Professional Counter-Strike data shows the AWP’s share of recorded kills fell through early 2024 and then partly recovered by mid-2026. That does not prove teams are buying it less often or changing their defensive setups. Kill share measures weapon output, not purchases, player roles, or where defenders stand.
What the AWP numbers show—and what they do not
EsportsOdds’ analysis of professional S- and A-tier matches reports that the AWP accounted for 13.3% of recorded kills at the start of 2021, then reached a series low of 9.19% in Q1 2024. Its reported share rose to 10.89% in Q2 2026. The pattern is a decline followed by a partial recovery, not a steady drop. See the weapon-usage series.

These figures describe the share of kills attributed to the AWP. They do not tell you how often teams bought the weapon, how many rounds included one, how long a player held it, or how many teams fielded a dedicated sniper. The underlying series uses per-match aggregates rather than parsed demos, so it cannot establish where CTs positioned themselves or how a team defended a particular map.

Did the March 2026 reload update reduce AWP use?
Not in the kill-output comparison cited here. EsportsOdds describes AWP kill share around 10–11% and flat to slightly higher after the March 2026 reload update. The report measures kills, not pick rate, so it cannot establish whether purchase frequency changed. Read the update comparison.

Valve’s update archive documents game changes that provide context, including a July 15, 2025 Competitive-mode change awarding CTs $50 for each Terrorist eliminated, as well as AWP animation work in 2025. Those notes establish the changes themselves; they do not show that either change caused teams to buy the AWP more or less often, or to alter a defensive setup. Could a lower AWP share change CT defenses?
It could change the incentives for a team, but that is a tactical hypothesis—not a finding established by the kill-share data. If a team fields the AWP less often, it might lean more on rifle crossfires, utility to deny sightlines, flexible rotations, or a player who switches between sniper and rifle duties. A team could also keep its AWP but move the player more often or use the weapon differently across maps. None of these possibilities can be confirmed from the published kill-share figures alone.

Role labels are not a substitute for round-level evidence. HLTV describes its sniping attribute as based on AWP and SSG 08 kills and multi-kills, with results indicating rifler, hybrid, or full-time sniper tendencies. That can help characterize a player’s role, but it does not show the player’s CT position, the team’s setup, or whether an AWP was purchased in a given round. HLTV’s sniping-role description.
What match demos would need to show
To establish that defensive setups are changing, compare team and map demos over time rather than inferring tactics from kill share. Useful evidence would include:

- Purchases and economy: How often CTs buy an AWP, and whether those purchases change with team money, loss bonuses, or the opponent’s economy.
- Starting positions and opening duels: Where the AWP player and rifle players begin, which sightlines they contest, and who takes early engagements.
- Utility: Whether defenders use smokes, flashes, or other utility to deny sniper angles or retake sightlines.
- Rotations and survival: When the AWP player rotates, whether the player survives or saves the weapon, and how the rest of the defense adjusts.
- Constrained buys: Whether hybrid players use rifles when the team cannot afford an AWP.
Without that map-by-map evidence, it is not possible to say that the AWP’s changing kill share has reshaped CT setups. The available numbers establish a change in one measure of professional weapon output; they do not establish the tactical cause or its defensive consequences.
