Before installing a job-application browser extension, check two separate requests: what the extension can access in your browser, and what your account provider authorizes it to do. Then compare each request with the extension’s advertised features and read how it handles your data. A browser warning describes what an extension may be able to do; it does not, by itself, prove the extension is malicious.
1. Check who made the extension and what it promises
Review the store listing, developer identity, support information, and linked privacy policy. The extension should describe its purpose clearly enough for you to judge why it needs the websites or account data it requests. For example, a job-saving feature may need access to job listings you choose to save; that does not automatically explain access to every website you visit.

The Chromium Project advises users to review both the installation permissions and the extension’s privacy policy or other disclosures linked from its listing. Those materials are the developer’s claims, not independent proof of how the extension behaves. Chromium Extensions Security FAQ.

Check which sites it can reach
Pay attention to whether access is limited to particular sites or extends to all websites you visit. Chrome’s warning “Your data on all the websites you visit” indicates that an extension may be able to read, request, or modify data on every page you visit, potentially including sensitive pages such as a bank account. Chrome’s permission guidance also describes possible access involving browsing history, tabs and browsing activity, location, clipboard data, and installed apps or extensions. Match access to the advertised feature
Ask whether each requested permission makes sense for the extension’s application-filling, job-saving, or tracking features. Chrome Web Store policy says extensions should request the narrowest permissions needed for their features. Chrome also supports optional permissions that an extension can request later, rather than requiring every permission up front. If a broad request is unexplained, pause, ask the developer for a clear reason, or decline it. Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies.
3. Treat account authorization as a separate decision
A “Continue with Google” flow may share only basic profile information, such as your name, email address, and profile picture. A separate Google authorization can request access to services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Photos, or Contacts, with permission to view or copy data, or to manage it. Read the authorization screen for both the data categories and the actions allowed; do not assume a sign-in request and broader account access are the same thing. Never enter your Google Account password into a third-party extension or service. Google warns that sharing the password gives the third party full access to the account. Use Google’s own authorization screen, and proceed only if you understand and trust the access requested. Google Account Help: share your account with a third party.

4. Read the data-handling disclosures
Look for specific answers to these questions:
- What information does the extension collect, and why?
- Is information shared with other parties, and who may see it?
- How is it protected, where is it stored, and how long is it retained?
- How can you request deletion, and what happens to data already copied to the developer’s systems?
Chrome Web Store policy sets requirements for extensions that handle personal or sensitive user data. Google also advises users to consider security, data use, deletion, policy changes, and visibility when evaluating third-party access. A third party’s retention policy governs how long it stores data it receives, and data may be copied to its own servers. A clear, polished policy is useful to review, but it does not establish that an extension has been independently audited or that its implementation matches its disclosures. Access, retention, and security practices vary by extension, so assess the actual listing, prompts, and policy for the one you are considering.
5. Know how to revoke access and request deletion
Google lets you review and remove third-party access through your account connections settings. After you revoke access, the third party can no longer access your Google Account data. Revocation does not guarantee that data the third party already copied has been deleted; Google says you may need to contact the developer and request deletion. The extension may also store account or locally saved data separately, so check its own instructions as well. Google Account Help: manage connections between your Google Account and third parties.

Compare extensions on the same criteria
If you are choosing between extensions, compare their actual requests and disclosures rather than relying on a general impression of safety.

| Developer and control | Whether the developer and support channel are identifiable, and whether you can revoke access. |
