Upstart says most states have no minimum credit score for loans on its marketplace, but that does not guarantee approval or a low rate. Its unsecured personal loans currently carry stated APRs of 6.3%–35.99%, based on five-year rates offered in June 2026; your actual rate and eligibility depend on your state and application. The practical question is whether a personalized offer’s APR, fee, and cash proceeds make sense for you.

Can you get an Upstart personal loan with fair credit?

Possibly, but a fair or average credit profile does not establish that you will qualify. Upstart says most states have no minimum credit score requirement for loans on its marketplace, while some participating lenders set their own minimums. Eligibility also considers information such as income and employment. A low score is not an approval guarantee, and the available terms do not show what rate a particular fair-credit borrower will receive. Upstart’s eligibility explainer describes the stated score policy.

Upstart is a marketplace, not the lender: regulated financial institutions make the loans. Its SEC filing describes applications being screened against lender credit criteria before model-based risk evaluation and pricing. That helps explain why considering information beyond a conventional credit score does not mean a score or other qualification criteria are irrelevant. Upstart’s SEC filing provides further detail about this process.

What is the minimum credit score for an Upstart loan?

Upstart’s published answer is that most states have no minimum credit score requirement for loans through its marketplace; some lending partners may impose a minimum. This is a description of the marketplace’s general policy, not a promise that every applicant can apply in every state or will be approved. The lender’s criteria and the rest of your application still matter.

What rates, loan amounts, and terms does Upstart list?

Upstart’s personal-loan page lists fixed unsecured personal-loan APRs of 6.3%–35.99%. The range is based on five-year rates offered in June 2026, varies by state, and depends on applicant information. Upstart says its lowest rates are for its most qualified applicants, so the advertised floor is not a useful estimate of an individual fair-credit borrower’s likely offer. See Upstart’s personal-loan disclosures.

Its application page lists loan amounts from $1,000 to $75,000 and terms of three or five years, subject to state availability and qualification. The application page is the source for those listed ranges.

What does an Upstart loan cost after fees?

APR is a better comparison point than interest rate alone because it reflects the cost of borrowing, including applicable fees. Upstart’s published representative example shows how an origination fee can reduce the money you receive:

Item Upstart’s representative example
Loan principal $10,000
Term 60 months
Interest rate 19.08%
Origination fee $815, deducted from proceeds
APR 23.37%
Cash proceeds $9,185
Payments 60 monthly payments of $261

This is Upstart’s published example, not a quote or forecast for your application; the page says its rate range is based on five-year rates offered in June 2026. Upstart’s product disclosures provide the example.

Before accepting any offer, check whether the amount deposited will cover your need after fees. Compare the personalized APR, origination fee, net proceeds, monthly payment, term, and total repayment. Upstart’s fee explainer also recommends comparing APR when fees may make loans with similar interest rates cost different amounts. Read Upstart’s explanation of personal-loan fees.

Will checking your rate affect your credit?

Upstart says the initial rate check uses a soft inquiry that does not affect your credit score. If you accept the rate and proceed with the application, a hard inquiry can affect your score. The distinction matters: checking is not the same step as continuing with a loan application. Upstart’s personal-loan disclosures explain the inquiries.

Can you pay an Upstart loan off early?

Upstart says borrowers may prepay at any time without a fee or penalty. Review the terms of the specific offer before accepting, and include the prepayment policy in comparisons with other offers. Upstart’s product page states its policy.

How to judge a personalized offer

  1. Check eligibility and state availability. The general no-minimum-score policy applies in most states; partner requirements and state rules can affect availability.
  2. Review the credit inquiry step. The initial rate check is a soft inquiry; proceeding with an application triggers a hard inquiry that can affect your score.
  3. Compare the complete offer. Put APR, origination fee, net deposit, payment, term, and total repayment beside written offers from other lenders. Compare personalized offers with personalized offers, not Upstart’s advertised minimum with someone else’s typical rate.
  4. Confirm the amount you will actually receive. A fee deducted from proceeds means your deposit may be less than the principal you owe.
  5. Decide whether the payment and term work for your budget. Do not accept based on the monthly payment alone; a longer term can change total repayment.

Upstart personal loan review: the trade-off

Upstart’s marketplace may be worth checking for borrowers whose credit profile is not straightforward, because the company says it considers more than a conventional score and most states have no marketplace minimum score. But neither that policy nor the advertised rate range establishes that a fair-credit applicant will be approved or receive an affordable offer. Its value can only be judged from the specific lender’s personalized terms, including APR and the amount deposited after fees.
