PS5 Pro can deliver sharper, more stable images, improved ray-traced effects, or higher visual quality at a similar frame-rate target—but only in games enhanced for the console. The difference depends on each game’s Pro mode and, for some features, on whether your display supports the required output.
What changes visually on PS5 Pro?
Sony designed PS5 Pro to give game developers more rendering headroom. Compared with the current PS5, Sony says its GPU has 67% more compute units and its memory is 28% faster, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s hardware and performance claims, not a guarantee that every game runs or looks 45% better.

In a supported game, developers can spend that extra capacity on clearer image reconstruction, more detailed lighting and reflections, higher resolution, or a combination of visual quality and performance. Which improvements appear—and how noticeable they are—varies by title.

Sharper, steadier image reconstruction
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology. It reconstructs an output image from the game’s rendered image; an output described as 4K is not necessarily rendered natively at 4K.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
On March 16, 2026, Sony said an upgraded PSSR began rolling out with support across selected titles. Sony describes improvements to fine-detail clarity, image stability, and consistency. Remedy’s graphics technical director said the upgrade improves upscaling quality and stability; Square Enix’s director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth pointed to more naturally restored fine detail, including character hair, and less flicker and afterimage. Those are developer comments about particular supported games, not a promise of identical results in every title.
More detailed lighting and reflections
Sony says PS5 Pro has more powerful ray tracing for more dynamic reflections and refraction. A developer might use that capacity for reflections, ambient occlusion, or other lighting effects. The improvement is game-specific: the hardware does not automatically add ray tracing to every PS5 game.
How PS5 Pro modes can balance resolution and frame rate
The practical difference often comes from a game’s graphics modes. A Pro-enhanced mode may aim for a higher-quality image while keeping a performance-oriented frame-rate target. A target is not the same as a guarantee that the game will hold that rate in every scene.

| The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered | Naughty Dog described a Pro-specific rendering mode at 1440p, upscaled to 4K with PSSR, with a 60 fps target. | 1440p is the stated rendering resolution; 4K is the upscaled output. The 60 fps figure is a target, not a measured guarantee. |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | Insomniac described a default Performance Pro mode combining the crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features of Fidelity mode with the 60 fps target of Performance mode. | This is Insomniac’s description of specific modes in these games, not a system-wide specification. |
| Dragon Age: The Veilguard | BioWare said its 60 fps Performance mode enables ray-traced ambient occlusion (RTAO), which was available only in the base PS5’s 30 fps Fidelity mode. | The example shows a lighting feature moving into a faster-target mode; it does not establish that every Pro game combines those settings. |
| Star Wars Jedi: Survivor | Respawn described Quality mode at 2160p and said Performance mode continues to target 60 fps with higher resolutions and ray-traced reflections and ambient occlusion. | These are the developer’s mode descriptions, not independent measurements of resolution or frame rate. |
The examples come from Sony’s September 2024 developer roundup and report what developers said about their own games. Check the current game listing and patch notes for the available modes; details can change with updates.
Will your games look better?
Only selected PS5 games have Pro-specific enhancements, and Sony says the features vary by game. The console does not automatically improve every PS5 title in the same way. Sony reported more than 50 enhanced games at the November 2024 launch; that is a launch-era count, not a current total.

For a game you play often, look for its current PS5 Pro enhancement details. Check whether the update changes image reconstruction, resolution, ray tracing, frame-rate modes, or more than one of these. A game with no Pro-specific enhancement may not show the changes described in examples above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does your display affect the difference?
It can. Sony notes that certain features require a compatible display, but there is no single display requirement that applies to every Pro enhancement. Whether a particular resolution, refresh rate, VRR feature, or other output is available depends on the game mode and display. Check the game’s requirements and your screen’s supported specifications before buying new equipment; the console alone does not establish that a display can show every mode or feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs PS5 Pro worth it for graphics?
It is most relevant if the games you care about have Pro modes that improve image quality or combine visual effects with a higher frame-rate target, and if your display can show the difference. If your favorite games lack Pro enhancements, or their specific changes do not matter to you, the graphics case is less compelling. Sony’s stated hardware figures describe potential rendering headroom, not the visual outcome for a particular game.
For physical-media owners, note that Sony announced PS5 Pro without an included Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive; it can be purchased separately. That affects how you use physical discs, not graphics quality. Sony’s September 2024 announcement listed a $699.99 USD price, which is historical launch pricing rather than a current price; check current local pricing before deciding.
