A healthier home starts with reducing hazards where they begin, maintaining alarms and fuel-burning appliances, keeping moisture and lead dust under control, and adapting safety measures as children grow. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offer practical guidance in these areas. Children can be more vulnerable to environmental hazards because they take in more air, food, and water relative to their body weight, and their behavior affects how they encounter risks.
1. Keep the home and car smoke-free
Make the home and car smoke-free, including rooms or areas where children spend time. The AAP’s Indoor Air Pollutants guidance, last updated January 8, 2024, identifies prohibiting indoor smoking as the most important step for reducing indoor air pollutants. Its guidance also describes cleaners, combustion, furnishings, mold, and other chemicals as possible pollution sources.

Start by avoiding or reducing the source rather than expecting an air cleaner to solve the problem. If you use an air purifier, treat it as an adjunct—not a substitute for controlling pollution sources and ventilating appropriately.

2. Control dampness and avoidable chemical exposures
Repair moisture problems
Fix leaks and address dampness rather than leaving water damage or persistent moisture untreated. Keep the home appropriately ventilated, taking outdoor air conditions into account.

Use household products carefully
The AAP advises safely managing pests, avoiding chemical air fresheners and scented candles, and storing leftover solvents and similar chemicals away from areas people frequently visit. These steps reduce avoidable sources of indoor exposure without assuming that one product or device can make a home healthy.
3. Maintain alarms and combustion appliances
Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on each sleeping level, and follow local rules and each device’s instructions for placement, testing, and replacement. Have furnaces, wood stoves, and fireplaces professionally checked yearly, as the AAP recommends.

- Never run a vehicle in a garage or other enclosed space.
- If the home has an attached garage, keep the door between the garage and home closed.
4. Reduce lead exposure safely
In the United States, homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. If you live in one, ask your local health department about testing—especially when paint is peeling or repairs are planned. Rules and testing resources differ by location.

Prevent lead dust during cleaning and repairs
Disturbing lead paint can increase lead dust. Use a certified contractor for lead-safe repair work rather than sanding or otherwise disturbing suspect paint yourself. Damp-clean floors and surfaces, and wash children’s hands and toys.

Use safer water practices
Use cold tap water for drinking, cooking, and preparing infant formula. A water filter is relevant only if it is certified for lead reduction; check that the certification matches that specific hazard.
Ask about testing if exposure is suspected
If you think a child may have been exposed to lead, discuss a blood test with the child’s pediatrician. For testing or remediation options, contact local health agencies.

5. Match injury prevention to your child’s age
Children’s abilities and behavior change quickly, so choose safeguards for what a child can do now and revisit them as new skills develop. The AAP’s injury-prevention guidance, last updated in 2022, recommends measures including:
- Anchoring unstable furniture.
- Securing medicines and dangerous household products.
- Checking floors for small objects that could pose a choking hazard.
- Using firmly mounted stair gates while children are learning to crawl and walk.
For babies: follow safe-sleep guidance
For infants, the AAP and CDC advise placing babies on their backs for sleep, on a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet. Keep soft bedding out of the sleep area. These recommendations apply to babies; they are not a substitute for the age-specific safeguards needed as children grow.
