An Apple device can miss the newest major operating system and still receive security updates. To check where yours stands, identify its exact model and installed OS, then compare them with Apple’s current compatibility and security-release listings. The terms current, still patched, and neither below are a practical framework—not official Apple support labels.
What do “current,” “still patched,” and “neither” mean?
These categories answer two different questions: can the device install the latest major OS, and if not, is Apple listing a security update for the older branch it runs?

“Neither” is an observation, not an Apple designation or proof that the device is formally unsupported. A release listing is a snapshot: it does not promise a fixed future support period or protection from every security risk.

Is my iPhone still getting security updates?
Check the exact iPhone model, its iOS version, and Apple’s security releases page. Look at both the newest major release and any security updates listed for older iOS branches, including the “Available for” device details. A purchase year alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

For a concrete snapshot, on October 7, 2026, Apple listed iOS 27.0.1 as the latest release and also listed iOS 26.7.1. Its iOS 27.0.1 entry, dated September 28, 2026, lists iPhone 11 and later as compatible. These are dated release details, not a forecast of which models will receive future updates; check Apple’s live list before acting.
Older iPhones can receive branch-specific protection
Apple’s April 2, 2026 guidance about specific reported web attacks said updates for iOS 15 and iOS 16 had been released on March 11, 2026, to extend protection to older devices unable to update to the latest iOS. Apple said devices running iOS 13 or iOS 14 needed to update to iOS 15 to receive those protections. This example shows that older-branch patching can happen; it does not establish ongoing updates for every old iPhone or cover every threat. Can my old Mac still be updated?
Use the Mac’s Software Update and compare its model with Apple’s compatibility information for macOS versions. Apple says Software Update shows only software compatible with your Mac model. If it reports that the Mac is up to date, that means no newer compatible software is being offered there; it does not by itself mean the Mac runs the newest macOS.

In the October 7, 2026 snapshot, Apple listed macOS 27.0.1 as the latest release, alongside security releases for macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 and Sequoia 15.8.1. That illustrates how a newer major version and updates for older branches can coexist; your Mac’s exact model determines which releases it can install.
How do I check my Apple device’s update status?
- Identify the exact model. Find the model name or generation in the device’s settings or system information. Do not rely only on the year you bought it.
- Record the installed OS version. Note the full version number so you can compare it with releases for the correct operating-system branch.
- Check Apple’s release index. On Apple’s security releases page, find the latest major release and any listed updates for older branches. Check the release date and “Available for” details.
- For a Mac, check Software Update and compatibility. Use Apple’s macOS update instructions and linked compatibility information. The updater filters out software that is not compatible with your model.
- Install a compatible update. Back up before a Mac software upgrade, then follow the device’s update process. Apple advises Mac users to use the latest macOS compatible with their model.
- If nothing appears, verify before drawing a conclusion. Recheck the model and OS against Apple’s compatibility and release information. Describe the result as “no compatible update is currently listed,” rather than treating age or an updater message as a formal support cutoff.
What’s the difference between an OS update and a security patch?
A major OS update moves a device to a newer operating-system generation and may introduce features as well as fixes. A security update can address vulnerabilities in a branch that is older than the current major release; it does not necessarily bring the device’s features or OS generation up to date.

Apple’s update histories distinguish releases that include security fixes from releases that also describe feature additions. For example, Apple’s iOS 18 update history documents the contents of individual releases. A patch is useful, but it is not a blanket guarantee of safety or a substitute for checking the device’s remaining compatibility.

Base the decision on what the exact device can install and what you need it to do—not age alone. A device that cannot move to the latest major release may still have a listed security update, while an old device without a compatible update may continue to work but carry increasing limitations as apps, services, and security fixes move on.

- Check the security-release list: Is a compatible update listed for the installed branch or device family?
- Check app and service needs: Do the apps and services you rely on still support the device’s OS?
- Consider your risk and use: Is the device used for sensitive accounts, work, or browsing that makes current security support especially important?
- Compare a replacement against your needs: Apple’s compatibility list can tell you which models install a release, but it does not establish price, availability, condition, or future support duration for a particular device.
Apple’s security-release page says, “Keeping your software up to date is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your Apple product’s security.” Treat that as a reason to install compatible updates, not as evidence that every older device has a guaranteed support lifespan.
