Indian shares extended gains on October 6, 2026, with bank stocks and Reliance Industries among the reported supports. The New Indian Express described an early-session rise; by the close, the Sensex was up 0.95% and the Nifty 0.98%. Lower crude prices and positive global cues were cited as support, though those explanations do not establish a single cause for the move.

The New Indian Express’s October 6 early-trade report
Why were markets higher?
Contemporary reports pointed to buying in bank shares and Reliance Industries, positive global cues and easing crude prices. These are explanations offered during the session, not proof that one factor alone caused the gains. Lower oil prices can ease cost pressures for some businesses and support sentiment in an oil-importing economy, but that general relationship does not establish the reason for a particular day’s price move.
The crude figures changed during the session. The New Indian Express cited WTI at about USD 89–90 a barrel and Brent at USD 100.5 in its early-trade report. PTI/ThePrint later said Brent fell 1.70% to USD 98.59 a barrel and attributed some of the risk-on mood to the decline. PTI/ThePrint, October 6, 2026
There were countervailing risks. Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 4,699.14 crore on Monday, according to exchange data cited by both reports; this was the previous session’s flow, not an October 6 closing figure. The New Indian Express also quoted the US 10-year Treasury yield at about 5.31%. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, said, “Indian equity markets are expected to remain broadly steady, with easing crude prices providing some support to market sentiment.” Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, said that positive overnight global cues could support the opening, while the Treasury yield could limit follow-through by keeping foreign flows and emerging-market valuations under pressure. These were analyst views, not confirmed explanations or forecasts. The New Indian Express, October 6, 2026

What the one-day rise does—and does not—show
The October 6 numbers describe one trading session. They show that the benchmarks finished higher and identify stocks and market factors reported alongside the rise; they do not establish that the rally will continue or provide a basis for predicting future returns. The Economic Times reported that an RBI policy decision was due Wednesday and cited a poll expectation of a 25-basis-point increase to 5.50%. That was an expectation at the time of publication, not a confirmed policy decision. The Economic Times, updated October 7, 2026
