How to Safely Dispose of Used Needles and Syringes at Home

Put each used needle or other sharp straight into a sharps disposal container immediately after use. When the container reaches about three-quarters full, close it as designed and check your local waste-service or health-department instructions before taking it anywhere or putting it in household trash. U.S. disposal rules and collection options vary by community.

What to do immediately after using a needle

  1. Keep a sharps container within reach before you begin. Place it near the injection area, but somewhere children and pets cannot access it.
  2. Put the entire used sharp into the container immediately. Do not leave it loose on a counter or set it aside while you decide what to do. Avoid handling or manipulating the needle.
  3. Close the container according to its instructions. Do not push down or force extra sharps into it.

The FDA’s consumer guidance says, “Used sharps should be immediately placed in a sharps disposal container.” This helps prevent sticks, cuts, and punctures from loose sharps. FDA: DOs and DON’Ts of Proper Sharps Disposal

Choose a container that can safely contain sharps

First choice: an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container

Use an FDA-cleared container if one is available. These are generally rigid plastic and have a fill line. Follow the manufacturer’s closure and fill instructions. FDA says they are generally available from pharmacies, medical-supply companies, health-care providers, and online; a portable travel-size container may suit sharps used away from home. Fallback only if a cleared container is unavailable

The FDA says some organizations and community guidelines recommend a heavy-duty plastic household container as an alternative. A plastic laundry-detergent container is one example, but a household bottle is not automatically safe. The container needs all of these characteristics:

What to do when the container is nearly full

When the container is about three-quarters (3/4) full, follow your community’s instructions for disposal. Do not overfill or reuse it. Keep it closed and out of reach of children and pets while you arrange disposal. The FDA’s threshold is a cue to start the local disposal process, not permission to put every closed container in household trash. FDA: Sharps Disposal Containers

Find an accepted disposal route in your area

Before transporting or discarding a full container, ask your local trash service or health department what it accepts and how it must be prepared. A pharmacist, hospital, health-care provider, or veterinarian may know of nearby programs, but confirm directly with the program before going: a listed type of facility does not mean every location accepts household sharps.

What not to do with used sharps

  • Never put loose needles or other sharps in household or public trash, recycling, or a toilet.
  • Do not remove, bend, break, or recap a needle used by someone else.
  • Do not remove a needle from a syringe unless you use a needle clipper.
  • Do not overfill, reuse, or leave an open sharps container where children or pets can reach it.

These precautions reduce the chance of injury to household members and waste handlers. FDA: DOs and DON’Ts of Proper Sharps Disposal

If someone is accidentally stuck

Wash the exposed area promptly with soap and water, or use a skin antiseptic such as rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. Then seek immediate medical attention by contacting a physician or local hospital. The FDA gives the same advice if blood or other bodily fluids contact the eyes, nose, mouth, or skin.
