The company said it had launched an urgent investigation, apologized for the image and said its external production partner had explicitly promised not to use generative AI. The partner’s identity and the trailer’s production method have not been disclosed.
Why was the RuneScape trailer taken down?
Viewers questioned whether generative AI had been used in the Dragon Slayer II quest trailer for RuneScape 3, pointing to visual details that appeared inconsistent with human-created artwork, including a six-fingered hand. In a statement posted October 4, 2026, under “RuneScape’s Position on Gen AI,” Jagex said it had taken the trailer down while it investigated urgently.

Jagex acknowledged the six-finger detail, saying it was “pretty hard to explain away,” and apologized. That is the company’s acknowledgment of the concern; its statement does not independently establish the production workflow or identify a particular AI system.

How does the trailer controversy relate to earlier AI criticism?
Games.GG reported that criticism of the trailer came days after criticism over AI use in a third-party apparel collaboration, and after an earlier Jagex community statement rejecting AI in marketing, merchandising and partnerships. The close timing helps explain why players viewed the trailer as conflicting with Jagex’s stated position. The available reporting does not establish that the apparel work and trailer involved the same vendor.
