Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes. Ubuntu Touch is still maintained by the UBports community, and its current release is Ubuntu Touch 24.04-2.0, based on Ubuntu 24.04. That does not make it a straightforward replacement for an Android or iPhone: support varies by exact device, important apps may be missing, and installing the OS can erase the phone. It is best suited to people willing to check compatibility and accept a more hands-on mobile experience.
Who maintains Ubuntu Touch today?
Ubuntu Touch is a community-maintained mobile operating system. Canonical stopped official development in April 2017; UBports took up ongoing development and describes regular over-the-air releases. See the UBports FAQ and its Ubuntu Touch 24.04-2.0 announcement.

UBports calls Ubuntu Touch a “privacy and freedom-respecting mobile operating system.” That is the project’s own description, not an independent audit. The sources cited here do not establish a comparative security rating, an independent telemetry assessment, or a guarantee that every security issue receives a particular update timeline.
What does “supported” mean for a phone?
UBports’ device portal reports 111 supported devices in 2026. That count is an inventory, not a promise that all 111 offer the same release, polish, or working features. The portal provides filters for release, development stage, and features; UBports also advises checking the exact model and the functions you need. Start with the UBports device portal.
#1 Best Overall
The portal’s live listings can change, so verify the exact model variant and release line before buying or installing. “Supported” by itself does not tell you whether a specific camera, carrier feature, or app workflow will work on your handset.
Fairphone 5 is UBports’ strongest named recommendation
UBports’ reference-device page, last updated in June 2026, identifies the Fairphone 5 as its best-supported device at that time. It also says the Fairphone 4 and 5 support Display Out over USB-C. These are UBports’ assessments; they do not establish identical support across every regional variant or carrier. Check the live listing before choosing a Fairphone 5 or any other handset. See the UBports reference-device page.

Will Ubuntu Touch work as your everyday phone?
The answer depends less on the operating system’s name than on the specific features and apps you depend on. Before moving your primary phone, check each essential task on the exact model and release: calls, mobile data, GPS, camera, and any hardware-specific functions. Also check carrier compatibility in your country. UBports flags possible VoLTE communication issues in North America, and it does not support dual booting.
Native apps are a meaningful limitation
UBports says its native app catalog is smaller than those of mainstream phone platforms and notes that many popular apps have no Ubuntu Touch version, including banking apps. It points to Morph Browser for web access and Waydroid, an Android app compatibility layer, as possible workarounds. Neither guarantees that a particular bank, work-authentication tool, transit app, streaming service, or carrier app will work: browser access may lack app features, and Waydroid compatibility is specific to the app and device.

What changed in Ubuntu Touch 24.04-2.0?
The 24.04-2.0 feature update is based on Ubuntu 24.04. UBports says Morph Browser’s engine moved from Chromium 87 to Chromium 134; the release also adds direct document printing and an installer for Widevine, a DRM implementation used by some services. UBports says video playback still runs in software and may use more power. These details do not establish compatibility with any particular streaming service.
The release is not available for every device in the supported-device inventory: UBports says storage requirements limit its rollout and names the devices receiving it in the release announcement. Check the portal for your handset’s current release availability.

What to check before buying or installing
- Confirm the exact model and variant on the device portal, along with its current release and development stage.
- Check feature status for the camera, calls, mobile data, GPS, and any hardware you rely on; confirm carrier and VoLTE compatibility in your region.
- Test whether your essential apps and services work through native apps, Morph Browser, or Waydroid rather than assuming compatibility.
- Read the device-specific stock-ROM and bootloader requirements, and make sure you can follow the required unlock and recovery steps.
- Back up data somewhere external before proceeding. UBports warns that switching from Android does not preserve existing on-device data.
How installation works—and what it can cost you
The UBports Installer offers a graphical installation route for supported devices, but preparation varies by device port. UBports’ general guidance includes unlocking the bootloader and, where specified, installing a required Android or stock-ROM version before using the installer. Follow the instructions for your exact device rather than assuming one procedure works for all models: see the installation guide and UBports Installer page.

Best Value
Is Ubuntu Touch a fit for you?
| It may suit you if… | It may not suit you if… |
|---|---|
| You value a community-maintained, control-focused alternative and are comfortable checking device support and installing an alternative OS. | You need a particular mainstream app or work workflow to function exactly as it does on Android or iOS. |
| Your exact handset has the features and release you need, and you have checked carrier compatibility. | You want a phone that works without model-specific research, bootloader preparation, or recovery planning. |
| You can tolerate a smaller native app selection and verify your must-have services in advance. | You cannot risk losing data or communication features during a transition. |
Ubuntu Touch is real and actively maintained, but “alive” is not the same as broadly interchangeable with mainstream mobile platforms. UBports’ privacy and user-control positioning may appeal to enthusiasts; practical suitability comes down to your exact device, carrier, essential apps, and willingness to manage installation tradeoffs.
