These habits work with a phone, point-and-shoot, or DSLR; the National Park Service’s beginner guide is written for all three.
1. Look for better light before you shoot
Notice where the light is coming from and whether it is soft or harsh. Light changes how a subject looks: it can reveal texture and shape, or create strong shadows and bright areas that lose detail. The National Park Service’s beginner guide describes soft, even light near sunset and cautions that bright light can lead to overexposure. USCA also recommends using natural light.

Before changing camera settings, try moving yourself or your subject. Turn the subject toward a window, step into open shade, or wait for a softer moment in the day. Check how the light falls on the subject and background, then take a frame and compare it with one made from your original position.

2. Simplify the frame so the subject stands out
Decide what the photo is about, then make that subject easy to find. If it looks small or gets lost among surrounding details, move closer or reframe. Adobe’s composition lesson focuses on filling the frame; as its quoted photojournalist Robert Capa put it, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.”

Look around the edges before pressing the shutter. A bright object, cluttered background, or distracting shape can pull attention away from the subject. Shift your position or adjust the framing to remove it, while leaving enough context to make the image understandable.
3. Change your viewpoint
Take a moment to try a different height or direction. A lower position, a higher one, or a step to either side can change the background, the way light reaches the subject, and the shadows visible in the frame. Nikon notes that changing level can reveal lighting and shadows that were less apparent from the original position.

For a quick comparison, make one image from where you first stood, then change your position and make another. Keep the subject the same so you can see what the viewpoint—not a different subject—changed.

4. Check focus and exposure on the intended subject
Before taking the picture, confirm that the important subject is in focus and that its brightness looks usable in the preview. The controls vary by device: a phone may let you tap the subject to set focus, while a dedicated camera may let you choose a focus point and review an exposure preview. The EPA’s archived beginner article identifies focus and exposure, along with angle, as core elements of a photograph.

If the camera focuses on the background instead, select or tap the intended subject again when your device supports it. If the preview looks too bright or dark, adjust your position relative to the available light or use the exposure control your camera provides. Check the result rather than assuming the camera chose correctly.
5. Practice with one repeatable challenge
Choose one ordinary subject and photograph it from several positions, or return to it as the light changes. Then compare the frames. Ask which image makes the subject most prominent, has fewer distracting background details, uses light more effectively, and keeps the intended subject in focus with a suitable exposure.

This is a way to train your eye, not a formal scoring system. The National Park Service advises beginners to keep shooting, and Nikon likewise emphasizes practice. Repeating the same small exercise makes it easier to notice what changed and which choices better communicate the subject.
How to take better photos without buying new gear
Use the camera you already have and make deliberate changes before reaching for a setting or purchase. Start with available light, simplify the frame, shift your viewpoint, check focus and exposure, then compare a few versions of the same subject. The National Park Service guide is intended for DSLR, point-and-shoot, and phone users, so the fundamentals are not limited to one kind of camera.
