Curiosity Finds Pure Sulfur on Mars—Could It Help Make Concrete?

Curiosity’s 2024 find confirms elemental sulfur on Mars—not a ready supply for construction. Here’s how sulfur concrete works and what experiments have actually shown.

NASA’s Curiosity rover found yellow crystals of elemental sulfur on Mars in May 2024, but the discovery does not mean Martian concrete can now be made. It confirms a natural occurrence of pure sulfur; the crystals’ origin, accessibility and usefulness as construction material remain unestablished.

What did Curiosity find?

On May 30, 2024, Curiosity accidentally crushed a rock while driving through Gediz Vallis on Mount Sharp. The broken rock revealed yellow crystals that rover analysis identified as elemental sulfur—the first pure-form elemental sulfur NASA says has been discovered on Mars. NASA also reported a field of similar stones. NASA’s account of the discovery describes the finding.

Elemental sulfur is different from the sulfur-bearing compounds, such as sulfates, already known on Mars. Gediz Vallis is rich in sulfates, but scientists have not established a relationship between those minerals and the elemental sulfur stones.

How did the sulfur form?

NASA’s mission accounts leave the origin unresolved. Curiosity project scientist Ashwin Vasavada said scientists had examined the field from different angles and collected data, but had no ready explanation for why sulfur formed there. On Earth, sulfur is associated with volcanoes and hot springs; NASA reported no evidence for either cause at the Mount Sharp location. Those Earth associations are not an explanation of the Martian discovery. NASA’s follow-up account discusses the open geological question.

Could sulfur be used to make concrete on Mars?

Sulfur concrete is a proposed construction material made by combining elemental sulfur with aggregate. Unlike ordinary cement-based concrete, its preparation does not require water, a potential advantage in an environment where water is a constrained resource. A 2022 review describes sulfur concrete as an attractive candidate for Martian construction, not an operational technology, and identifies obtaining elemental sulfur from Martian sulfur compounds as a key challenge. The review by Barkatt and Okutsu describes typical sulfur-concrete formulations as containing 5%–30% sulfur by weight. That is a general material range, not a measurement of Martian soil or a resource estimate.

Curiosity’s discovery does not show that the sulfur field is accessible, extractable in useful quantities or suitable as building feedstock. It also does not demonstrate that anyone has made concrete on Mars. Finding a natural occurrence is a different step from developing a reliable supply and a workable production process.

What have experiments shown?

Earth-based laboratory research has tested mixtures of molten sulfur and simulated Martian soil. In a 2016 experimental study, Cusatis and colleagues reported an optimum unconfined compressive strength above 50 MPa for one formulated sample. This result applies to an experimental material made with simulated soil on Earth; it is not a strength measurement from a structure built or tested on Mars. The study’s arXiv record describes its experiments and numerical simulations.
