The exact message may say “iscomlog.dll is missing,” “iscomlog.dll was not found,” or “iscomlog.dll could not be loaded.” iscomlog.dll is a genuine Microsoft IIS file, described as the Microsoft IIS Common Logging Interface DLL.
It belongs to Internet Information Services, the optional Windows web-server component. It does not belong to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a general-purpose game runtime. The safest fix is to restore or repair IIS rather than download a standalone DLL.

Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that best matches what you see:
- IIS is not installed: Enable Internet Information Services through Windows Features or Server Manager.
- IIS was installed but the file disappeared: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then reinstall the IIS feature if necessary.
- The error started after an upgrade or update: Restart, install pending Windows updates, and repair the component store.
- An old application shows the error: Repair or reinstall that application after restoring IIS.
- Your antivirus quarantined the file: Check its quarantine history, then repair IIS through Windows instead of restoring an unknown copy.
- The file exists but will not load: Check the exact error path, Event Viewer, IIS configuration, permissions, and architecture.
- You are considering
regsvr32: Use it only for a matching legacy IIS registration problem. It is not a universal missing-DLL command.
Before changing anything, note the full path shown in the error and whether you are running Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server.
What is iscomlog.dll
iscomlog.dll is an IIS component associated with common logging interfaces. IIS uses native and COM-based modules, and Microsoft’s IIS documentation describes logging plug-ins as components that implement IIS logging interfaces.

Historically, the file was found under:
%windir%System32inetsrviscomlog.dll
The exact location and file version can vary by Windows and IIS generation. IIS is optional, so this file is not expected on every Windows installation.
Microsoft has shipped different IIS builds for different Windows generations and processor architectures. Historical records include x86 and x64 versions, meaning there is no single universal file size or version that is correct for every computer.
Do not assume that a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation must contain this exact legacy filename. The correct component depends on the installed Windows build, IIS features, servicing state, and the application requesting it.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 1: Install or restore IIS through Windows Features
This is the most appropriate fix when the error appears because IIS is missing or only partially installed.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:

optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Find Internet Information Services.
- Select the main IIS entry and the required child components.
- Expand Web Management Tools if the affected application needs IIS management tools.
- Expand World Wide Web Services and select the features required by the application.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to install the feature.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
If you do not know which IIS subfeatures the old application requires, begin with the main Internet Information Services feature and the default web-server components. Avoid enabling unrelated services simply to make the error disappear.
You can also use an elevated PowerShell window:
- Open Start.
- Search for PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
powershell
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName IIS-WebServerRole -All
- Restart Windows if prompted.
The exact optional-feature name can vary by Windows release. If PowerShell reports that the feature name is unknown, list available IIS features:

How to tell whether this worked
After restarting:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:

inetmgr
- Press Enter.
If IIS Manager opens, the IIS role is installed. You can also check whether the expected file is present under the IIS directory. Do not copy another file into that folder if it is absent. Continue with the repair steps below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this fix when IIS installation fails, the file disappeared after an update, or Windows reports that a protected component is damaged.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. It normally obtains repair content through Windows Update. If Windows Update is unavailable, DISM may report that the source files cannot be found. In that case, use a matching Windows installation source rather than an arbitrary DLL download.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and try the affected application again.
SFC may report that it repaired files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. If it cannot repair everything, restart and run the DISM command again, followed by SFC. If the issue remains, remove and reinstall the IIS feature through Windows Features.
When you are repeatedly hunting through Windows versions and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems it detects; repair is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required.
Fix 3: Reinstall the IIS feature cleanly
If IIS is shown as installed but its files or feature state are inconsistent, remove and add the feature again.
Windows client
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Clear Internet Information Services.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable Internet Information Services again.
- Select the IIS subfeatures required by the application.
- Restart once more if requested.
Removing IIS can remove or alter IIS configuration. If the machine hosts websites, record the configuration and application requirements before proceeding.
Windows Server
On Windows Server:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Select Add Roles and Features.
- Continue through the wizard until Server Roles.
- Select Web Server (IIS).
- Add the management tools if required.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart if prompted.
From an elevated PowerShell window, Microsoft also documents:
Install-WindowsFeature Web-Server -IncludeManagementTools
This command applies to supported Windows Server installations, not ordinary Windows client editions.

Fix 4: Repair the application that requested the file
If the error appears only when opening one old application, installer, or management console, IIS may be present but incompatible with what that program expects.
First restore IIS and repair Windows. Then:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Open its menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- If there is no repair option, reinstall the program from its official vendor source.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
An old application may expect a particular IIS generation, configuration, or registration state. Replacing iscomlog.dll alone does not recreate those dependencies.
If the program is no longer maintained, use a supported version of the application or run it on a compatible Windows Server and IIS environment. Do not mix a file from an older Windows release with a newer IIS installation.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows component after a detection or file-integrity problem.
- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detection history.
- Search for
iscomlog.dll. - Check the reported path.
- Confirm whether the file was under the Windows IIS directory.
- Do not restore it automatically if the path or publisher information is unclear.
- Update Windows and your security definitions.
- Repair IIS through Windows Features and run DISM and SFC.
A missing file does not by itself prove malware. It may have been removed manually, damaged during servicing, deleted by cleanup software, or never installed because IIS was not enabled.
Fix 6: Check the path and the exact load error
A message saying that iscomlog.dll could not be loaded does not always mean the file is absent.
Check the full path in the error:
- If it points to the Windows IIS directory, investigate IIS installation and servicing.
- If it points to an application folder, the application may be incorrectly bundling or requesting an IIS component.
- If it names another DLL as a dependency, repair that component instead.
- If the file exists but still fails, investigate permissions, architecture, registration, or a damaged dependency.
Open Event Viewer to find more detail:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System.
- Also review Applications and Services Logs for IIS-related entries when available.
- Look for events recorded at the time of the failure.
- Note the application name, path, error code, and any dependency mentioned.
IIS logs may also identify whether the failure comes from a web application, a module, or the IIS service itself.
Does regsvr32 iscomlog.dll fix the problem
Usually, no. regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download a missing file, repair Windows servicing, or install IIS.
Microsoft documentation historically described registering both iislog.dll and iscomlog.dll for a narrow legacy IIS logging-format problem. That procedure applied to particular IIS 5 or IIS 6 scenarios. It should not be treated as a universal solution for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

- Optimized Performance – Enhanced networking and storage capabilities with improved data handling and support for high-performance workloads
- User-Friendly Interface – A modernized desktop experience with streamlined management tools such as WinGet and Terminal.
Only consider registration when all of these conditions apply:
- The application or Microsoft documentation identifies a legacy IIS COM-registration problem.
- The file belongs to the matching IIS installation.
- You are using the correct administrator command environment.
- You have confirmed that registration, rather than absence or corruption, is the reported problem.
Do not run random regsvr32 commands copied from an unknown website. If the DLL is missing, registering it cannot work. Restore the owning IIS feature instead.

IIS has existed in both x86 and x64 builds. A 32-bit copy of iscomlog.dll is not automatically interchangeable with a 64-bit copy.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
For an application:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- Check whether the application is a 32-bit process where Windows displays that information.
Architecture alone does not tell you which file to download, because downloading a standalone DLL is not the safe repair path. Install the IIS component provided for the current Windows build and allow Windows servicing to supply the matching files.
A wrong-architecture file can produce a load failure or “bad image” error even when the filename is correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do drivers matter here
Drivers are not the normal owner of iscomlog.dll, and Device Manager will not restore an IIS DLL. Use driver troubleshooting only if Event Viewer identifies a separate hardware, storage, or system dependency problem.
To inspect drivers:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the issue began after a storage or system-device change, check the device manufacturer and Windows Update before making manual driver changes. When the difficult part is hunting through many hardware entries and guessing which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can show detected driver issues; installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required to repair IIS.
Why common fixes do not help
Installing Visual C++ Redistributables
Visual C++ packages do not own this IIS component. Installing them is not the supported repair for a missing iscomlog.dll.
Reinstalling DirectX
DirectX is unrelated to IIS logging. Reinstalling it should not be used as the primary fix.
Reinstalling .NET
.NET may be required by a particular application or IIS configuration, but it does not establish that .NET owns iscomlog.dll. Restore IIS first, then follow the affected application’s documented requirements.

Copying the file into the application folder
This can create a mismatched or unsafe application-local DLL. IIS expects its own files in the Windows IIS installation and may also require matching configuration and registration state.
Preventing the error from returning
- Keep Windows updated and restart after major feature or servicing changes.
- Do not delete files from the IIS directory during disk cleanup.
- Keep a record of installed IIS roles and services on server machines.
- Use the application’s supported IIS requirements before upgrading Windows.
- Check antivirus quarantine before manually restoring system files.
- Keep backups or system recovery options available before changing IIS configuration.
- Avoid standalone DLL repositories and unofficial “fixer” installers.
- If an old application depends on retired IIS behavior, plan a supported application or server upgrade rather than repeatedly replacing files.
Frequently asked questions
Is iscomlog.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft IIS component. Safety depends on its path, signature, and origin. A file with the same name downloaded from an unknown source is not automatically genuine.
Is IIS included with every Windows installation?
No. IIS is an optional Windows feature on client editions and a Web Server role on Windows Server.
Should I download iscomlog.dll?
No. Do not begin with a standalone download. Restore IIS through Windows Features, Server Manager, or Windows servicing so the file matches the operating system.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can missing iscomlog.dll mean malware?
Not by itself. An uninstalled IIS role, failed update, component corruption, manual deletion, or antivirus quarantine are more direct explanations. Investigate the path and scan the system if the file was found outside the normal IIS location.
Why does an ordinary desktop application need IIS?
An older application, installer, local management tool, or development package may use IIS or expect IIS components. The exact program cannot be identified from the filename alone.
What if the file exists but still will not load?
Check the complete error path, Event Viewer, IIS configuration, permissions, architecture, and dependent files. Then repair IIS and the application rather than replacing the file with another version.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
Only in a narrow, matching legacy IIS registration scenario. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
