It may be worth upgrading if your current iPhone’s battery, camera or performance is holding you back; it is harder to justify if you have a recent Pro that still meets your needs. The strongest direct comparison available is Tom’s Guide’s hands-on test of iPhone 18 Pro against iPhone 16 Pro. It found meaningful gains in battery life, charging, camera controls and tested performance, but its reviewer said value-conscious 16 Pro owners could wait. Your current model, condition and verified trade-in offer matter more than any single comparison.
What is new in the iPhone 18 Pro?
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. The company says initial-market availability begins September 18, with availability in 20 additional countries and regions beginning September 25. Apple lists a U.S. launch starting price of $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Local pricing, taxes, availability and trade-in terms can differ or change. Apple highlights a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture and new Pro Controls, the A20 Pro chip, a redesigned vapor chamber, and battery and charging improvements. Its release also promotes Siri AI with iOS 27, which Apple says is rolling out in beta. These are Apple’s product claims; beta features and language availability vary by region, so do not count on Siri AI as a benefit unless it is available to you and works for your needs. Tom’s Guide’s comparison is useful evidence for owners of that specific two-generation-old Pro, but it is one publication’s test—not a guarantee of the same result in everyday use or a test of every older iPhone.

| Area | What the comparison found | What it means for your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Battery test | Tom’s Guide measured 16 hours 17 minutes for iPhone 18 Pro and 14 hours 7 minutes for iPhone 16 Pro in its test. | A reported result under that publication’s testing conditions; your endurance will depend on how you use your phone. |
| Charging | Tom’s Guide reported faster charging for iPhone 18 Pro. | The review does not establish a result for every charging setup or user. |
| Camera | The newer phone adds variable aperture and manual camera controls, including Pro Controls. | More relevant if you actively want to adjust how you shoot than if your current camera already gives you the photos you need. |
| Performance | Tom’s Guide reported benchmark gains and highlighted gaming and editing performance. | More relevant to demanding workloads; the review says both phones can run iOS 27 and that many 16 Pro owners may be satisfied with current performance. |
Read Tom’s Guide’s comparison for its test details and reviewer assessment. Its recommendation to keep the 16 Pro longer when value matters is a judgment, not a universal cutoff for upgrading.
Who is most likely to benefit?
Consider upgrading if your current iPhone is getting in the way
- Your battery no longer lasts through your usual day, and replacing or servicing it is not the solution you prefer.
- You want variable aperture, manual camera controls or zoom capability that your present phone does not provide.
- You regularly play demanding games or edit content and have noticed performance limits.
- Your current phone is old or unreliable enough that the combined improvements would solve problems you actually experience.
Wait if a recent Pro still does what you need
The cited hands-on comparison supports caution specifically for iPhone 16 Pro owners who are happy with their camera, battery and performance. It does not establish tested upgrade outcomes for every older generation. If your phone works reliably and you do not need the new camera controls or extra performance, the evidence does not show that paying to have the newest model is worthwhile.

Work out the real cost before deciding
Start with the price where you live, then subtract only a trade-in or carrier credit you have verified for your device, condition, plan and location. Apple’s September 2026 U.S. launch announcement listed Apple Trade In credits of $175–$885 for eligible iPhone 13-or-later devices. It also said select carriers may offer up to $1,200 for eligible iPhone 14-or-later trade-ins in any condition. These are announcement figures, not a promise of a current offer or your eligibility. Check Apple’s announcement, then confirm the actual quote and conditions before relying on it.

The $1,199 figure is Apple’s U.S. launch starting price for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro; other storage capacities and markets may cost more. Compare your expected out-of-pocket cost with the specific benefit you want, rather than treating the headline trade-in maximum as guaranteed savings.

A practical upgrade checklist
- Identify the problem. Is it poor battery endurance, camera limitations, slow performance, insufficient storage or a reliability issue? If you cannot name a problem the new phone would fix, waiting is the lower-risk choice.
- Check your actual model and condition. The direct comparison discussed here is against iPhone 16 Pro; it is not a measured comparison with every older iPhone.
- Price the phone locally. Confirm capacity, local price, taxes and availability rather than assuming the U.S. launch price applies to you.
- Get a firm trade-in quote. Verify your model’s eligibility, condition requirements, credit timing and any carrier-plan conditions. Do not budget around an advertised maximum until it is confirmed for your transaction.
- Decide whether the new features matter now. Camera controls and performance gains have the clearest case for people who will use them. Treat Siri AI as a beta feature whose availability can vary.
Verdict by current phone
If you have an older iPhone with failing battery life, a camera that no longer meets your needs or performance problems, the iPhone 18 Pro is a more compelling upgrade candidate. If you own an iPhone 16 Pro that remains reliable and satisfactory, Tom’s Guide’s comparison suggests the improvements may not justify the cost for a value-conscious buyer. For other models, weigh your own phone’s condition and limitations; the available comparison does not establish a universal generation-by-generation answer.
