To deep-clean a phone safely, power it off, remove its case, and start with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Use moisture or disinfectant only when the instructions for your exact phone model allow it; never spray liquid onto the device, scrub grit across the display, or submerge the phone.
What to do before cleaning
- Power off the phone and unplug its charging cable and other accessories.
- Remove the case so grime is not trapped between it and the phone. Clean the case separately according to its material and the case maker’s directions.
- Check the screen for grit or sand. If you see debris, avoid rubbing it across the display; use a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber or lens cloth and wipe gently.
Clean the phone in stages
Start dry for dust and fingerprints
For routine dust, fingerprints, and smudges, gently wipe the screen and exterior with a clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth. Apple, Google, and Samsung all recommend a soft or lint-free cloth for routine cleaning. Avoid rough cloths, abrasive materials, and forceful or repeated scrubbing.

Add limited moisture only if your model’s guidance permits it
If marks remain, follow the instructions for the exact phone model rather than assuming one manufacturer’s advice applies to another. Apple recommends a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Google’s Pixel guidance distinguishes between a slightly damp cloth for color transfer and screen wipes or eyeglasses cleaner for screen grime. Samsung permits a small amount of distilled water on a cloth for stubborn dirt. In every case, do not spray cleaner directly on the phone, and keep moisture and soap out of ports and other openings.

Disinfect only according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Ordinary cleaning and disinfection are different tasks. The permitted products vary by maker, and the concentrations below are manufacturer instructions—not comparative test results or a guarantee that a phone is germ-free.

These instructions are not interchangeable, and a support page may change. Check the current guidance for your exact model and region before using a wipe or cleaner. Samsung says it cannot guarantee the efficacy of its cleaning guidance and that results may vary.
Protect the screen, finish, and openings
- Do not grind grit into the display. Inspect for sand or debris first, then wipe gently with a clean cloth.
- Do not spray or pour liquid onto the phone. Apply an approved liquid to a cloth only when the manufacturer’s directions call for it, and keep it away from openings.
- Avoid abrasives and aggressive rubbing. Apple says an iPhone’s fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating repels oil, and warns that cleaning products and abrasive materials diminish that coating and may scratch the phone. The coating also wears over time through normal use.
- Skip compressed air, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, solvents, and unapproved household cleaners. The manufacturers’ exclusions differ, so check the model-specific instructions rather than treating a product as safe for every phone.
- Do not wash or submerge a phone because it is water-resistant. Google’s Pixel 9 safety guide says IP68 protection applies when the device leaves the factory and can diminish or be lost through normal wear, repair, disassembly, or damage. That is model-specific guidance, but it is a reason not to treat water resistance as permission to wash a phone.
- Do not peel a foldable’s display film. Google warns Pixel Fold owners not to pick at display edges or try to remove the protective film. For another foldable, check its exact model guidance.
Clean the case separately
A phone’s surface-cleaning instructions may not be suitable for its case. Samsung specifically warns that its phone cleaning method may damage plastic, rubber, or leather accessories. Follow the case maker’s directions for the case material instead of applying the phone’s disinfectant method by default.
