Atlassian Migration FAQ: Data Center Deadlines, Licensing, Backups, and Rollback

Atlassian Server support ended in 2024. For impacted Data Center products, sales restrictions lead to end of life on March 28, 2029; learn what renewals, backups, and rollback mean.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use an Atlassian Server product, its support ended on February 15, 2024 PT. If you use an impacted Data Center product, the key end-of-life date is March 28, 2029 at 23:59 PST; sales restrictions began earlier and renewals cannot extend past that date. Bitbucket Data Center and Jira Align Data Center are exceptions to the announced Data Center end of life. Before a production migration, test the move, preserve the source and any populated Cloud destination, and write down a product-specific recovery plan.

Which Atlassian deadline applies to my product?

Server and Data Center have separate lifecycle schedules. Atlassian says support and bug fixes for Server products ended on February 15, 2024 PT. Its Server FAQ recommends moving to Cloud or upgrading to Data Center for continued support, and offers eligible Server customers with expired maintenance a free 60-day Cloud Migration Trial.

For impacted Data Center products, Atlassian’s phase-down schedule includes sales restrictions before end of life. The dates below are stated in PST where Atlassian specifies a time; confirm the current policy and your product’s status before making a licensing decision.

Date What changes Who or what is affected
March 30, 2026 at 23:59 PST New-customer sales restrictions start. New customers can no longer buy new subscriptions for impacted Data Center products or new Marketplace Data Center apps.
March 30, 2028 at 23:59 PST Existing-customer sales and expansion restrictions start. Existing customers can no longer buy new impacted Data Center subscriptions, Marketplace apps, or expansions.
March 28, 2029 at 23:59 PST End of life. Impacted Data Center subscriptions and associated Marketplace apps expire; the products and apps become read-only.

Products included—and exceptions

The impacted list includes Jira Software Data Center, Jira Service Management Data Center, Confluence Data Center, Bamboo Data Center, Crowd Data Center, Data Center mobile apps, Atlassian Data Center apps, and Marketplace apps for affected products. Atlassian says Bitbucket Data Center will not end of life and that existing customers will have access to a Bitbucket Hybrid License for Data Center and Cloud. Jira Align Data Center is also excluded. Check each product and app individually rather than assuming the general schedule covers it.

What happens when my Data Center subscription expires?

At end of life, an impacted product becomes read-only: users can access existing data but cannot add data or perform new actions. That is not equivalent to continued full use. Atlassian says it will provide technical support, security bug fixes for critical vulnerabilities, and connectors from Data Center products to Cloud through March 28, 2029; the announced policy does not establish ongoing support or updates after that date.

Atlassian advises preserving backups for long-term access to historical data. Its migration materials also warn against leaving an unsupported read-only instance connected to the internet, so treat read-only status as an end-state for access to existing information, not as a secure long-term operating plan.

Can I renew my Data Center license?

For impacted products, Atlassian distinguishes renewal of an existing subscription from buying a new subscription or expanding an installation. Existing customers can renew through end of life, but a renewal cannot extend beyond March 28, 2029 at 23:59 PST. A term that would otherwise run past that cutoff may be prorated to end on the cutoff date. The earlier March 30, 2028 restriction applies to purchases of new subscriptions, Marketplace apps, and expansions by existing customers.

Atlassian says certain customers may be able to obtain extended maintenance after end of life by exception; its migration page describes it as an additional-cost option. This is a case-by-case possibility, not a guaranteed extension or general entitlement. Cloud trials, step-up credits, dual licensing, and Cloud Enterprise discounts are also subject to eligibility, timing, and current account-specific terms. Confirm availability and commercial terms directly with Atlassian before budgeting around them.

How should I plan an Atlassian migration?

Start with a product and deployment decision, not an assumed destination. Compare lifecycle exposure, license continuity and total cost, data residency and compliance needs, deployment requirements, Marketplace app availability, migration scope, downtime, and the recovery options for the specific application. Atlassian identifies deployment, compliance, and source-code sensitivity as factors to assess; the announced deadlines alone do not determine whether Cloud is the right fit.

Build an inventory and test the actual move

  • List every Atlassian product, version, integration, Marketplace app, user group, and data set in scope.
  • For each app, determine whether it is available and needed in Cloud, or whether a replacement or process change is required.
  • Use the Jira or Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant where applicable. Atlassian builds and maintains these free Marketplace applications; they can help assess apps and move projects, content, users, and groups.
  • Do not treat an assistant’s assessment as a complete audit. Atlassian’s support checklists say the assistants do not detect every possible issue or migrate every configuration. Follow the checklist for the specific product and method, then test in a staging or test Cloud site.
  • Run a test migration before production; complex projects may require more than one. Validate representative permissions, content, workflows, apps, integrations, and user access in the destination.

Set a realistic schedule and runbook

Atlassian’s 2024 Cloud Migration Checklist gives planning estimates of four months for 0–5,000 users, six months for 5,000–10,000 users, and six or more months for more than 10,000 users. These are planning estimates, not guaranteed durations. The checklist recommends lift-and-shift for organizations above 10,000 users and a Solution Partner for migrations above 1,000 users.

Document preparation, testing, production cutover, and post-launch support. The runbook should name owners, actions, expected durations, dependencies, user communications, downtime, go/no-go criteria, and what to do if a validation check fails. Include time for upgrades, cleanup, archiving, backups, and additional testing; do not schedule cutover on the assumption that a test run will expose every issue.

How do I back up before an Atlassian migration?

Atlassian’s lift-and-shift guidance recommends backing up the Data Center source before migration and also backing up the destination Cloud site if it already contains data. Keep customer-controlled copies and verify that your team can access and restore them; a backup is useful only if it covers the data and configuration needed for your recovery plan.

Confluence Cloud service backups are not a rollback copy

Atlassian distinguishes routine service backups, which support application recovery, from a customer-created backup export. Its Confluence Cloud backup page says service backups cannot be used to roll back application data changes. A site administrator can create and download a backup export, but the page says only one backup file is stored at a time; creating a new one overwrites the existing file. Download and retain any export you need rather than assuming the service backup provides a customer-accessible rollback point.

Can I roll back an Atlassian migration?

There is no universal, one-click rollback promise for an Atlassian Cloud migration. The available recovery method depends on the product, the operation, the backups you took, and what changed after cutover. Atlassian’s general lift-and-shift guidance supports testing in advance, backing up the source and any populated destination, and defining recovery steps in the runbook; it does not guarantee automatic reversal or a way to merge post-cutover changes back into the original environment.

Confluence Data Center version upgrades are a separate case

For Confluence Data Center version upgrades, Atlassian Support says it does not provide a tool to downgrade or roll back to a previous version. Its documented recovery procedure requires a pre-upgrade backup and restoration of the database and relevant Confluence home, shared home, and installation directories. The article was updated October 28, 2025. This procedure concerns a Confluence Data Center version upgrade, not a general Cloud migration.

Agree on recovery before production cutover

Before starting production work, decide who can call a stop, what validation failures trigger it, which backups and systems are needed to recover, and how users will be handled during recovery. If the project cannot establish a tested, product-specific recovery path, resolve that gap before cutover rather than relying on an assumed downgrade or automatic reversal.
