You can run a language model locally by installing an inference app, downloading compatible model weights, and loading them on your device. On a laptop, the simplest route is a graphical app such as LM Studio; llama.cpp is a command-line and local-server option. On a phone, the model can either run on the handset—usually with a smaller compatible model—or run on a computer the phone connects to.
Choose what “local” means for your setup
There are two distinct meanings of using a model from a phone. A phone-native app performs inference on the phone itself. A phone connected to a laptop or desktop is only the interface: the other computer hosts and runs the model. Pick the second route if you want to use a model that is too demanding for the handset, and the first if inference must stay on the phone.

Check your laptop before choosing a model
Check your operating system, RAM, available storage, and—on Windows—the GPU and its dedicated VRAM. LM Studio’s current documentation lists support for Apple Silicon Macs, Windows x64/ARM, and Linux x64/ARM64. Its memory figures are vendor recommendations for LM Studio, not universal requirements for every model or runtime.
#1 Best Overall
- Apple Silicon Mac: LM Studio recommends 16 GB or more of RAM. It says an 8 GB Mac may work with smaller models and modest context sizes.
- Windows: LM Studio recommends at least 16 GB of RAM and 4 GB of dedicated GPU VRAM.
Model weights are only part of the memory demand: loading also uses memory for other parameters, and a larger context setting can require more headroom. If resources are limited, begin with a smaller model and modest context instead of assuming a large model will run smoothly. The cited guidance does not establish a universal speed or quality guarantee.
Run your first laptop chat
Graphical route: LM Studio
- Install LM Studio for your supported operating system using its official app documentation.
- Open the app’s Discover area and find a model compatible with your hardware and the app.
- Download the model, then use the model loader to load it into memory.
- Open Chat and send a prompt. If loading fails or the system struggles, try a smaller model or reduce the context setting.
Terminal or server route: llama.cpp
Choose llama.cpp if you are comfortable with command-line setup, want configuration control, or need a local server. Its documented routes use GGUF models; consult the llama.cpp project documentation for current build and run instructions. This route is less guided than an app workflow, so check the instructions for your operating system and model rather than assuming one command fits every machine.

Get model files safely and understand offline use
The inference app needs weights in a format it supports. LM Studio lists GGUF and safetensors as common formats and documents both downloading and sideloading model files. You need internet access to find or download models and runtimes, and some discovery and update functions also require it. Check each model’s own license and terms: “open-weight” does not mean every model has the same permissions.
Once the files are on the device, LM Studio says: “Once you have an LLM onto your machine, the model will run locally and you should be good to go entirely offline.” LM Studio’s Offline Operation documentation. In this local workflow, prompts stay on the device, and its document-chat feature keeps documents on the machine. These claims describe the documented LM Studio configuration; optional network services and other apps may behave differently.

This hardware configuration helps developers expand processing capabilities for larger language models and distributed computing setups.
Use a language model from your phone
Run a model on the phone itself
For native inference, install a current mobile app that supports your phone’s operating system and a model format compatible with the app. Confirm the model fits the phone’s storage and memory, and check whether the app actually runs inference on-device. Smaller models are the practical starting point; the available guidance does not establish a comprehensive current list of Android or iOS apps or their device requirements.
Connect the phone to a computer-hosted model
If you want to reach a model running on a more capable laptop or desktop, the phone can act as a client while that computer performs inference. LM Studio documents LM Link with its Locally iPhone/iPad app and describes the connection as end-to-end encrypted. In this arrangement, the model runs on the computer, not the phone. See the LM Link documentation for its current setup instructions.

Compare the four practical routes
| Route | Good fit | Check before starting |
|---|---|---|
| LM Studio desktop app | First local chat through a graphical interface | Supported operating system and hardware, model format, memory use, and whether you need a local server |
| llama.cpp | Terminal use, GGUF models, or a locally served interface/API | Command-line comfort, model format, configuration needs, and server setup |
| Phone-native model app | Experimenting with a smaller model directly on the handset | Phone and OS support, model format and size, storage, and confirmation that inference is on-device |
| Phone connected to laptop or desktop | Using a host computer’s larger model from a phone | Host availability, network and security setup, app support, and whether inference must remain on the phone |
The cited official sources describe setup and feature differences, not controlled performance tests. A speed or quality comparison would require testing the same model and quantization on the same hardware and configuration.
