The smallest punch-out on a Jio SIM may be nano-SIM size, but Jio’s public pages do not confirm that every physical Jio SIM is nano-only. Check your exact phone model’s manual or official specifications, then compare its SIM requirement with the outline of your card. SIM size and 5G readiness are separate: Jio says its SIMs are already 5G-ready, so a 5G phone alone does not mean you need a replacement SIM.
Is Jio SIM a nano SIM?
It can be, if the smallest punch-out on your physical Jio card is separated. However, Jio’s published information does not establish that every physical SIM it issues is nano-only or has the same punch-out format. Check the card in your hand rather than identifying its size from the Jio logo or the network generation.

A nano-SIM is the physical 4FF format. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) lists its dimensions as 12.3 × 8.8 × 0.67 mm in a 2025 consultation paper. The phone’s specified SIM format is what determines whether the card fits.
How to check whether your Jio SIM fits your phone
- Find the exact phone model. Check the model name and number in your phone’s settings, box, or device information.
- Check the manufacturer’s manual or official specifications. Confirm whether the SIM tray takes nano-SIM, another physical SIM size, or supports eSIM.
- Inspect the Jio card’s punch-out. If it has nested cut lines, use the punch-out that matches the phone’s specified format. Do not assume the SIM’s original outer card is the size the phone needs.
- If the size is unclear, ask Jio. Contact Jio support or visit a Jio store for help with the particular card and handset.

How do physical SIM sizes differ?
TRAI’s 2025 consultation paper distinguishes these physical SIM formats:

Does a Jio 4G SIM need an upgrade for 5G?
No replacement is required just because you have bought a 5G phone. Jio’s About 5G FAQ says: “No, you don’t need to upgrade. All Jio SIMs, including eSIMs, are already 5G-ready.” That statement is about network readiness, not the physical size of a removable SIM.

To use Jio True 5G, Jio says you need a compatible 5G handset, Jio True 5G coverage where you are, and an eligible plan. Check Jio’s current 5G coverage and plan information for eligibility, since plan details can change.

Is eSIM the same as a nano-SIM?
No. Nano-SIM is a physical format that goes into a handset’s SIM tray. An eSIM is embedded in the device and is not a removable card; TRAI treats embedded SIM separately from physical SIM formats. Jio says eSIMs are also 5G-ready, but whether your phone supports Jio eSIM depends on the device and Jio’s service requirements.

Do not force the card into the tray, trim it, or assume a SIM used in one device will fit another. Confirm the required format in the new handset’s documentation and ask Jio support or a store about the card you have.
