Yes—if you already own a disc-equipped Xbox Series X and HDR10 playback meets your needs. It can play DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays after you install the Blu-ray Player app. It is less compelling as a movie player if you want Dolby Vision from discs, a conventional remote or a dedicated player’s processing features. Check the model first: the Series X digital edition has no disc drive.
Can the Xbox Series X play Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray discs?
Microsoft says the Xbox Series X can play movie DVDs, Blu-ray discs and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. To play them, download the Blu-ray Player app from the console’s Store. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X specifications list a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive for the Carbon Black and Galaxy Black editions, while also listing a separate digital edition. Confirm that your console has an optical drive before buying movie discs for it.

Microsoft’s Xbox Wire FAQ, in Portuguese, says in translation that the console can play movie DVDs, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs once you download the Blu-ray Player app from the Store. The app is a necessary part of disc playback, not an optional enhancement.
What does the Xbox Series X offer for movie playback?
HDR10 for discs, not Dolby Vision
The key limitation for some home theaters is HDR format support. TechRadar describes Xbox UHD Blu-ray playback as HDR10 and says Dolby Vision on Xbox applies to streaming, not disc playback. The console’s ability to support Dolby Vision in gaming or streaming does not mean it outputs Dolby Vision from a 4K movie disc. Microsoft’s Dolby Vision announcement discusses gaming and movies or streaming, but does not claim UHD Blu-ray disc support.

Audio depends on the rest of your system
Microsoft lists Dolby TrueHD with Atmos among the Series X’s sound capabilities. That specification does not guarantee the same result in every setup: the disc soundtrack, console output settings, receiver or soundbar, and connected equipment all matter. Check those components and settings if a particular audio format is important to you.
Controller navigation instead of a movie remote
The Xbox uses its controller for playback navigation. A standalone player is more likely to suit viewers who want a conventional remote as part of a dedicated movie-watching setup; Tom’s Guide describes the Panasonic DP-UB820 as including one.

Xbox Series X vs. a standalone 4K Blu-ray player
| Consideration | Disc-equipped Xbox Series X | Standalone player example |
|---|---|---|
| Disc formats | DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray, with the Blu-ray Player app installed (Microsoft) | Model-specific; check the player’s specifications |
| HDR formats on discs | HDR10; TechRadar says Dolby Vision is for streaming, not Xbox disc playback | Panasonic DP-UB820 supports HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision (Tom’s Guide) |
| Playback controls | Navigate with the Xbox controller | Tom’s Guide describes the DP-UB820 as supplied with a dedicated remote |
| Reported 100GB UHD disc issues | Tom’s Guide reports some user complaints involving certain triple-layer discs; not all discs are affected | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| Other use | Combines disc playback with Xbox gaming and other console functions | Designed for disc playback; capabilities vary by model |
The Panasonic DP-UB820 is a feature comparison, not a universal recommendation: availability and specifications can vary by market and model. Tom’s Guide describes its HDR format support and processing features in its DP-UB820 review. Check the current model specifications where you live before choosing a player.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAre 100GB 4K Blu-ray discs a problem?
Tom’s Guide reports that some Xbox users have encountered problems with certain 100GB, triple-layer UHD discs, but says the issue does not affect all discs of that size. That is a reported playback concern, not evidence that the Xbox categorically cannot play 100GB discs. If you own a large collection of triple-layer discs, take this uncertainty into account rather than assuming every title will fail.

When is the Xbox a good enough Blu-ray player?
- Keep using it if you own a disc-equipped model, have installed the Blu-ray Player app, and your discs play reliably.
- It is a sensible all-in-one choice if you also want the console for gaming and HDR10 is sufficient for your display and movie collection.
- Compare dedicated players if Dolby Vision from 4K discs, a standard movie remote or dedicated playback processing is important to you.
- Do not buy the digital Series X for discs: that edition has no optical drive.
