Is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D Worth Buying for a Path-Traced Gaming PC?

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D can suit a premium gaming PC, but it does not create path-tracing performance. Prioritize the GPU, then weigh CPU needs and total build cost.

It can be, but not because it makes path tracing faster by itself. Path tracing is primarily a GPU workload. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a strong fit for a new AM5 gaming build, high-refresh play, or games that put substantial load on the CPU; for a path-traced 1440p or 4K system, prioritize a capable graphics card first. Buy this processor if its broader gaming performance and price make sense for your build—not on the promise of a universal path-tracing frame-rate boost.

What the 9800X3D contributes to a path-traced gaming PC

Path tracing is a graphics-rendering technique, so the graphics card does most of the work that produces the path-traced image. NVIDIA, for example, describes RTX 50-series path-tracing capability through its Blackwell GPU architecture, including fourth-generation RT cores and fifth-generation Tensor cores. Its performance examples may also use DLSS upscaling and frame generation, so a quoted frame rate should be read alongside the GPU, resolution, settings, and whether generated frames are included. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 specifications and features illustrate the GPU-side technologies involved.

The CPU still matters: it runs game logic and helps prepare and deliver frames. If a game or a high-refresh target makes the processor the limiting part of the system, a faster CPU can improve performance or frame-time consistency. But a faster CPU cannot replace the GPU capacity needed to render a demanding path-traced scene. At higher resolutions, the graphics workload can become the limiting factor even when the CPU is powerful.

What the available benchmarks show

The evidence supports a conditional recommendation, not a blanket claim that the 9800X3D raises path-tracing frame rates. The cited tests cover different games, graphics cards, settings, and resolutions; none establishes a general 9800X3D advantage across matched full-path-tracing workloads.

Test Reported result What it means for this decision
Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p RT Ultra with DLSS Balanced; PC Gamer’s 2026 comparison using an RTX 4070 The 9800X3D and 9850X3D each averaged 112 FPS; their reported 1% lows were 76 and 78 FPS, respectively. Their overall gaming index scores were also effectively level: 17,052 and 17,054. This is one game and configuration, and RT Ultra is not automatically full path tracing. It shows little difference between these two CPUs in this particular test, not a universal result. PC Gamer’s 9850X3D review also reports RTX 5090 testing intended to reduce GPU limits, with selected games showing about a 2.5% increase for the newer CPU at best.
Gears of War E-Day, 1080p High; Tom’s Hardware test dated October 1, 2026 The 9800X3D delivered 42% higher performance than the Ryzen 5 7600X in this unusually CPU-heavy game test. This demonstrates that a modern game can be strongly CPU-bound, but it is not evidence of a similar gain in path tracing or in games generally. Tom’s Hardware’s test characterizes the title as an unusual CPU-heavy case.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, Ultra Ray Tracing with quality upscaling; TechSpot GPU comparison At 1080p, RTX 5090 and RTX 4090 results were roughly similar, likely because the test was CPU-limited. At 1440p, the CPU limit was absent and the RTX 5090 was 22% faster. This is a GPU comparison, not a test proving a special benefit from the 9800X3D. It shows why resolution and bottlenecks change benchmark results. TechSpot’s RTX 5090 review reports the comparison.

These results answer different questions. The Gears of War E-Day result is evidence that CPU scaling can be substantial in an unusually CPU-heavy game. The Cyberpunk CPU comparison suggests little difference between two X3D processors in its stated test configuration. The RTX comparison shows that a 1080p GPU test can hit a CPU limit that disappears at 1440p. None should be translated into a promised path-tracing uplift for a different game, GPU, resolution, or quality setting.

9800X3D specifications and platform requirements

AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as an AM5 desktop processor with 8 cores, 16 threads, a 4.7 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.2 GHz, 96 MB of L3 cache, and a 120 W default TDP. Its specifications list A620, B650/B650E, B840/B850, X670/X670E, and X870/X870E chipsets as supported. Check the exact motherboard’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before purchase. AMD’s product specifications say a thermal solution is not included and recommend liquid cooling for optimal performance, so include cooler cost in the build budget.

When it makes sense to buy—and when it does not

It is a sensible choice if

  • You are building a new AM5 system and want a high-end gaming CPU across a broad mix of titles, rather than optimizing only for path tracing.
  • You target high refresh rates or play CPU-heavy games where the processor can constrain frame delivery.
  • The graphics card already fits the path-traced resolution and settings you want, and the CPU premium does not force a downgrade that would hurt that goal.
  • You value strong CPU-limited performance and are comfortable budgeting for a separate cooler.

Look at less expensive or different options if

  • Your main goal is path-traced 1440p or 4K and the extra CPU spend would come out of the GPU budget.
  • Your games and settings are mostly GPU-limited, so a faster processor is unlikely to address the system’s main constraint.
  • You already own a suitable AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory: compare the actual CPU upgrade cost with alternatives rather than treating the processor as a whole-system purchase.
  • You are choosing between the 9800X3D and a newer X3D model: compare current prices and relevant game benchmarks, since the cited PC Gamer comparison found near-identical results in its overall index and Cyberpunk test.

A practical way to decide

  1. Choose the target first. Write down the games, resolution, graphics settings, and refresh-rate goal. “Path tracing” alone is not a complete performance target.
  2. Set the GPU budget. Make sure the graphics card can handle the selected path-tracing workload. Consider upscaling and frame generation as separate settings, and distinguish rendered frames from generated frames when comparing published results.
  3. Check whether the CPU matters in your games. Prefer benchmarks for the exact game and similar settings. Look at average FPS and 1% lows where available; do not apply results from an unusually CPU-heavy title to every game.
  4. Compare complete costs at current prices. Include the CPU, any motherboard and DDR5 memory you need, a suitable cooler, and the GPU. AMD’s 2024 launch price is not a substitute for a current quote.
  5. Verify compatibility. Confirm the motherboard’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before buying the 9800X3D.

Verdict

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is worth considering for a premium all-round gaming PC when its current price fits, particularly for a new AM5 build, high-refresh gaming, or CPU-heavy titles. It is not a path-tracing upgrade in itself. For a system built mainly around demanding path-traced play, secure the right GPU first, then pay for the 9800X3D only if its broader gaming strengths justify the cost.
