1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes— for most returning players, the 2019 Nintendo Switch remake is worth buying if you want a dramatically better presentation, easier controls and useful quality-of-life tools. It is not a new Zelda adventure, however. The island, route, dungeons, puzzles, characters and conversations remain remarkably close to the Game Boy original, so the purchase makes sense as a modernized replay rather than a different campaign.
The short answer for returning players
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on Nintendo Switch preserves the original adventure while rebuilding almost everything around it. The Koholint Island map is the same, non-player characters occupy the same locations, and conversations are largely word-for-word identical. Your knowledge of the dungeon order and puzzle solutions therefore carries over directly.

What changes is how the adventure feels to play. The Switch version replaces monochrome or limited-color pixel art with a toy-box-style 3D presentation, re-records the music with new arrangements, gives the sword and shield dedicated controls, adds map pins, and lets you review important conversations. Optional Chamber Dungeons provide a separate remix mode, while compatible Zelda amiibo can unlock extra chamber content.
That makes the remake a strong recommendation for anyone who loved the original but has not played it recently, wants a version that is comfortable on a modern display, or values convenience more than novelty. It is a weaker purchase if you already own Link’s Awakening DX and mainly want a new story, a different island or a radically altered campaign. Nintendo Life awarded the remake 9/10 in 2019, while also noting technical issues that should be part of your decision.

How closely does the Switch remake follow the original?
The map and route are intentionally familiar
Nintendo Life reported that the remake’s map is identical to the original’s and that characters remain in their established places. The broad progression through Koholint Island and its dungeons is therefore not redesigned around new routes. If you remember where an item opens a passage, which cave contains a helpful clue or how the trading sequence advances, that memory remains useful.
This faithfulness is important because Link’s Awakening has always been structured around discovering connections between areas. You explore the overworld, find an item that changes what you can reach, enter a dungeon, solve its puzzles and use the dungeon reward to access the next layer of the island. The Switch remake presents that rhythm with new technology but does not replace it with an open-ended map or a different progression system.
Characters and dialogue preserve the same identity
Conversations are almost word-for-word the same according to Nintendo Life. The remake is therefore not an expanded narrative edition. It retains the odd, dreamlike tone of Koholint Island and the same sequence of story beats rather than rewriting scenes for a modern audience.
That fidelity is a benefit when you want the original’s personality intact. It is also the clearest reason not to buy the game expecting a fresh story. Even if you remember the ending, the remake’s value comes from revisiting those moments in a new audiovisual form, not from discovering a substantially different plot.
It remains an unusual Zelda adventure
TIME describes the Switch release as a remake of Nintendo’s 1993 Game Boy game and a spiritual sequel to 1991’s A Link to the Past. Link’s Awakening deliberately omits several series fixtures: there is no Zelda, Triforce, Ganon or Master Sword. The familiar Zelda pattern of exploration, item-driven progression and dungeons is still present, but the setting and cast give the game a distinct identity.
If you played the original for its strange dream logic, compact world and surprising crossovers, the remake does not dilute those qualities. If you want a conventional Hyrule story built around the usual mythology, no amount of graphical improvement changes what this game is.
What is materially better on Nintendo Switch?
Controls reduce the original’s item juggling
The Game Boy version required frequent shuffling of equipment between two buttons. Nintendo’s gameplay description explains that the remake assigns the sword and shield to their own controls, while other equipment can be assigned to X or Y. You spend less time opening the inventory simply to swap tools and more time moving through rooms, fighting and solving puzzles.
This does not redesign every interaction. The same items still solve the same kinds of problems, and you still need to recognize which ability a room expects. The improvement is in the interruption cost: actions that previously required repeated menu visits can be performed through a more natural control layout.

For a first-time player, that convenience removes friction. For a returning player, it makes a second run faster and lets you concentrate on route planning instead of remembering which two items are currently equipped.
The map adds practical navigation tools
The Switch map supports pins for marking locations. You can record a blocked entrance, an unexplored passage, a suspicious obstacle or a place that needs a later item without relying on paper notes or memory. This is especially useful in a compact world with many one-way discoveries: you can mark a location when you first encounter it and return after acquiring the necessary ability.
The underlying geography has not changed, so the map is an aid rather than a new exploration system. Players who enjoy solving the island from memory may use pins sparingly; players who dislike backtracking can use them to turn unfinished business into a visible checklist.

Nintendo also added a way to review key conversations. In the Game Boy release, a clue could be easy to forget after several hours away from the game. The remake reduces that memory burden by making important guidance available again.
Conversation review is most useful when you return after a break or when a puzzle depends on a detail delivered several scenes earlier. It does not make the puzzles automatic, and it does not replace exploration; it simply prevents a missed hint from becoming an unnecessary internet search.
The visual remake changes the atmosphere
The original’s pixel-art presentation is replaced by a miniature, toy-box-like 3D world. TIME compares the style to a Playmobil-like toy box, while Nintendo Life describes a tilt-shift presentation. Characters, houses, trees and dungeon entrances look like physical pieces arranged on a model island, with depth and lighting that the Game Boy could not provide.
This is more than a resolution increase. The remake changes the way distance, scale and animation are communicated. Familiar landmarks become dioramas, and transitions between areas feel like moving through a carefully constructed model. Some returning players love that contrast between cheerful materials and the game’s stranger story moments; others prefer the directness and visual clarity of the original sprites.

The soundtrack receives new arrangements
Nintendo says the classic soundtrack has been reborn with new arrangements. Nintendo Life describes a largely orchestrated re-recording, and TIME contrasts it with the original Game Boy MIDI bleeps. Melodies and compositions remain recognizable, but the instruments and production give them more space and texture.

Audio is therefore a meaningful part of the upgrade, not a silent background change. If you associate the original with its limited hardware sound, the Switch version may feel less raw; if you want those compositions presented with fuller instrumentation, the remake is a substantial improvement.
What new content does the remake add?
Chamber Dungeons are an optional remix mode
Chamber Dungeons let you arrange chambers from completed dungeons on objective-based grids and then play through the layouts you create. Nintendo describes the mode as a way to mix and match chambers, add puzzles, keys and bosses, and replay the resulting arrangements.
This gives the remake a construction-and-replay layer that the Game Boy release did not have. It can extend the life of a completed campaign, provide a reason to revisit rooms with different connections, and let you experiment with dungeon structure rather than only solving a fixed sequence.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →It is important to set expectations: Chamber Dungeons are not a second full campaign. They do not replace Koholint Island’s story, overworld progression or handcrafted dungeon order. Think of them as a bonus mode for players who enjoy rearranging challenges after finishing or during a return playthrough.
Amiibo can unlock additional chamber content
Nintendo UK says Zelda amiibo can unlock additional chambers. The Link amiibo specifically unlocks Shadow Link as a foe. These extras are optional and should not be treated as required purchases for the main adventure.
If you already collect compatible The Legend of Zelda amiibo, the feature gives those figures a practical use. If you do not own one, the base remake still contains its full primary campaign and Chamber Dungeons mode; buying an amiibo is an enhancement, not a prerequisite.
Are the frame-rate issues still a problem?
What contemporary reviews observed
The principal technical reservation comes from performance in the overworld. Nintendo Life reported frame-rate issues when the screen was busy. TIME said the overworld frequently slowed and stuttered in both handheld and docked modes, while indoor areas ran smoothly.

How performance affects the buying decision
For many players, brief overworld stutter is an annoyance inside an otherwise polished remake. The game remains playable, and the reported contrast with smoother indoor areas means the issue is most noticeable while traversing the island rather than inside every dungeon room.
For a player who is highly sensitive to inconsistent frame pacing, the issue can outweigh the visual upgrade. The original versions run with the limitations of their older hardware but do not present this specific modern 3D performance trade-off. Decide whether a more attractive display and better controls are worth accepting a documented, launch-era overworld caveat.
Switch remake versus Game Boy and Link’s Awakening DX
| Category | Nintendo Switch remake | Game Boy or Link’s Awakening DX |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation | Rebuilt 3D toy-box or tilt-shift visuals with modern lighting and animation. | Original pixel-art presentation and hardware-era display style. |
| Music | Classic soundtrack with new arrangements; reviewers described a largely orchestrated re-recording. | Original Game Boy sound palette and compositions as first released. |
| Controls | Sword and shield have dedicated controls; other gear can be assigned to X or Y, reducing two-button item shuffling. | Frequent swapping of items between the available buttons. |
| Navigation | Map pins help mark locations, and key conversations can be reviewed. | No equivalent Switch map-pin and conversation-review conveniences. |
| Main story | Same Koholint Island, dungeon sequence, puzzles and broad story structure; conversations are almost word-for-word identical. | The original campaign and its established route. |
| Additional content | Chamber Dungeons, plus amiibo-unlocked chambers and Shadow Link when using the Link amiibo. | No Switch Chamber Dungeons mode or those amiibo features. |
| Performance character | Indoor areas were reported to run smoothly, while 2019 reviews observed overworld slowdown or stutter. | Original hardware-era performance without the Switch remake’s 3D overworld behavior. |
| Format | Nintendo lists physical and digital versions; current availability and price depend on region, storefront and date. | Availability depends on the original hardware, cartridge or digital service you use. |
The table shows why neither version universally replaces the other. The Switch edition is the more comfortable and visually elaborate way to experience the same design. The older release remains the better fit for preserving the original pixel-art and sound, avoiding the remake’s reported overworld behavior, or replaying a copy you already own at no additional cost.
Who should buy the Switch version?
Buy it if presentation is part of the appeal
The remake is an excellent choice when you want to see Koholint Island rebuilt as a detailed miniature world and hear its music in new arrangements. The visual style is a deliberate reinterpretation rather than a neutral upscale, so it offers a different atmosphere even when the route is familiar.
Buy it if convenience matters on a second run
Dedicated sword and shield controls, two assignable equipment buttons, map pins and conversation review address the small interruptions that accumulate during a replay. These changes are particularly valuable if you remember the adventure but not every clue, or if you prefer to keep your route organized without external notes.
Buy it if you want optional post-campaign experimentation
Chamber Dungeons add a mode for arranging rooms, objectives, keys and bosses after you have access to the relevant chambers. Players who enjoy remixing levels or replaying familiar spaces have a reason to continue after the main ending. Amiibo-compatible extras can add more variety, although they are not necessary to complete the game.
Buy it if your original copy is inconvenient to access
A modern Switch release can be the practical option when your Game Boy hardware, cartridge or preferred way of playing the original is no longer readily available. Nintendo lists both physical and digital formats for the Switch product. Check the price and stock in your own region because those details vary by storefront and date.

Who should replay the original instead?
Choose the original for a preservation-minded replay
If your goal is to revisit the game exactly as it felt on Game Boy, the original pixel art, sound and two-button limitations are part of that experience. The Switch remake preserves the design but intentionally changes the audiovisual language and control demands.

Choose the original if you dislike familiar second playthroughs
Because the map, characters, dialogue and dungeon progression remain so close, prior knowledge can make the Switch campaign considerably faster. The remake does not provide a new route designed to surprise someone who has already finished Link’s Awakening. A different game may be a better use of your budget if novelty is your main criterion.
Choose the original if overworld stutter is a deal-breaker
Players who are especially sensitive to frame-rate fluctuations may prefer the version whose limitations they already understand. The 2019 observations from Nintendo Life and TIME are enough to make performance a legitimate buying question, even though they do not describe every current setup.
How much does prior knowledge change the remake?
Knowing the original can change the pacing in two opposite ways. On one hand, you can move directly toward familiar objectives, recognize the purpose of items quickly and solve puzzles without waiting for every clue. On the other hand, that efficiency can expose how little of the campaign has been structurally changed.
The remake’s new value is therefore cumulative rather than narrative. Each improvement—fewer equipment swaps, a pinned map, searchable conversations, refreshed music and a rebuilt visual style—makes the same sequence more pleasant to repeat. No single feature turns it into a new Zelda, but together they can make a return visit feel substantially more comfortable.
Players who last touched the Game Boy version many years ago may also experience a practical rediscovery: the route is familiar enough to prevent frustration but polished enough to make old spaces feel newly legible. Players who replay Link’s Awakening DX frequently will notice the sameness more quickly.
A practical buying checklist
- You want the original adventure with modern presentation: The Switch remake fits.
- You value fewer menu interruptions: Dedicated sword and shield controls, X/Y equipment assignment and conversation review favor Switch.
- You enjoy marking unfinished locations: The Switch map’s pins are useful.
- You want extra replay systems: Chamber Dungeons add remixable layouts; Zelda amiibo can unlock additional chambers, with the Link amiibo adding Shadow Link.
- You need a new story or substantially different route: Do not buy expecting that; the campaign remains highly familiar.
- You require perfectly consistent overworld performance: Consider the 2019 slowdown and stutter reports before purchasing.
- You prefer pixel art and original hardware sound: Replay the Game Boy or DX version if you can access it comfortably.
- You are deciding on cost: Compare the current physical and digital prices in your region; Nintendo’s available formats do not establish one universal price.
What the remake does not add
It does not add Zelda, the Triforce, Ganon or the Master Sword to this adventure. It does not replace Koholint Island’s dreamlike cast with a conventional Hyrule storyline. It does not rewrite the conversations into a new script or rearrange the principal dungeon sequence. Chamber Dungeons are optional and separate from the campaign rather than a second story mode.
Those boundaries matter because “remake” can imply a larger reinterpretation than Nintendo delivered. Here, the design is conservative in structure and ambitious in presentation. The Switch edition is best understood as a faithful modern re-creation with quality-of-life changes and a bonus dungeon-building mode.

Final decision
Buy The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for Nintendo Switch if you want the most convenient, visually transformed way to replay the original adventure and can accept that the core journey is nearly the same. Replay the Game Boy or DX edition if preserving its pixel-art identity, avoiding the remake’s documented overworld slowdown reports or spending nothing matters more than modern controls and presentation. For everyone else, the Switch version’s improvements are meaningful enough to justify returning to Koholint Island, but not enough to make it a substitute for a brand-new Zelda campaign.
