Yes, the Gothic trilogy is worth considering today if you enjoy fantasy RPGs built around faction politics, gradual character growth, and learning how a place and its people work. The three classic games come from an older design era, so they should not be treated as one uniform experience. Gothic 1 Remake, released in 2026, is a separate, modernized reworking of the first game—not a replacement for the classics.
What kind of RPG is Gothic?
The series is most appealing when you want to feel your character become more capable while figuring out a society, its factions, and the geography around you. Its pull is less about following a generic checklist of map activities and more about discovering how local people and places operate.

That approach may suit players who like exploration with a strong setting and choices that shape character development. It may be a harder fit if you expect every installment to share the same combat feel or the smoothness of a contemporary action RPG. Those are broad expectations, though: the available official material does not establish a detailed mechanical comparison across all three classic games.

Combat should be considered by installment, not as a single trilogy-wide system. The official Gothic 1 Remake Steam listing describes a modernized system with deliberate, tactical roots, alongside improved progression. It is the clearest option for players specifically seeking a more modern presentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Return to The Colony, in a full blown remake of the popular and revolutionary game Gothic from 2001. Rediscover the world of the mining colony, its secrets and challenges
- Play as the Nameless Hero – Manage the fate of a lifetime convicted prisoner who must survive in a world of wild animals, creatures and convicts of dangerous reputation
- Faithful full remake of the original Gothic 1
- Modernized combat system that takes the basic premises of the original combat system to the modern age
The Gothic 3 manual documents both close-combat and ranged-combat systems. That establishes variety in the third game’s combat options, but it is not enough to support a precise ranking of the original trilogy’s combat or a claim that one classic game’s mechanics work exactly like another’s.
Are the quests and factions interesting?
Faction choice is a central reason to consider the remake: its official description says players choose among three factions, with that alignment affecting ability development and how the adventure unfolds. The same listing says the remake adds more detailed questlines, NPC routines and reactions, and traversal abilities. These are claims in the publisher’s store description, rather than an independent assessment of quest quality.
Rank #2
- Gothic Classic Khorinis Saga: Two legendary award-winning RPGs, finally brought together at your fingertips! Save Myrtana again in this epic saga on the Switch
- Gothic 1 Classic: One of the biggest RPGs with over 50 hours of gameplay
- Gothic 1 Classic: A large variety of weapons and spells for your character
- Gothic 2 Classic: Over 100 thrilling missions on the different settings
- Gothic 2 Classic: A detailed, lively game environment with over 500 individual characters (each with their own daily routine)
For Gothic 3, the manual describes a quest log that records essential mission details. The available official sources support meaningful faction choice in the remake and quest tracking in the third game; they do not justify a blanket claim that every quest across the trilogy is equally deep or reactive.

Is the world open?
The settings change across the series. The first two games are set on Khorinis; Gothic 3 moves to mainland Myrtana. Its manual distinguishes Myrtana’s central realm from the icy northern region of Nordmar and the southern desert of Varant.
Rank #3
- A big RPG experience with over 50 hours of gameplay
- A large variety of weapons and spells for your character
- A unique character development systems that is tied to teachers that can be found in the world
- A simulated living world where people go to work, sleep, eat and fight to survive
- Make a choice between 3 different camps that all have their unique perspectives on the main story
The remake’s official description calls its Valley of the Mines an organic open world and says NPCs and wildlife follow routines independently of the player. That points to a world designed around places, inhabitants, and local patterns—not simply a map of disconnected activities. The listing also frames exploration as unrestricted, but that description alone does not establish how every area or quest behaves in play.
Should you play the original or the remake?
Choose based on whether you want the historical version of the first game or its expanded, modernized reworking. The remake is a distinct release, while the classics remain separately available on Steam.

What should PC players check before choosing?
Gothic 1 Remake requirements
The official Steam listing specifies Windows 10/11 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, a graphics card with 8 GB VRAM, and 60 GB of storage at minimum; an SSD is required. These are the listing’s stated requirements, which can change, so check the live page before purchase.
Best Value
- Huge free-roaming world - virtually no boundaries
- Advanced human behavior AI for hundreds of individual characters with full audio dialogues
- Unique class-free character development
- Over 50 different monsters and animals and dozens of different human enemies
- Over 50 different spells and over 100 different weapons for close and ranged combat
Gothic 1 Classic compatibility
Although the classic game’s Steam page lists operating systems as old as Windows XP through Windows 11, the Steam client itself requires Windows 10 or later. A legacy game’s listed minimum does not guarantee friction-free operation on every current PC; compatibility can depend on system configuration.
Finding the classic games digitally
Steam’s Gothic Official collection is described as including Gothic 1 Classic, Gothic II: Gold Edition, Gothic 3, and related franchise products. This confirms an official digital collection, not current retailer stock, physical formats, or a complete boxed trilogy.
Quick Recap
Who is the trilogy for?
- Consider it if you enjoy faction-driven character development, gradual progression, and fantasy settings that reward attention to their inhabitants and regions.
- Start with the remake if modernized combat and a more expanded presentation of the first game’s experience are your priority.
- Choose the classics if you specifically want the original design history; allow for the possibility that older software may need extra compatibility patience.
- Set expectations by game rather than assuming the trilogy has a single combat system, quest structure, or world.
