How to Fix Gmail’s “No connection” Error on the Web, Android, and iPhone

Start by checking whether other apps and websites can connect. Then use these web, Android, and iPhone steps to isolate a Gmail app, browser, sync, or service issue.

Gmail’s “No connection” message means it cannot reach the service from your device, but it does not by itself mean Gmail is down. First check whether other apps and websites can connect, then try another network. If the internet works elsewhere, use the steps below to narrow the problem to your browser, Gmail app, account sync, or a Google service incident.

Start with the quickest checks

  1. Check whether the internet works outside Gmail. Open another website or app. If those also fail, focus on the device or network before changing Gmail settings.
  2. Reconnect the device. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, or switch mobile/cellular data off and on. Restart the device and try another network if one is available.
  3. Reopen Gmail. Close and reopen the browser or Gmail app, then try again.
  4. Check for a Google service incident. Open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard and look for Gmail. Its status is live and can change; a clear dashboard does not rule out an account-specific problem.

If Wi-Fi is the only connection that fails, restarting the router may help. If the device remains unable to connect across apps and websites, contact your internet provider or the person who manages the Wi-Fi network. Google’s guidance for the “No connection” message starts with network checks and reopening Gmail or the browser. Google’s common Gmail error troubleshooting

Use the symptoms to narrow down the cause

What you see What to try next
Other apps and websites fail too Check the device’s connection, switch networks, or contact the provider or Wi-Fi host.
Gmail fails in one browser but works elsewhere Check browser support, extensions, private browsing, and cache or cookies.
Gmail fails only in the app Restart the app; on Android, check sync settings and storage.
Gmail fails on multiple devices or networks for one account Check the live status dashboard, then investigate account-specific sign-in or sync issues through Google Help.

These are useful diagnostic clues, not guarantees: more than one issue can produce similar symptoms.

Fix Gmail on the web

  1. Confirm other sites load. If they do not, resolve the connection problem first.
  2. Restart and reconnect. Restart the computer or device, toggle Wi-Fi or mobile data, and test another network. For a Wi-Fi problem, restart the router.
  3. Reopen or change the browser. Close and relaunch it. If Gmail still will not load, update to a supported browser or try a different browser.
  4. Test for browser interference. Temporarily disable extensions or add-ons, then try Gmail in a private or incognito window. If the private window works, an extension or browser setting may be involved.
  5. Clear cache and cookies if needed. This can resolve some browser loading problems, but it is not a universal fix for “No connection.” Clearing cookies may sign you out of websites.
  6. Try another device. If Gmail loads on another device, the problem is more likely tied to the original browser or device. If you need access while troubleshooting, Google lists its mobile app or an email client that supports IMAP or POP as alternatives.

Google’s browser guidance covers loading issues and certain browser errors; extensions, private browsing, and cache or cookie checks are troubleshooting steps, not proof that the exact connection message is caused by the browser. Use the latest version of Gmail in your browser

Fix Gmail sync problems on Android

  1. Reconnect and reopen Gmail. Apply the network checks above, then close and reopen the app.
  2. Manually sync the inbox. In Gmail, pull down on the inbox to refresh. Google says syncing can take up to 15 minutes and may take longer if the device has not been used for a while.
  3. Update Gmail and restart the device. Install available Gmail updates, then restart the phone or tablet.
  4. Confirm Gmail sync is enabled. In Gmail, open Menu > Settings, select the account, and make sure Sync Gmail is checked. Also check the device’s Google account sync settings; their names and locations vary by Android device.
  5. Check both kinds of storage. Review Google Account storage and device storage. If the Google Account has reached its storage limit, Gmail cannot send or receive messages; low device storage can prevent Gmail from syncing.
  6. Clear Gmail storage only as a late step. Google warns that clearing the app’s storage can erase drafts, signature, ringtone, and other settings. Try less disruptive checks first and be prepared to set those items up again.

Google’s sync guidance includes the manual refresh, account settings, storage checks, and app-data caution. If sync still fails after those steps, the device manufacturer may be able to help with device-specific account-sync settings. Fix sync errors with the Gmail app

Fix Gmail on iPhone or iPad

  1. Check the connection. Restart the device, toggle Wi-Fi or cellular data, and try another network.
  2. Close and reopen Gmail. If other apps connect but Gmail does not, restart the app before changing account settings.
  3. Reset the account connection only if needed. The Gmail app for iPhone and iPad does not offer a sign-out option. Google’s stated reset is to remove the Google Account through the app or device account flow, then add it again. Make sure you know the account credentials and can complete any verification before removing it; removing an account can interrupt access to its data and services on the device until it is added back.
  4. Compare app and browser access. Try Gmail in an updated browser or on another device. Google also lists a supported email client as an alternative if you need to isolate an app issue.

When to escalate

  • Several apps and sites are offline on one network: contact the internet provider or Wi-Fi host.
  • Only one browser has trouble: continue with browser updates and extension or cache checks, or use another browser while diagnosing it.
  • Android sync remains broken: after verifying Gmail and device account sync, storage, and updates, seek device-specific guidance from the manufacturer.
  • The dashboard reports a Gmail incident: wait for Google’s service to recover and recheck the live dashboard rather than repeatedly changing local settings.
  • One account fails across devices or networks: consult Google’s account and Gmail Help resources; a general connectivity check cannot resolve every account-specific issue.
