A Netflix connection error does not, on its own, mean Netflix is down. It usually means the device cannot reach Netflix, and the cause may be the device, your Wi-Fi or wired network, an internet provider, or a network restriction. Compare Netflix with other apps and devices first, then follow the steps below to narrow it down.
Is there a network issue with Netflix?
Possibly, but an error message is not proof of a Netflix-wide outage. Netflix says “We’re unable to connect you to Netflix. Please try again or visit www.netflix.com/tvhelp for guidance.” That message describes a connection problem between the device and Netflix; it does not identify which part of the connection is failing. See Netflix’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

Start by checking whether another internet-connected app works on the same device, then see whether another device on the same network can use Netflix. If other apps also fail, look first at the device or network connection. If only Netflix has trouble, that narrows the possibilities but still does not confirm a service outage. Netflix’s device-specific instructions can vary, so note the exact message or code before troubleshooting.

How to tell whether the problem is your device, network, or Netflix
| What you find | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix and other internet apps fail on one device | A device connection or local network issue is more likely than a Netflix-only playback problem. | Check the device’s network settings or run its network test, if available. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. |
| Several devices on the same Wi-Fi have trouble | A shared issue such as the router, modem, network settings, or ISP may be involved. | Restart the home network and contact the ISP if the problem persists. |
| Other apps work, but Netflix does not | The issue may be specific to Netflix access, the device’s Netflix app, or a network setting; this does not prove Netflix is down. | Record the Netflix error, restart the device and network, and follow Netflix’s instructions for that device and code. |
| Netflix works over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, or improves closer to the router | Wireless signal or coverage may be contributing. | Try improving router and device placement before considering equipment changes. |
| The problem occurs on public Wi-Fi | The network may restrict streaming video. | Ask the network operator about its streaming policy or try a private connection. |
These comparisons are clues rather than definitive tests. Netflix recommends checking other apps and devices and, when needed, testing the connection to Netflix with Fast.com. A provider may also have local outage information.

What to do when Netflix will not connect
- Write down the exact error. Note the wording or code, the device model, and whether it is using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a hotspot, or another connection. Netflix’s fixes differ by device and error.
- Test another app on the same device. If it also cannot get online, use the device’s network test or settings, if available, to check connectivity.
- Check another device on the same network. If several devices have trouble, investigate shared network equipment or ask the ISP. If only one device is affected, check its connection and software and consult the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Restart the device and home network. Follow Netflix’s restart instructions for the affected device. Its general sequence is to turn off the device, unplug the modem and router, wait, reconnect the network equipment, then try Netflix again. The suggested waits in the instructions are troubleshooting timings, and the applicable steps can vary by equipment.
- Consider the kind of network you are using. Public Wi-Fi may block video streaming. A mobile hotspot or satellite connection may not provide enough speed for streaming reliably; check the service and connection conditions rather than assuming Netflix is at fault. Netflix discusses these connection limits in its streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- Use the official steps for DNS-related errors. Netflix defines NW-2-5 as a case where “your device took too long to connect to Netflix.” Incorrect DNS settings can be one cause. For supported game consoles, Netflix’s NW-2-5 instructions include restoring DNS to automatic. Avoid changing DNS settings unless you know how to restore the original configuration, and use the instructions for your specific device.
- Contact your ISP if the network symptoms continue. Ask it to check for a local outage, modem or router problems, DNS, or other network configuration issues. Explain whether one device or several are affected and whether the streaming device uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet. After any fix, retry Netflix and test the connection to Netflix with Fast.com.
Why a Netflix connection error can happen
Weak Wi-Fi or a shared home-network problem
A weak wireless signal, router placement, or a modem/router issue can prevent a device from reaching streaming services reliably. Try moving the device and router closer together and reducing obstructions. If several devices are affected, ask the ISP to help assess the router and connection before replacing equipment. Netflix does not recommend a particular router model, and buying one will not resolve an ISP outage, a public-network restriction, or a Netflix-side issue.
Public-network restrictions or limited connection capacity
Schools, hotels, workplaces, and other public networks may limit streaming. Hotspots and satellite connections can also have speed or reliability constraints. If other services work but Netflix does not on one of these networks, the network’s policy or capacity may matter; test on a private connection if one is available.

DNS or other device-specific settings
DNS helps a device find the servers it needs to reach. Incorrect settings can interfere with Netflix access, and NW-2-5 is one error for which Netflix provides device-specific DNS guidance. Do not apply console steps to a different device; use the official instructions for the device showing the error.
When to ask the ISP for help
Contact your internet provider when multiple devices on the same home network have trouble, network tests fail, or restarting equipment has not restored access. Give the provider concrete details: the error text or code, which devices are affected, whether other apps work, and whether each device connects through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Ask it to check for an area outage, line or modem/router issues, DNS, and network configuration.

If other apps and devices work but Netflix remains unavailable, use Netflix’s help instructions for the exact device and error. Netflix’s guidance and device steps may change; it does not establish whether Netflix or an ISP has a live outage at the moment you see an error. Check the provider’s local outage information and retest the connection.
