A University of Glasgow-linked team plans to send whisky samples and wood chips into orbit on a small satellite called Space Puffin, with a launch intended for 2028. The experiment is designed to study how the space environment affects whisky ageing and to test ethanol extraction in orbit. It is a planned experiment—not a finished whisky destined for sale: the satellite is not expected to return to Earth.
What is the Space Puffin project?
Space Puffin is the nickname reported for a Scottish-Japanese CubeSat project linked to the University of Glasgow. Sky News reported on 5 October 2026 that the team intends to launch it in 2028 on a SpaceX resupply mission to the International Space Station, then deploy it from the station’s Japanese module. The proposed mission duration is five years. These are reported plans, not confirmation of a final launch booking or completed flight. Sky News’s report identifies Dr Gilles Bailet of Glasgow as a project researcher. The university describes Bailet as a Lecturer in Space Technology whose research includes future space-mission technologies and in-space manufacturing. University of Glasgow profile.

How will the whisky-ageing experiment work?
The satellite is expected to carry small liquid samples and base ingredients, along with wood chips intended to mimic some aspects of cask ageing. It will not carry a full whisky cask. The team plans to monitor changes in the samples’ colour and chemical composition and send data back to researchers on Earth. The report does not specify final sample volumes, composition, or the data protocol.
Bailet told Sky News the team wants to examine the effect of the space environment on whisky ageing. One hypothesis is that temperature cycling and interaction with wood could speed up some ageing processes. That possibility is not a proven result: the experiment has not yet flown, and there is no reported finding that space accelerates maturation.

Temperature is not the same as sample temperature
Sky News describes rapid environmental changes across a broad range of minus 150 to plus 200 degrees. The report does not establish that the liquid samples themselves will reach those temperatures; it does not give a controlled sample-temperature profile or final thermal specifications. The range should therefore be understood as reported environmental context, not as a measured or guaranteed temperature inside the sample container.
Why study whisky and ethanol in orbit?
Alongside the whisky-ageing question, the project is intended to demonstrate extraction of ethanol in orbit. The broader research interest is whether orbital manufacturing could make molecules, including molecules relevant to medicines. These are aims for the experiment, not capabilities it has already demonstrated. Glasgow’s profile of Bailet describes research interests that include technologies for future missions and in-space manufacturing, but does not independently confirm the satellite’s final design or schedule.

Will the whisky come back to Earth?
No return is expected for this CubeSat. The planned mission is described as five years, and the spacecraft is not expected to be recovered, so this project is not set up to deliver a bottle of space-aged whisky. Bailet told Sky News that a future system might return a small amount after three to five years if investors or other collaborators were secured. That is a conditional possibility, not an approved mission, schedule, or product release.

Which distilleries or whisky brands are involved?
The Sky News report said contributors from Scotland and Japan had not yet been selected. No participating distillery, whisky brand, or bottle is established in the available reporting. Geoff Nisbet, lead process design engineer at distillery-design consultancy Allen Associates, was quoted discussing the project, but that does not identify a whisky supplier.

How is this different from whisky previously sent to space?
Sky News notes that whisky had previously gone to space in an experiment kept within the International Space Station’s temperature-controlled environment. The report does not identify that earlier study or provide details about its sample, wood contact, measurements, or recovery, so a more exact technical comparison cannot be made from that account.
The distinction described for Space Puffin is its planned CubeSat setting and use of wood chips with small samples, plus monitoring of colour and chemical composition. Its proposed tests concern whisky ageing and ethanol extraction, but its actual conditions and results will only be known after the mission is carried out and reported.
