NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 Alternatives: AMD MI300X, MI350P and Helios Compared

The closest AMD comparison to NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 is Helios, a rack-scale system AMD says is powered by MI455X—not MI300X. MI300X is an individual accelerator, so comparing it with a 72-GPU rack means accounting for the server or rack around it, including CPUs, networking, interconnect, cooling and software. The right alternative depends on whether you are choosing a complete rack, adding accelerators to existing infrastructure or evaluating a particular workload.

Which alternatives are comparable to Vera Rubin NVL72?

Start by separating the comparison into two levels. NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 is a rack-scale system: NVIDIA specifies 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs in a rack. AMD MI300X and MI350P are accelerator products; their system-level performance depends on the servers and infrastructure in which they are deployed. AMD’s Helios is the more direct rack-scale alternative in this group, and AMD identifies it as powered by MI455X GPUs.

  • Compare rack with rack: NVL72 and Helios are the relevant system-scale options. Compare complete configurations, including compute, memory, interconnect, networking, power and cooling.
  • Compare accelerators within a server: MI300X or MI350P should be assessed in a specified host and accelerator configuration. A single card’s specifications do not describe a whole rack.
  • Compare for a workload: Match the model, context length, workload, precision, software and deployment constraints before treating a performance figure as meaningful.

That distinction is essential to both “NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 alternatives” and “AMD MI300X vs NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72”: the latter is a useful search phrase, but it is not a like-for-like product comparison.

What do the published specifications say?

The figures below are vendor-published specifications or claims. Rack totals are not per-GPU specifications, and accelerator-card figures are not rack totals.

NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 Rack-scale system 20.7 TB HBM4 across the rack; 1,400 TB/s aggregate GPU memory bandwidth; 216 TB/s NVLink bandwidth 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs. NVIDIA lists NVFP4 inference at 3,600 PFLOPS (sparse) and NVFP4 training at 2,520 PFLOPS (dense).
AMD Instinct MI300X Accelerator 192 GB HBM3 and 5.3 TB/s peak theoretical memory bandwidth per accelerator 304 compute units. AMD positions the MI300 series for generative AI and high-performance computing.
AMD Instinct MI350P PCIe accelerator 144 GB HBM3E and up to 4 TB/s peak theoretical memory bandwidth AMD positions it for generative and agentic AI in existing infrastructure.
AMD Helios, powered by MI455X Rack-scale solution Not stated in the cited AMD portfolio page AMD describes Helios as a rack-scale solution; its cited comparison is a vendor-calculated peak-theoretical performance claim, not a matched workload benchmark.

When might MI300X or MI350P be a better fit?

MI300X: evaluate the accelerator in its intended server

MI300X gives infrastructure planners a per-accelerator memory capacity and peak theoretical bandwidth to assess against model and serving requirements. Those figures alone do not establish how many cards a workload needs, what throughput it will deliver, or how its performance compares with an NVL72 rack. For a meaningful comparison, specify the host system, number of accelerators, interconnect topology, software stack and workload.

MI350P: consider a PCIe path for existing infrastructure

AMD positions MI350P as a PCIe card for bringing generative and agentic AI into existing infrastructure. That makes it a different decision from adopting an integrated rack-scale platform: the question is whether a compatible existing environment can meet the workload’s compute, memory, power, cooling and networking needs. Its 144 GB HBM3E and up-to-4-TB/s peak theoretical bandwidth are card specifications, not a claim of equivalence to NVL72.

How should Helios performance claims be interpreted?

AMD says Helios is expected to offer up to 15% better OCP MXFP4 peak theoretical performance than NVL72’s NVFP4 dense figure. AMD attributes this comparison to its Performance Labs calculations from June 2026 and notes that system-manufacturer configurations may vary. It is a vendor projection, and the compared precision labels differ; it should not be read as proof that Helios will be faster on a particular model or customer workload.

NVIDIA’s own performance figures are also bounded vendor claims. For a specified Kimi-K2-Thinking setup with 32K input and 8K output sequence lengths, NVIDIA says NVL72 provides up to 10 times the inference throughput per watt and one-tenth the cost per million tokens compared with GB200 NVL72. NVIDIA says NVL72 can train a large mixture-of-experts model using one-fourth as many GPUs as GB200 NVL72 under its stated model, token and timeframe comparison. NVIDIA labels the page’s LLM performance subject to change. These claims compare NVIDIA systems under stated scenarios; they do not establish a general advantage over AMD or predict results for every deployment. See NVIDIA’s NVL72 product page.

The cited material does not establish independent, matched benchmarks that identify a workload-specific winner between NVL72, MI300X, MI350P and Helios. Vendor peak figures can help narrow a shortlist, but they are not substitutes for measurements using the buyer’s model, software and target configuration.

  • Boost Clock: Up to 2655 MHz
  • Workload and precision: Distinguish training from inference, identify the datatype used, and check whether a quoted result is dense or sparse. Do not compare peak figures with different precision labels as if they measured the same task.
  • Model and context: Record model architecture and size, input and output sequence lengths, batch or concurrency assumptions, and target latency or throughput. Memory needs can change materially with these choices.
  • Memory: Compare usable accelerator memory per device and total system memory, along with memory bandwidth. Keep per-card figures separate from rack aggregates.
  • Interconnect and networking: Check how accelerators communicate within a server and across the system, plus the network fabric and topology needed for the intended workload. Rack-level bandwidth is not interchangeable with per-card bandwidth.
  • Software and migration: Confirm framework, library and model support; determine what needs to be ported or retuned; and validate the operational tools and support available for the exact configuration.
  • Facility fit: Establish rack power, cooling, physical and networking requirements with the system supplier and facility team. A PCIe accelerator added to an existing server and an integrated rack can have very different deployment implications.
  • Commercial and delivery terms: Compare a complete bill of materials, support, deployment schedule and total cost of ownership for the relevant region. The cited product material does not establish regional purchase pricing or inventory.

For a procurement comparison, request results for the same model and workload, with precision, sequence lengths, batch/concurrency, software versions, system configuration and measurement method disclosed. Separate measured workload throughput, latency and power from theoretical peak specifications and vendor projections.

What is known about availability?

NVIDIA’s January 5, 2026 announcement said Rubin-based products would be available from partners in the second half of 2026 and named initial cloud-provider deployments: NVIDIA’s January 5, 2026 release. On March 16, 2026, NVIDIA said Vera Rubin chips were in full production and named system manufacturers expected to deliver systems, including Cisco, Dell Technologies, HPE, Lenovo, Supermicro, ASUS and GIGABYTE:
