Keep it if its Wi-Fi covers your home, its features meet your needs, and it receives security updates. Consider separate equipment when you can identify a specific shortfall, such as weak coverage, a routing feature you need, or a preference to manage your own network. A new router does not, by itself, make your internet plan faster.
First identify what your ISP installed
The word “router” is often used for different equipment. A modem connects your home to the provider’s coaxial, telephone, or fiber service and provides an Ethernet connection. A router manages the home network and typically supplies Wi-Fi. Many providers combine both functions in one gateway. Google’s modem guide explains the distinction and notes that a separate Wi-Fi device may need the gateway configured to make it the primary router.

Check the device label, model documentation, and your provider’s instructions before buying replacement hardware. If you have a gateway, a retail router may be added behind it, but replacing the gateway entirely is a different matter: compatibility depends on the connection type, service, and provider requirements.
When keeping the ISP router makes sense
- Coverage is good where you use Wi-Fi. If devices connect reliably in the rooms that matter, replacing the router may solve no real problem.
- You do not need extra network controls. The provider’s settings and features may be sufficient for your household.
- You want the provider to support the equipment. Rental or included equipment can make troubleshooting simpler, though the precise support terms vary by provider.
- Its update and security practices are clear. The Federal Trade Commission advises users with ISP-supplied routers to ask whether the provider sends automatic updates and to secure router credentials and settings. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance.
Ownership alone is not a security verdict: the available guidance does not establish that all ISP routers are insecure or that every retail router receives better updates. Find out who supplies firmware updates for your particular device and how to check whether it is current.

When a separate router or mesh system may help
Replacing or supplementing the provider device is worth considering when you can name the problem you expect it to solve. For example, you may have Wi-Fi dead zones, need a network feature the gateway does not offer, or want one separate device to manage routing and wireless settings. A mesh system may be an option for a coverage problem; it is not an automatic fix for slow broadband service.
Before buying, check whether the issue is Wi-Fi or the internet connection itself. A separate router can change how your home network operates, but a newer model does not directly increase the speed of your subscribed service. Any improvement depends on the specific bottleneck and setup; do not assume a speed gain simply because the hardware is new.

Understand bridge mode and double NAT before connecting another router
If both the gateway and a new router perform routing, the setup can create double NAT. That can complicate gaming, port forwarding, remote access, or VPN connections. Bridge mode disables routing on the gateway so the separate router or mesh system can manage the network instead. TP-Link’s July 8, 2026 guide cautions that “Bridge mode is not a universal upgrade.” It is relevant when routing conflicts exist or when you want the separate device to manage the network—not a setting everyone needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBridge mode may not be available on every gateway, and the provider may restrict access to it. It often disables the gateway’s Wi-Fi, so confirm that the separate router or mesh system will provide the coverage you need before changing settings. The exact effects and setup depend on the gateway and ISP; follow their model-specific directions rather than treating general instructions as universal. See TP-Link’s bridge-mode guide.

Compare rental and purchase terms—not just the hardware
Renting or using equipment included with service can reduce setup work and may keep provider support in scope, but check your bill for recurring equipment charges and understand what happens if you change or cancel service. Buying can offer more choice, but requires an upfront purchase and compatibility checks; provider support may not cover self-purchased equipment. BroadbandNow’s guide, last updated December 8, 2025, describes these general trade-offs, but it is not a quote for your provider or plan.

A practical decision before you replace anything
- Describe the problem. Note where Wi-Fi fails, which devices or activities are affected, or which feature you need. If there is no concrete shortfall, replacement may not be worthwhile.
- Identify the equipment. Confirm whether you have a modem, standalone router, or combined gateway, and record the model.
- Check your provider’s options. Verify equipment compatibility, bridge-mode or other recommended settings, support boundaries, and return requirements before changing the setup.
- Compare total terms. Weigh your actual rental or included-equipment terms against the purchase cost and the work of managing updates and troubleshooting yourself.
- Change one thing at a time. If you add a router, use the configuration recommended for your gateway. Confirm its Wi-Fi coverage before disabling gateway Wi-Fi or enabling bridge mode.
