The most likely reason is that the drive is an M.2 SATA SSD, while the Minisforum MS-01’s published specifications list its internal M.2 storage slots as PCIe/NVMe. An M.2 SATA drive can fit physically but remain invisible in BIOS, Windows Setup, Linux, or Proxmox. Confirm the SSD’s protocol before changing Windows settings.
First, identify the SSD correctly
“M.2” describes the drive’s shape and connector—not its storage protocol. M.2 drives can use either SATA or PCIe/NVMe signaling, and those types are not automatically interchangeable.

Check the exact model number printed on the SSD or its packaging. If it is described as M.2 SATA, SATA III, or 6Gb/s SATA, it is not the correct drive for the MS-01’s internal M.2 slots. Do not identify the protocol from the notch pattern alone.

- 2.5-inch SATA SSD: a conventional rectangular drive requiring SATA data and power connections.
- M.2 SATA SSD: an M.2-shaped drive using the SATA protocol.
- M.2 NVMe SSD: an M.2-shaped PCIe/NVMe drive, which is the expected type for the MS-01.
The official MS-01 specifications list three M.2 positions as PCIe/NVMe and do not list M.2 SATA support.

Check the slot and M.2/U.2 selector
The MS-01’s listed storage positions are:
| Position | Interface | Drive support |
|---|---|---|
| First M.2 slot | PCIe 4.0 x4 | M.2 2280 NVMe; supports an alternate U.2 configuration |
| Second M.2 slot | PCIe 3.0 x4 | M.2 2280 or 22110 NVMe |
| Third M.2 slot | PCIe 3.0 x2 | M.2 2280 or 22110 NVMe |
If you are using the first storage position, verify the selector is set to M.2 mode for an M.2 NVMe drive. It must be set for the appropriate U.2 configuration when using the U.2 conversion hardware. Use the switch labels and installation illustration in the MS-01 manual rather than guessing or trying random positions.
The product page contains differing capacity descriptions for various configurations, so do not assume that every 4TB or 8TB SSD is supported simply because a maximum capacity is advertised. Confirm the drive’s size, physical dimensions, firmware, and configuration.
Reseat the SSD and inspect the installation
- Shut down the MS-01 completely.
- Disconnect the power adapter and briefly press the power button.
- Remove the cover and SSD heatsink.
- Remove the retaining screw and take out the drive.
- Inspect the connector, screw hole, thermal pad, and nearby components.
- Reinsert the SSD at roughly a 25–30-degree angle.
- Press it flat without bending the circuit board and install the correct retaining screw.
- Refit the heatsink and thermal pad without excessive pressure.
- Boot directly into BIOS and check whether the drive is listed.
Check whether the drive is M.2 2280 or 22110, and whether it is single-sided or double-sided. A thick heatsink or double-sided SSD may create clearance or heatsink-pressure problems even when the length is correct. Community reports have raised this as a possible edge case, not a confirmed universal incompatibility.
Check BIOS before troubleshooting Windows
If the SSD is absent from BIOS, Windows drivers, formatting, Disk Management, and partition changes cannot fix the underlying problem. The likely causes are an M.2 SATA drive, an incorrect selector setting, poor contact, physical clearance, outdated firmware, an incompatible or failed SSD, or a faulty slot.

If BIOS does detect the drive but Windows does not, continue with operating-system checks. Record your BIOS version and compare it with the MS-01 entries on Minisforum’s official product-support page. The page currently lists MS-01 BIOS versions including 1.26 and 1.27, but the listing alone does not prove that a particular version fixes every SSD-detection problem.
Update only with the BIOS intended for your exact MS-01 variant. Use reliable power, follow Minisforum’s instructions, and do not interrupt the update. Afterward, recheck default settings, the M.2/U.2 selector, and drive detection.
Cross-test with a known-good NVMe drive
A controlled test is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the same SSD. Do not use an M.2 SATA drive as the comparison drive.
| Test | Likely interpretation |
|---|---|
| Known-good NVMe works in the same MS-01 slot | The original SSD, its firmware, or its compatibility is suspect. |
| Known-good NVMe fails in the same slot | Check the selector, BIOS, slot, and motherboard. |
| The suspect NVMe works in another MS-01 slot | The first slot’s selector or configuration may be wrong. |
| The suspect drive fails in another computer or compatible enclosure | The drive may be defective or the enclosure may use the wrong protocol. |
| Several known-good NVMe drives fail in multiple MS-01 slots | Suspect firmware, configuration, or MS-01 hardware. |
If BIOS sees it but Windows does not
In Windows, open Disk Management and choose Action → Rescan Disks. If the disk appears as offline or uninitialized, verify that it is the intended disk before bringing it online or initializing it. GPT is normally appropriate for a modern Windows installation.

For a non-destructive command-line check, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
diskpart
rescan
list disk
list volume
exit
Do not run clean, delete partitions, format the disk, or initialize it unless you have confirmed the disk identity and backed up any needed data.
If the disk is visible in BIOS but missing from Windows Setup, check whether BIOS is using RAID or Intel VMD mode and whether Windows Setup requires the corresponding storage controller driver. Device Manager can also be used to rescan for hardware changes and inspect storage-controller errors.

lspci | grep -i -E 'non-volatile|nvme'
nvme list
lsblk -o NAME,MODEL,SERIAL,SIZE,TYPE,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINTS
dmesg | grep -i -E 'nvme|pcie|timeout|reset'
A drive absent from lspci points toward hardware, firmware, selector, or physical-connection problems. A visible NVMe controller with no namespace suggests a drive, firmware, or controller issue. A visible block device that is not mounted is a separate filesystem or configuration problem.
With Proxmox, also distinguish a host-detection problem from a virtual-machine passthrough problem. VM PCIe and machine-type settings can affect passthrough, but individual community reports are not proof of a universal MS-01 or Proxmox fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Investigate intermittent disappearance
If the SSD works after a cold boot but disappears during heavy use or after sleep, investigate thermal and power-management behavior:
- Fit the supplied heatsink and thermal pad correctly.
- Check SSD temperature during sustained activity.
- Compare cold boot, warm reboot, sleep/wake, and heavy-load behavior.
- Install the SSD manufacturer’s firmware update, if available.
- Inspect Linux or Windows logs for NVMe resets, timeouts, or PCIe errors.
- Temporarily test with aggressive PCIe power saving or ASPM disabled, only as a diagnostic step.
One community report described intermittent behavior with a Samsung 990 Pro heatsink configuration while other drives behaved differently. That is anecdotal and does not establish that Samsung 990 Pro drives, or all MS-01 systems, are incompatible. Similarly, disabling Secure Boot is sometimes suggested in forums, but it should be treated as a secondary diagnostic step rather than the primary explanation.

Choosing a replacement or alternative
For the lowest installation risk, choose a single-sided M.2 2280 PCIe/NVMe SSD with a manufacturer firmware-update utility and a suitable return policy. Do not buy based only on “M.2 SSD”; the listing should explicitly say PCIe NVMe.
U.2 NVMe is an advanced alternative for enterprise-oriented or higher-capacity storage, but it requires the correct first-slot configuration and suitable conversion hardware. It is not a way to use an M.2 SATA drive.
If you already own the wrong type of SSD:
- Use a 2.5-inch SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure for a conventional 2.5-inch SATA SSD.
- Use an M.2 SATA enclosure for an M.2 SATA SSD.
- Use an NVMe enclosure for an M.2 NVMe SSD.
NVMe-only and SATA-only enclosures are not interchangeable unless the enclosure explicitly supports both protocols.

Minisforum lists official product support and the technical-support address [email protected]. Include:
- MS-01 CPU and model variant, serial number, and BIOS version.
- SSD manufacturer, model, capacity, firmware, and single- or double-sided construction.
- Slot used and M.2/U.2 selector position.
- Whether BIOS detects the drive.
- Photos of the installation and selector.
- Results of the known-good-NVMe cross-test.
- Relevant Windows Event Viewer or Linux/Proxmox logs.
The practical diagnosis is usually straightforward: an M.2 SATA SSD is the wrong protocol for the MS-01’s listed internal slots; a compatible NVMe drive that remains absent after reseating, selector checks, BIOS checks, and cross-testing points toward configuration, firmware, or hardware failure.
