customize a 2024 Echo Spot beyond its built-in options | Pi, if you need a freely chosen interface | The sources establish supported personalization for the 2024 Spot, but do not establish a jailbreak path for that release. Do not apply the 2017 guide to it. Amazon support; community guide. |
What a Raspberry Pi kiosk requires
For the browser-based method in its tutorial, Raspberry Pi lists a Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM. That is the stated minimum for this tutorial’s approach, not a universal minimum for every smart-display project. The listed supplies include:
#1 Best Overall
- 7 inches, 800x480 pixels, IPS type, wide viewing angle, capacitive touchscreen, enjoy smooth touch response and excellent clarity for all your Raspberry Pi projects.
- Specially designed, simply connect to your raspberry pi's MIPI DSI interface. (No additional connections required.)
- Fully Compatible with Raspberry Pi 5/ 4B / 3B+ / 3B / 3A+ / 2B. (No HDMI port, not compatible with any other device.)
- Supports for Raspbian OS 2 points to zoom the page(old version), for Ubuntu/Kali/Win10 IoT (single-touch only). Support backlight brightness adjustment.
- Easy to use, no configuration required, plug and play (for new and configuration unchanged raspberry pi systems). Instructions was provided.
- A Raspberry Pi and suitable power supply
- A microSD card
- A display cable and monitor
The builder also chooses the screen and configures the operating system and kiosk content. A search phrase such as Raspberry Pi touchscreen display kit can help find relevant parts, but verify the board and screen’s interfaces, enclosure fit, and power compatibility before buying; the tutorial does not endorse a particular kit or establish a current price. Raspberry Pi kiosk guide.
What to check before attempting the Echo Spot modification
The community instructions concern the 2017 first-generation Echo Spot, codename rook. They specify supported Fire OS versions and describe using the micro-USB port beneath the back cover. Confirm the model and firmware against the current guide rather than assuming that an Echo Spot of another generation is compatible. A data-capable cable may be relevant to that procedure, but a cable alone does not establish compatibility or make the modification safe. Community setup guide.

For changing only the look of a bedside clock, use the Echo Spot’s built-in settings. For a custom dashboard or control over the page and software, a Raspberry Pi kiosk is the more direct route, though it involves choosing and configuring hardware. The 2017 Echo Spot modification is the most specialized option: it offers a way to experiment with a specific older device, but requires checking model and firmware prerequisites. These are reasoned comparisons of documented setup paths, not results from a head-to-head hands-on test.
