Independent reviews describe its CPU gains over M4 Max as incremental, and graphics results depend on the benchmark and competing hardware. Whether it feels dated depends on what you do, which configuration you buy, and what you already own.
What the 2026 M5 Max MacBook Pro offers
Apple introduced the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max on March 3, 2026. The 16-inch M5 Max is configurable rather than a single fixed specification: it has an 18-core CPU and a choice of 32-core or 40-core GPU. Apple lists memory bandwidth of 460GB/s for the 32-core GPU and 614GB/s for the 40-core GPU. The 40-core version can be configured with 36GB, 48GB, 64GB or 128GB of unified memory; storage starts at 2TB and can be configured up to 8TB. Apple’s UK technical specifications list the options, which may differ by region.

The 16.2-inch display has a native resolution of 3456 × 2234 at 254 pixels per inch and adaptive ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple specifies sustained full-screen XDR brightness of 1,000 nits and peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits. The M5 Max also includes hardware-accelerated ray tracing, a 16-core Neural Engine, GPU Neural Accelerators, and media engines for H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW, plus AV1 decoding. Apple’s listed connections include Thunderbolt 5/USB-C, HDMI, SDXC, a 3.5mm audio jack and MagSafe 3; check the specifications for the exact regional configuration.

Configuration matters when interpreting review results. Macworld tested a 16-inch model with an 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 128GB of unified memory, a 4TB SSD and nano-texture glass. That is a high-end review sample, not the entry configuration.

How much faster is M5 Max than M4 Max?
Apple says M5 Pro and M5 Max deliver up to 30 percent faster CPU performance and up to 50 percent higher graphics performance than the previous-generation systems specified in its announcement. Those are Apple-reported maximums tied to its test comparisons and preproduction configurations, not a guarantee that every app or task will improve by those amounts. Apple also claims up to 4× faster LLM prompt processing than M4 Pro and M4 Max, and up to 8× faster AI image generation than M1 Pro and M1 Max. These, too, are manufacturer claims tied to particular comparisons.
Independent results make the generational picture less sweeping. Macworld characterizes the M5 Max update over M4 Max as incremental, while calling it Apple’s fastest laptop. In Macworld’s Geekbench comparison, its M5 Max sample scored 7 percent higher than M3 Ultra in multi-core performance and 34 percent higher in single-core performance. Those figures describe that benchmark comparison, not performance in every professional application.

Notebookcheck’s review, updated October 5, 2026, shows why a single “fastest” label can mislead. Its tested 16-inch M5 Max with a 40-core GPU scored 17,649 in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light, below the Asus ProArt P16 with an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU at 21,012. In Geekbench 6.7 Metal, the M5 Max scored 224,987, above the M4 Max result listed at 179,746. Each score belongs to the tested system and named benchmark; neither settles which machine is faster for every workload.

For video editing, 3D work, local AI tasks or software development, compare results in the applications and workflows you actually use. Also check the tested GPU, memory capacity, sustained workload and benchmark version. A 32-core M5 Max result should not be treated as interchangeable with a 40-core model, and a benchmark score is not a substitute for testing a particular project.

Does the design make it feel old?
The “showing its age” case is more about the familiar chassis and restrained generational change than an inability to handle demanding work. Macworld’s assessment of incremental CPU gains over M4 Max gives recent owners a practical reason to question an upgrade: a new chip name alone does not mean a large improvement in their daily workflow.
There is no established successor redesign to use as a certainty in an upgrade decision. WIRED has discussed reports of a possible future touchscreen, tandem OLED display and thinner chassis conditionally; treat those as reports, not confirmed features or a promised release.

Is it worth upgrading?
| Your current computer | How to think about the upgrade |
|---|---|
| M4 Max MacBook Pro | Macworld describes the CPU update as incremental. Upgrade only if a measured gain in your specific workload, a configuration need, or another concrete requirement justifies it. |
| M1 Max, M2 Max or M3 Max MacBook Pro | Some benchmark comparisons show substantial gains over older Apple generations, but the available results do not establish a universal improvement for every app. Compare the exact workload and configuration before deciding. |
| Older or non-Max Mac | The M5 Max may be a substantial capability step for demanding work, but select the GPU, memory and storage configuration your projects require rather than assuming all M5 Max models perform alike. |
| Windows laptop with a discrete GPU | Compare the applications and benchmarks that matter to you. Notebookcheck’s tested RTX 5090 Laptop GPU system beat the M5 Max in Steel Nomad Light, while the M5 Max led the M4 Max result in Geekbench 6.7 Metal. |
Before buying or upgrading, list the tasks that currently take too long, then compare like with like: named application or benchmark, GPU configuration, memory and SSD capacity, sustained performance, battery test method, display requirements, and ports or external devices. A workload that uses the GPU heavily may lead to a different choice than one dominated by CPU performance or media-engine support.

Apple rates the 16-inch model for up to 22 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web access. Macworld’s continuous saved-video loop lasted 1,475 minutes, or more than 24 hours, but the review explicitly says the test was not designed to be stressful. These results use different methods and are not directly comparable; neither predicts runtime under a demanding professional workload.

Prices and offers can change, and listings may describe different builds. Macworld’s page showed an Amazon offer of $3,899 and an Apple listed price of $4,399 during its review coverage. Treat those as observed listings, not guaranteed current prices, and verify the exact memory, storage and GPU configuration before comparing offers.
Quick Recap
What to take away from the benchmark debate
- The M5 Max remains a high-performance laptop, but “fastest” depends on the task and the comparison being made.
- Apple’s “up to” performance figures are manufacturer claims tied to stated test conditions and comparators.
- Independent results vary: M5 Max leads some Apple-generation comparisons and trails a discrete-GPU Windows laptop in a named graphics test.
- For M4 Max owners, the reported incremental CPU improvement makes workload-specific evidence more useful than the generation label.
