The Bambu Lab R1 is not a 3D printer. Bambu Lab introduced it on September 22, 2026, as a 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver; the P1S is an enclosed FDM 3D printer. Choose the P1S to make three-dimensional plastic parts from filament, or consider the R1 to cut or engrave suitable materials. They are different kinds of machines, not direct competitors.
What the R1 and P1S actually do
Bambu Lab R1: laser cutting and engraving
Bambu Lab describes the R1 as a 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver, and calls it the company’s first product line beyond 3D printing. Its September 22, 2026 launch announcement lists cutting and engraving wood, transparent acrylic, and leather, with speeds up to 1,000 mm/s. It also names glass, stone, and coated metals as engraving applications. These are laser processes, not filament extrusion. Bambu Lab’s R1 launch announcement is the source for those launch specifications and material claims.

Bambu Lab P1S: enclosed filament 3D printing
The P1S makes objects by extruding filament in successive layers. Bambu Lab lists a 256 × 256 × 256 mm³ build volume, a maximum toolhead speed of 500 mm/s, and an all-metal hot end rated to a maximum of 300 °C. The printer includes an enclosure and activated-carbon filter, plus a chamber camera, and is compatible with Bambu Lab’s AMS systems. Materials and workpiece fit
Filament for the P1S
Bambu Lab lists PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET, ABS, and ASA as ideal materials for the P1S; PA and PC as capable; and carbon- or glass-fiber-reinforced polymer as not recommended on its official listing. Check Bambu Lab’s current material and upgrade guidance for the exact filament you plan to use. The printer’s build volume sets the maximum listed part envelope, although the shape and orientation of a particular part can affect whether it fits.

Sheet and surface materials for the R1
The R1 announcement names wood, transparent acrylic, and leather for cutting and engraving, and glass, stone, and coated metals for engraving. Those are manufacturer-listed applications, not a blanket statement that every grade, thickness, coating, or workpiece is suitable. Confirm material compatibility and operating requirements in current product documentation before committing a project to the laser.
Workspace, operation, and safety checks
These machines have different physical and operational requirements. Before buying either one, check the full machine footprint and any accessories you need, along with the space and operating conditions specified in its current manual. For the R1, verify ventilation, fire precautions, and the applicable laser-safety setup; the launch announcement describes the standard machine as intended for home use, but that alone does not establish every installation’s safety requirements. For either product, confirm local requirements and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

The R1 launch announcement says the short-focus lens is included. It lists the Riser Base, Conveyor, Rotary attachment, medium- and long-focus lenses, Vision Encoder, E1 Pro air purifier, and Auto Fire Extinguishing system as sold separately. Account for any accessories required for your intended work when estimating the R1 setup cost. How to compare them without mixing unlike specifications
- Start with the process: decide whether you need filament-based 3D printing or laser cutting and engraving.
- Match the material and workpiece: check P1S filament compatibility and part dimensions, or R1 material suitability and laser work area.
- Check the full setup: consider footprint, accessories, ventilation, fire precautions, and applicable safety requirements using current manuals.
- Compare total local cost: include tax, shipping, bundle contents, accessories, and current availability rather than comparing a live store promotion with a launch price.
- Confirm the workflow: verify current Bambu software and file-preparation support for the process and projects you intend to run.
There is no meaningful shared print-speed score for these two products: the R1’s laser speed and the P1S’s toolhead speed describe different operations and do not establish typical project throughput or finished quality. The cited specifications are manufacturer claims; no independent head-to-head reliability, operating-cost, or real-world throughput comparison is established here.
