Zcash mining is profitable only when the value of your expected ZEC exceeds electricity, pool, hosting, hardware and operating costs. Profit changes continuously with ZEC price, network hashrate, block reward, pool fee, machine efficiency, uptime and your electricity tariff. Treat every calculator result as a timestamped scenario, not a promise.
For example, an Equihash calculator snapshot dated 19 October 2026 estimated $43.12 gross revenue and a $37.78 daily operating margin for an 840 kSol/s miner using 2,780 watts at $0.08 per kWh with a 1% pool fee. That result excludes hardware purchase cost, taxes, downtime, stale shares, hosting, import charges and repairs.

A positive daily margin does not automatically mean the machine is a good investment. You must also recover the purchase price, installation, shipping, taxes, financing and eventual repair costs. A miner can show a positive margin today and still fail to repay its hardware if ZEC falls, network competition rises or the machine spends too much time offline.
Profitability is especially sensitive because your machine receives only a share of network rewards. If the network adds twice as much compatible hashrate while your machine stays unchanged, your expected share of blocks is approximately halved. ZEC price and the protocol’s reward schedule can change independently of your electricity bill.
Inputs that must be dated
| Input | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| ZEC market price | Converts expected coins into revenue; it can move substantially between the time you start a calculation and the time you receive a payout. |
| Network hashrate or difficulty | Determines your share of solutions. Use a current value and record when it was checked. |
| Block time and miner reward | Set the number of reward opportunities and the ZEC awarded per block. Confirm the current protocol rules. |
| Your compatible hashrate | Zcash uses Equihash 200,9, and performance is measured in solutions per second, commonly kSol/s or KSols. |
| Wall power | Use measured or manufacturer-rated watts at the wall, not just the chip’s nominal power. |
| Electricity rate | Include demand charges, taxes and time-of-use differences where they apply. |
| Pool fee and uptime | Fees reduce rewards directly; downtime, stale shares and rejected work reduce them indirectly. |
How Zcash mining works
Zcash mining uses the Equihash 200,9 proof-of-work algorithm. A miner repeatedly searches for valid solutions and submits them to a pool or, less commonly, mines alone. Hashrate is therefore expressed as solutions per second rather than the hashes-per-second units used by some other algorithms.
The Zcash Community identifies ASICs as holding most of the network’s hashpower. Its guide lists the Antminer Z15 at about 420 KSols and 1,510 watts. Bitcoin SHA-256, Scrypt, Lyra2REv2, EtHash and other non-Equihash ASICs cannot mine Zcash; buying one of those machines does not make it compatible.
Can a GPU mine Zcash?
A GPU can technically run Equihash software, but ASICs dominate the network. That makes a general-purpose GPU economically difficult to justify unless you already own the hardware, have unusually cheap electricity and accept that expected revenue may be far below an ASIC’s. A GPU’s purchase price, power draw and resale value should be entered into the same formulas as an ASIC rather than assumed to be profitable because it is capable of producing shares.

The calculation framework
Use these equations in order. Keep the units consistent: if hashrate is in kSol/s, convert the network figure to the same unit before dividing.
Expected ZEC per day = (your compatible hashrate ÷ network hashrate)
× (86,400 ÷ block time in seconds)
× miner reward per block
× (1 − pool fee)
Gross revenue per day = expected ZEC per day × ZEC price
Electricity per day = (wall watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 × electricity rate
Operating margin per day = gross revenue
− electricity
− pool, hosting and other operating costs
The reward term must match the current rules and your payout arrangement. An Electric Coin Company Zcash Learn page has described a historical context of “roughly 1.25 ZEC + transaction fees per block.” That wording is not a guarantee of the 2026 reward, so verify the active subsidy and fee rules before using it in a live calculation.
How much electricity does a Zcash miner use?
The daily energy equation is simple:
daily kilowatt-hours = (watts ÷ 1,000) × 24
For the 1,510-watt Antminer Z15 specification, consumption is 36.24 kWh per day if it runs continuously for 24 hours.
| Electricity rate | Daily energy | Daily electricity cost | Approximate 30-day cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.05/kWh | 36.24 kWh | $1.81 | $54.36 |
| $0.10/kWh | 36.24 kWh | $3.62 | $108.60 |
| $0.15/kWh | 36.24 kWh | $5.44 | $163.20 |
The 30-day figures assume uninterrupted operation and a constant tariff; your bill may be higher when taxes, demand charges or cooling loads are added. A 2,780-watt machine uses 66.72 kWh per day. At $0.08/kWh, that is $5.34 per day before any separate cooling or facility costs.

| Miner hashrate | 840 kSol/s |
| Wall power | 2,780 W |
| Electricity rate | $0.08/kWh |
| Pool fee | 1% |
| Reported gross revenue | $43.12 per day |
| Reported operating margin | $37.78 per day |
The machine’s electricity calculation is 2.78 kW × 24 = 66.72 kWh per day, and 66.72 × $0.08 = $5.34. Subtracting that electricity amount from the reported gross revenue produces the stated $37.78 margin before any costs not included by the calculator.

The calculator withholds current economics when required network inputs are unavailable, which is preferable to presenting a fabricated estimate.
Finding your break-even electricity price
Break-even electricity price is the maximum energy rate at which gross revenue exactly covers electricity alone:
break-even electricity price = gross revenue per day ÷ daily kWh
Using the dated scenario above, $43.12 ÷ 66.72 kWh equals approximately $0.646 per kWh. This is an electricity-only threshold. Pool charges beyond the displayed assumption, hosting, cooling, taxes, maintenance and downtime make the practical threshold lower.

For the 1,510-watt Z15 example, use your own expected gross revenue and 36.24 kWh per day. If your calculated gross revenue is $6 per day, the electricity-only break-even rate is $6 ÷ 36.24, or about $0.166 per kWh. If revenue falls to $3, the threshold falls to about $0.083 per kWh. The calculation must be redone whenever price, difficulty, reward or uptime changes.
Estimating hardware payback time
Simple payback is:
payback days = hardware purchase price ÷ operating margin per day
This is a mathematical recovery period, not a guaranteed return on investment. It assumes the margin remains unchanged, the miner runs continuously and no major repair or tax is incurred. Those assumptions rarely hold for long periods in a competitive proof-of-work network.
For illustration only, if a machine cost $5,000 and maintained a $37.78 daily operating margin, simple payback would be about 132 days. At a $10,000 purchase price and the same unchanged margin, it would be about 265 days. These examples are not market prices or forecasts; replace them with the delivered price you can actually obtain, including shipping, import charges, power equipment and installation.
What can extend payback?
- A lower ZEC price reduces revenue in proportion to the price decline.
- More network hashrate or higher difficulty reduces your expected share of rewards.
- Pool downtime, stale shares and hardware downtime reduce realized payouts.
- Fans, power supplies and hashboards can require repairs or replacement.
- Cooling, ventilation, rent, hosting and internet service can turn a positive mining margin negative.
- Taxes and selling costs reduce the amount you keep after receiving ZEC.
- Resale value can help recover capital, but it is uncertain and depends on machine condition and market demand.
Comparing Zcash ASICs correctly
Hashrate alone is a poor ranking method. Compare compatible Equihash 200,9 machines using the same dated network and price assumptions.

Step-by-step profitability check
- Record the timestamp. Write down the date and time, ZEC price, network hashrate or difficulty, block time and reward assumption.
- Confirm compatibility. Verify that the machine supports Equihash 200,9. Do not substitute an ASIC designed for SHA-256, Scrypt, Lyra2REv2 or EtHash.
- Enter hashrate and power. Use the manufacturer’s compatible hashrate and wall watts; use a power meter after installation when possible.
- Calculate expected ZEC per day. Apply the network-share formula and subtract the pool fee.
- Convert coins to revenue. Multiply expected ZEC by the recorded ZEC price. Keep a second calculation using a lower price to expose downside risk.
- Calculate electricity. Convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by 24 and then by your all-in electricity rate.
- Add every operating cost. Include hosting, cooling, internet, maintenance allowance, payment fees and expected downtime.
- Calculate margin and thresholds. Use the operating-margin and break-even-price formulas. Stop if the margin is zero or negative under a reasonable downside case.
- Calculate simple payback. Divide the fully delivered hardware cost by the daily margin. Present the result as a scenario, not a promised date.
- Recheck regularly. Recalculate when ZEC price, network hashrate, reward rules, electricity tariffs or machine performance changes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a gross-revenue number as profit
Gross revenue is before electricity and other expenses. Always display gross revenue, electricity, other operating costs and margin as separate lines.
Mixing hashrate units
A network figure in GSol/s and a miner figure in kSol/s differ by a factor of one million. Convert both to the same unit before dividing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming a historical reward is current
The historical “roughly 1.25 ZEC plus transaction fees” wording is context, not a current guarantee. Confirm the active reward schedule and any network changes.
Ignoring facility constraints
A 1,510-watt machine draws about 6.3 amps on a 240-volt circuit before startup and other loads; a 2,780-watt machine draws about 11.6 amps at 240 volts. Have electrical capacity, ventilation and heat removal checked by a qualified professional rather than treating the nameplate wattage as the only requirement.
Trusting a single optimistic scenario
Run at least three cases: a favorable price and network condition, a base case using current observations, and a downside case with lower ZEC price, higher network hashrate and reduced uptime. If the machine is unprofitable in the downside case, the purchase depends on conditions you cannot control.
Decision rule
Proceed only when a dated, conservative calculation leaves a margin after electricity, pool, hosting, cooling, maintenance and downtime allowances, and when the resulting payback period is acceptable without assuming that today’s ZEC price or network hashrate will persist. If you cannot obtain reliable reward, network and power inputs, the correct conclusion is that profitability is unestablished—not that the miner is profitable.
